This episode of The Vacation Rental Show with Matt Landau explores Lindsborg through the eyes of local vacation rental professional Jim Prugh of Lindsborg Vacation Rentals.
In this episode, Matt ventures to Lindsborg Kansas. Lindsborg, also known as Little Sweden, is bucking a trend of rural decay as a thriving cultural, residential and touristic center for the area which lead us to explore the question of how the people of Lindsborg put themselves on the map?

With the many hats I wear while managing Jim's vacation rentals, it's easy for me to get wrapped up in and almost tunnel-visioned by the business details. Those details are very important, but also important is the big picture of what Lindsborg has to offer, its many ambassadors and its heart and soul. Thank you Matt and your team for capturing that big picture so well. Thank you for an inspirational showcasing of Lindsborg and many of the opportunities and people who make it so special.

Matt's question was so apropos: "How does a town in the middle of nowhere effectively put itself on the map?" But Lindsborg provide the answer in the best ways possible. This episode spotlights who we are, where we are and why we love to be here. Throw away any preconceived notions about "small town America" because when you visit Lindsborg, those notions will be obliterated. Small towns - not in the middle of nowhere, but just a short drive from anywhere!

Matt, you've nailed a prime maxim of travel: much is to be gained by looking beyond the anointed destinations of the world. Lindsborg is but one example (but a good one.) Travel is about life and that can be found in many places. Thanks so much for showing that in one small town on the Great Plains, as well as in Bali, Rio and Lisbon.

It was so interesting to see a show about a small town. The activities are so different than in big cities. Jim, how many percent of your guests come from Sweden? Are there many Swedish tourists in Lindsborg? Virag

Totally, Virag! I love how small town dynamic plays off against big cities (like Rio) and even remote destinations for me (like Bali). I noticed some intriguing similarities between these places -- almost always the common denominator was a creative and pioneering host. Next stop, Budapest!

Yes! For us was also interesting to see that in some cases within big cities what we look for is that small town connection.

While Swedes visit Lindsborg, I can't think of any Swedish guest who has stayed with us. That said, Lindsborg is quite renowned in Sweden.

When I was in high school and part of the Swedish Dancers we hosted a group of Swedish students for a week or so. I’ve met several other Swedish tourists over the years and have heard repeatedly that Lindsborg is more Swedish than Sweden! 😂

great review. ee briefly visited 2 and 1/2 years ago when my daughter started college at bethany.was a lovely town and look fotward to spending a few days there when she graduates.would visit more often if we could but not so easy when you stay in scotland

Haha, it's like "Veetehuset", only one t. Vete meaning wheat and huset meaning the house. Damn that guy is big. 7:35 You literally just showed footage of you searching for Lindsborg and the Swedish one popped up. So crazy to see this as a Swede. 13:35 Oh no. They separated the words! In Swedish words that are a set are written without spaces, one word is one word. And ölstuga makes sense as beer cottage. But if the words have a space in between it's really weird. Then it's just like you have two random words next to each other. Beer... cottage.

Some can, yes! Mostly its a celebration of the culture, but I think you could find enough Swedish speakers to find your way around.

Some locals spoke Swedish and many of them knew words and phrases. One of them is likely to chime in here to respond to your lovely message.

Right at the beginning I was thinking for myself, maybe I should go there and start a Swedish class. Maybe it already exists, I dunno. Or maybe a restaurant with Pitepalt, Kroppkakor och Stekt Strömming. Late summer Kräftskiva och Surströmmingspremiären.

Little late, but in grade school our 4th grade teacher was from Sweden and we learned Swedish. It was helpful when I went to Sweden with the Dancers in high school!

As a Swede I had never heard about Lindsborg until today. It was shown on Swedish massmedia as a very conservative town where people love Donald Trump and God, while hating abortion. I have no clue if it's true or not, but it got me compelled to just search youtube for this lovely town. Lovely as what I saw it in this clip.

Usually its peaceful and not much goes on, this is mostly whats its like in my opinion, but usually there isnt many people even walking on main street so

You should visit Sweden and see how things would be worse than in Lindsborg. Of course, 10 million peeps will be much worse than 3 thousands. In the previous reply I said we are number 1 in Europe when it comes to grenade and bomb attacks against innocent civilians, but then it turned out we are tied with Mexico in the entire world. Things are scary in Sweden.

I've lived in a small town in Carlton Kansas. I loved your show, but you shouldn't rob Hutchinson, Kansas.. The local Space museum, is in Hutchinson. The Cosmosphere is amazing, but it's not part of the borg..

Hello Seth! We mention the Cosmosphere as being in the nearby town of Hutchinson in the episode, perhaps it goes by quickly. As awesome as Lindsborg was, getting out to Hutchinson and also hiking in a state park showed us it could be a base of operations for exploring Kansas which we would like to do more of!

Thanks, Seth. Yes, the Cosmosphere isn't part of the Borg. Our audience is for visitors outside of Kansas, so we cast a wide net to have a long list of experiences. We believe that the Cosmosphere shouldn't be missed by anyone traveling from afar. We will encourage travel to Abilene, Salina, Lucas, even Wichita and Newton.

Hi Seth, we're big on sending folks to the Cosmosphere, too, here at Small World Gallery in Lindsborg. To have that world class museum just down the road is amazing.
