Visiting St. John USVI is taking a journey to another planet or another place on our planet that is both dissimilar and familiar. St. John has that X factor that illuminates the island through the lenses of Karla's friends and neighbors. For her neighborhood (and most destinations), collaboration is not only key, it's the only way be. In these communities, such as ones beset upon by natural disasters, every dollar or euro has a major impact.

We couldn't agree more. St. John is just as you described it, we felt like we were in another planet. The positive attitude and spirit of everyone in the island is contagious. Without a doubt and in places in which the economy depends almost 100% on tourism the impact is even bigger.

@@VacationRentalShow Those baller dance moves, obviously! And I loved seeing how everyone is coming together, and how happy and positive and free-spirited they all are despite the circumstances. Also, I was really glad to hear that the reefs are showing signs of new growth. I love snorkeling and I've been so worried that climate change is going to wipe out the reefs... so that's good news! And that shot of the sea turtle was amazing!!! Just wow.

Oh also - you mentioned how doing something to help the community in the area you're traveling to can add another layer of dimension... I totally agree! Matt and I just went to Southeast Asia for our honeymoon, and while we were in Cambodia we did a tour where we traveled to one of the poorer towns and installed a water filter that gives people in the community clean drinking water for 5 years. I can honestly say it was one of the most memorable parts about the trip!

Capt Phil is still getting it done! My wife and I snorkeled with him on our honeymoon, July 2003. I think it's time for a return visit with the three kids. Not a grain of sand on the deck of his boat, and he works hard to keep it that way!
