There are a number of Christian traditions (Mennonites, Quakers, Adventists, Moravians, etc.) who hold to a position of non-violence/Christian pacifism and say that owning a gun for self-defense isn’t a Biblically supported position. They’ll quote verses like Matthew 26:52, where Jesus says “put your sword back into its place. For all who take the sword will perish by the sword.” Or Matthew 5:39 where Jesus say, “Do not resist the one who is evil. But if anyone slaps you on the right cheek, turn to him the other also.”
But there are other Christians who would say that the Bible permits instances of self-defense, as long as it’s done with wisdom, tact, understanding, and to protect the innocent from evil. In Luke 22:36, Jesus tells His remaining disciples, “If you don’t have a sword, sell your cloak and buy one.” Some say that in this verse Jesus upheld the right of his disciples in certain instances to defend themselves. Exodus 22:2 says, “If a thief is caught breaking in at night and is struck a fatal blow, the defender is not guilty of bloodshed”.
So- which one is it? Are Christians to always put away their swords and turn the other cheek? Or are they permitted to own a sword and use it to defend themselves? Can a Christian own a gun? Is gun ownership a “God-given right”?

Hi Josh, It's been awhile. Stayed up past 4 a.m. because I couldn't stop this podcast, and even think about getting to sleep, without hearing it all the way through. Excellent, thought provoking, discussion! Questions asked. Questions answered. Some that lead to even more questions. Being a Christian, responsible firearms owner, retired U.S. service member, constitutionalist, and a believer that everyone has a right to self-defense, and the defense of others, who are in harms way, you pretty much know where I stand on this topic. It made me think about the evolution of mankind, and the development of tools, such as firearms, and why God has allowed us to evolve, not just as people, but also the evolution of everything that we use in everyday life. From a fist, to a rock, to a sharp stick, sword and, now, fast-forward, to present day firearms, for self-defense and self-preservation. God's will? Free will? It's a lot to contemplate. I don't believe that, scripturally, God would not want us to defend ourselves, and others, using a modern day tool, like a firearm. He just doesn't want us to be an evil aggressor using those tools for a selfish, illegal, or unjust, purpose. We have to be responsible people, using all that He allows us to possess, and righteous in our use of those things. JMHO
