On Tuesday Elizabeth (Lizzy Biggs Photography) had the fabulous opportunity to speak with Kate Smallwood Ceramics in the run-up to @chesterartbeat this first weekend in July
Kate is a local creator and business specialising in hand-thrown, naturally glazed stoneware with a rustic style.
We got the opportunity to delve into what a day in the life of a small pottery studio looks like and discussed the exhilaration (or fear) of opening the kiln.
Kate explains some of her processes including the chemistry of creating glazes and how they react with the clay.
Apparently, ceramics are both more scientific, precise and timely than one might imagine.
Environmental factors are always a hot topic, so Kate opens the door for us to see how pots that don't work become reprocessed as raw clay through soaking and drying on paddles.
We also hear from Kate about her historic find and how this rugged little inkwell from her dog walk has impacted her overall style.
Finally Kate shares around collaborating with florists, displays and usage of pots, commercial markets and her shop.
Kate is a teacher so will be joining Chester Art Beat for only Saturday 6th and Sunday 7th of July.
