Just found you thanks to RU-vid algorithm! I´m a fellow crafter, educator, and West Coaster. I live in Northern CA and teach high school AP and EL English. First 2 minutes of your podcast. and I knew I would subscribe - we have so much in common. I used to be a trailrunner, but now at my age, I walk to save my knees. This summer I trained myself to knit while I walk (and listen to an audio book - a trifecta!), and my average miles per week tripled. I walk a quarter-mile loop in my neighborhood where it is safe, the terrain is dirt but flat, and the view is gorgeous. I pick a small easy knit and wear a belt with a pouch to store my skein. Spring Break I taught my 10-year-old granddaughter to knit using an advent and the Coorie in a Poncho pattern. I taught her crochet last year, so knitting came very easy to her. Loved your video and will probably go back and watch some of your prior episodes ;-)

awww this is such a sweet comment! Welcome, hi new knitter friend, and hugs fellow teacher friend. I love love love that you taught your daughter to knit with an advent and that poncho pattern. that's incredible!

I’m listening to The Vampire Knitting Club while I knit too! I also love them…definitely not deep literature, but fun. 😊 I love to sit outside on my screen porch and knit, or sit in a coffee shop with friends…and I never watch TV without knitting…all favorites!

I love my Summer Secret Crop. I use mine as a layer. Under dresses when it is cool but to warm for a sweater, under a button up shirt, under a cardigan. I also made the smallest size for my daughter and she loves it (you could even go down a needle size to get fit for your girl).

My self-care is similar to yours: time outside, usually with my dogs, knitting, and reading. If I can sit outside with my dogs, read, and knit at the same time I'm at my happiest. I have a list of about 100 self-care activities that I've divided into categories like spiritual; educational (I struggle with brain fog and sometimes learning something new or challenging myself intellectually is a good form of self-care for me!); hygiene/body stuff like trying a new hair style, getting my nails done, yoga, going for a walk, having a dance break, etc.; social; creative. I have categories with several ideas to keep self-care fresh and relevant to what I'm needing in that moment. I keep this list in the front of my journal, which I use daily. Also- I was working on my kindle cover while watching!

I walk and listen to audio books pretty often. If I wasn't walking with our dog I might knit as well. When I was in high school I always walked to school and would read an actual book at the same time. Not sure how I didn't stack it more often!! I'm so exited to see your heirloom cardigan take shape. xx

Enjoyed the exploration of self care. For me it’s outside, even just a walk around the garden, coffee with friends, knitting/crochet, audiobooks. It doesn’t have to be a long time. When my children were young, I’d mark school work while watching them at the skatepark. More time with them when we were home and I was outside so not such a chore. It’s individual and whatever works for you is fine.

I would layer that tank over a decorative strappy sports bra, or maybe a coordinating-colored bralette. I have to wear a strapless bra with my bralettes for support though, so it gets a bit warm in the summer!
@professorpurl

That's a fun idea! I need to do some searching.

As far as kids' garments go (not necessarily specific to tank tops because I haven't looked extensively into them) but some adult garments that have negative ease, might have the first size work for a child. I've knit a cardigan for my daughter that's an adult pattern but meant to have negative ease so the first size actually worked great! I think a lot of tank tops are designed with negative ease so many you'll find something that works in the style you're looking for - or if anything to give you numbers to go off of. Cheering you on for drafting your own for your daughter!!! I'm 100% with you - being outdoors enjoying the fresh air, listening to the birds, hiking a nature trail, knitting by a body of water be it a river/stream/lake/ocean. I save reading for right before bed (though if I'm too tired, it gets skipped and that's okay) - side not, I prefer "book books" because for me it's the smell of the pages, the sound of turning the pages, being able to flip back if I think I missed a clue, etc. Sometimes self-care looks like writing down a to-do list and checking things off. Sometimes self-care looks like finally making that doctor's appt that I've put off. Take care!~Stephanie
@professorpurl

That's a terrific idea to consider adult garments with negative ease. It makes me think about you could also probably take dk type patterns and use fingering for a smaller gauge, too! I just cast on Mathilda's tank this weekend (by request) so thanks for cheering for me! Oh how your "finally making that doctor's appt" self-care comment, resonates with me. I have some of that on my mental to-do that I need to make a reality. Thanks!! (side note: I love the physical books, too! very special experience to read that way)
@EdibleThoughtsMakes
@EdibleThoughtsMakes 4 месяца назад
@@professorpurl Absolutely! Playing around with gauge and adjusting as you go is totally doable. Excited to see Mathilda's tank progress when you share! I forgot to add that for me, wearing my handknits are a form of self-care and something I do every day. It's something I take pride and comfort and joy in and for it to be functional art is pretty special! We are pretty awesome creatives❣

Hey Nicole! I relate to your bra v tanktop situation so much! I think a longline sports bra is the way to go. They're cute, come in a zillion styles and colors and offer support, coverage and interest to a knit-fit. I've found them at Target and Old Navy for sure!

Thanks for the visit, Nicole, and good luck with the end of term!!! That tank would look adorable under an open white linen shirt, imo. I tend to wear a racerback bra under my tanks that have that shape, but I don't know if that's something you'd like. :)

Forgive what is going to be a very long comment but I was taking notes of everything I wanted to mention so here goes!: -your e-reader cozy is so cute! Now that I have one I will need to make one too! -the color of your summer secret crop is spectacular! It definitely looked like it was glowing through the screen! -I am obsessed with that green quilt square with the pink speckles inside - so gorgeous -I am so honored to have my shell stitch marker on such a special project! -Can't wait for you to design a kids tank top pattern! -You know who to ask if you need testers! -I SNORTED TEA OUT OF MY NOSE WHEN YOU SAID "I wasn't going to buy a yarn advent this year" 🤣🤣🤣🤣 -I love that you cried when your doctoral student defended her dissertation - your students are so lucky to have you! ❤

Loved the personnel part of your podcast as well. I convinced Lorri to make the AYC Advent Wonka themed and I cannot wait. I really would like to do 1 or 2 swap with friends, but not sure who would want to do it. Last year I got a fiber advent I really enjoyed but haven't seen any that has moved me yet.
