The Loaded 4X4 team (David, Rose, Steane and Georgia) head to Bendleby Ranges in the Flinders Ranges to drive the all-new 2021 Isuzu D-MAX and Mitsubishi MR Triton back to back, over some amazing tracks in the Hungry Ranges.
We think they both have Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, one beeps a lot but has great cupholders and the other punches well above its weight, twice, and we love a good cliche.
So which one gets our votes? You'll have to watch the vid to find that out!

Good review but I have a feeling the reviewers had more knowledge of the DMAX than the Triton. I have the 2019 MR GLS Prem & the tech level is pretty even. Its not called IDAS on the MR but it has the same collision mitigation tech, lane depature,auto high beam, wipers, even a 360 camera (which my wife loves). By Platform you must mean the chassis as a lot has changed from the MQ. Same 4N15 engine introduced in 2016 so it has some stats on reliance. New 6 speed auto in 2019, new larger front brakes on higher end models, heated seats, heaps changed in the cabin, new exterior panels and styling. Essentially tried to give us a new ute without a total new build like the DMAX. But yep the suspension as mentioned is garbage, something to upgrade with that extra 8k handy :)

Hi everyone, great video, I have an x terrain on order, expecting in August. Great to see a local SA team producing some content. I have one question, Rose mentioned heated seats on the D-Max, every other review I've watched or read has pointed out the lack of heated seats on the D-Max. Can you confirm that the D-Max you had did actually have heated seats? Is this something Isuzu has added since launch last year maybe, since I have been watching older reviews? I know the Mazda BT-50 twin does have heated seats.

Hi there Neil, David here and I'm to blame on that front as I muddled up the product info the team were working off. We decided we needed to get the film out there pronto and figured that I'd have to own up to it! I'll call that my Loaded 4X4 Mea Culpa, but I won't be falling on a sword anytime soon! So in answer to your question, no, new D-MAX doesn't have heated seats. Thanks for watching and spotting my mistake! Hope you've subscribed???

That's a great hack and thanks for sharing. When we collected the vehicle it didn't have an owners-manual in it so it was a fair bit of guesswork at the start working out all the features... and there are plenty of them!!! I do remember pushing the magic button you're referring to whilst we were in town and didn't notice any change (obviously because there wasn't any scrub or rocks nearby to ping off) so I turned it off and didn't think to have another crack up in the hills. Wish I did now and now we've got a book to read I'll make sure that page is scrutinised thoroughly. Thanks for watching and please subscribe if you haven't done so already!

I thought it was a missed opportunity towards the end of the video that the girls didn't utilise 'descent control' on the Triton rather than using low range first gear when heading down a slope but old habits are sometimes hard to break. I enjoyed the effort you all put in. Keep up the good work. Subbed.
@Whos-That-Guy
@Whos-That-Guy 3 года назад
Safer to use engine breaking down hill, if the gear box holds first gear. Some don't. Hill decent control uses the breaks which may overheat on long runs. I have a 2021 triton and I've never needed hill decent control cos low range on it is good enough to allow you to crawl safely down anything. But I do agree it would have been good to seem them test it.

At the risk of offending him it'd have to be user error or very, very bad luck. Never say never can happen, but I've been running them on a heap of my own vehicles and trailers for the last ten years or more and the only failure was just a month ago on one of my hire Kimberley Kampers. A client didn't subscribe to my pressure recommendations and copped a stone flat travelling likely too fast on a gravel road. Ran it flat until it peeled apart. I've recommended them to thousands of clients in my training courses and plenty have bought them on my experience and all comment about how quiet they are, great grip on all surfaces (not mud obviously) and exceptional durability with long life and no chipping and tearing on gravel. Send him my commiserations!

I have a 2016 T32 Xtrail 4WD would you consider this a reliable good weekend car to hit the beaches around South East Queensland and maybe some of the trails?
@Loaded4X4
@Loaded4X4 3 года назад
Hi there Pieter. X-Trail is an AWD only and doesn't have LOW range, nor a great deal of clearance underneath. I think the best environments for it are high-speed (0>80km/h) dirt roads where the AWD system really shines in the grip department and hard-packed and flat beaches are about its maximum capacity in a true off-road sense. It'll struggle in steep country because the gearing is too tall (HIGH range only) and you run the risk of either burning the clutch (if it's a manual) or frying the auto transmission if it's overloaded (climbing too steep a hill or ploughing through deep sand or mud). Last one I drove I remember that in the "LOCKED' 4WD mode it would hold that position until 40km/h then disengage and revert back to AWD (with a bias to FWD until the slip occurred). When that happened it would bog down. Not ideal. In your part of the world you could negotiate Moreton or Bribie Island after rain (rain makes sand hard and dense) with a substantial reduction in tyre pressure (say 15-18psi) reasonably reliably, but don't go there when the sands are bone-dry because the car will struggle. Here's the first part of a story about Moreton that you might find useful loaded4x4.com.au/somewhere-to-go-moreton-island-qld/ and there's this extra in part two loaded4x4.com.au/somewhere-to-go-moreton-island-qld-part-two/

@Loaded4X4
@Loaded4X4 3 года назад
Yep, I forgot to mention the Triton's trans cooler. That, the Aisin auto, Super Select and it's big diffs, make it one of the best drivetrains in these utes. Pre Covid, people would look at the price and think it was cheap and nasty, when it was really Mitsubishi's sales strategy, that and continual discounting. In fact, I would argue the Triton has been well-priced and some of the other brands' utes overpriced. Steane

We all agreed the D-MAX was the better ute, but two of us (Georgia and me) preferred the Triton off-road and appreciated the value for money it offers in comparison, so if we had a choice, with our money, we'd both buy the Triton. I think I speak for everyone at Loaded 4X4 when I say we think there are a few utes that we'd rate above the HiLux right now. But we'll reserve our judgement until Toyota finds one somewhere that they can get to Adelaide for us to drive. I personally don't mind the Lux but I don't think it's the holy grail of 4X4 utes. Who will win dmax or triton
@anthonyramdin1037
@anthonyramdin1037 3 года назад
First time viewer here, so hear are my thoughts. 2 of you based your verdicts off of the comfort of the vehicles which shouldn't be if you're looking at it from a 4wd perspective. The triton hands down is the better off roader, you admitted that when you showed that the triton has a better traction control system. Even 4wd 24/7 said it was the best. So why would you say the dmax is more comfortable when debating the topic of off road? Yes we all know the dmax is more comfortable, it has the best interior of all the utes but that comfort as in terms of luxury has nothing to do with off road driving. Off road driving has everything to do with suspension travel, low range gearing, engine breaking, traction control, lockers and has nothing to do with creature comforts. The triton trumps the isuzu in off road driving. Now don't get me wrong I have nothing against isuzu, I actually was looking at buying an mux back in 2016 as a family vehicle but didn't because of lack of accessories. Do you guys get what I'm saying? Just my humble opinion and I could be wrong but that's what I deciphered from the video. But otherwise great video guys, y'all did some really tough tracks there and displayed some really good driving. Cheers guys
@Loaded4X4
@Loaded4X4 3 года назад
Hi there, we're a bit different to the 24/7 mob, which isn't a criticism, it's just that we're different. There's four of us, only two of us are blokes and we see and experience the cars differently and from different points of view. Georgia and I (Steane) gave the Triton the thumbs up, partly due to it being better value and partly because we thought it was better off-road. If you look below the vid you'll see a link to an article I wrote that confirms my view that the Triton is better off-road. We've made the decision that we can disagree with each other, because this reviewing bizzo is all just opinions anyway. So sometimes we'll all agree and sometimes we won't. Not every show will necessarily be a shootout either. Ep2 for example features the new Defender and the Jeep Gladiator, which will never be cross shopped, but seeing what they can do on and off-road, tech vs solid axles, is interesting...and fun!

Practice makes perfect though and it's not easy to do. BUt it could be better. 2 - The non-linear style of the edit made it kind of weird to watch. Seemed like we jumped back and forth a bit. 3 - 87min is too long. I think you could have edited this to be 30min. 4 - That camper looks awesome! I checked out their website and they START at 56k without any of the fancy air bag suspension. Yikes. And that brings me to the end. Why does the Triton still have 2WD? 1. Fuel Economy 2. Drive Line Wear / Maintenance 3. Tyre Wear and less tyre rotations 4. It’s amazing how far you can go without needing 4H
@loaded4x4store82
@loaded4x4store82 2 года назад
2H v 4H there is hardly any difference in fuel economy, in my experience it's imperceptible, in Triton, Pajero and Pajero Sport. Driveline wear differences between the two would be negligible as the front driveshafts and part of the diff are still rotating, it's not like an old fashioned part time 4WD system with hub locks which isolate the driveshafts, diff and front prop. Tyre wear is no different between 2H and 4H at all in my experience, Mitsubishi's wheel alignment settings cause the only premature tyre wear issues. Get the alignment right and the tyres wear fine. 4H is safer for a few reasons but also removes an off-the-line drivetrain vibration that many MRs suffer from in 2H, most likely because less torque is pumped through the two piece rear tailshaft.

Great review guys and girls. One thing that was not covered though, is long term ownership costs. Servicing costs, warranty coverage etc etc. Even my wife has started to talk lately about a new ute, to build up as our camping rig. The new Dmax (and its BT50 twin), and the Triton would be at the top of the list. The smaller purchase cost of the Triton, with Mitsubishi's 10 year warranty and 10 year capped price servicing scheme, make me feel like the Triton is the safe choice.... We only do around 15K a year, so the ownership costs for a Triton would be completely known, for a full decade.

Hi Dan, thanks for the feedback! We're kind of trying to avoid the nitty gritty stuff to an extent, so that we can concentrate on the driving experience, and because it fries our brains a bit, like trying to work out how the infotainment systems work, but I (Steane) hear what you're saying. The MQ has been pretty much trouble free for me so far over more than four years of ownership. I don't use dealers for servicing and wouldn't even if there was a fixed price deal and I think the 15 to 20k service intervals manufacturers are pushing these days are a false economy, designed to entice buyers via reduced cost of ownership but NQR for the car. I guess the reality is most people don't keep a car long enough for shoddy servicing to cause them an issue. That probably doesn't help you much sorry...🤔

Always highly convient when there is a split winner... Don't want the manufacturers to give a reason not to let you borrow their cars for a review.. Just jump on the bandwagon like every other "review/comparison" this year 👍🏻 Other than that, loved the content!! It's OKAY, to have a favourite!!! Maybe even assign categories to they each win in their own area.. anyway.. food for thought.
@Loaded4X4
@Loaded4X4 3 года назад
Interesting comment and thanks for the positive feedback as well! The split decision wasn't planned at all, and in fact, I (Steane) went into the last studio session thinking I'd be the only one of us choosing the Triton, making Georgia's choice a real surprise. I reckon Georgia and I could very well be the only reviewers around to choose the Triton over the current D-MAX. It's often thought that reviews are rigged to keep the peace with manufacturers, but thats not our reality. Our experience is that provided the reviews are balanced and fair, most manufacturers accept the outcome, it's only when you turn a review into a controversial clickbait production and/or unecessarily damage the cars, that you run into trouble. Advertising and sponsorship, on the other hand is where it can all get a bit murky and there are plenty of examples of money influencing review results or a reviewer/influencer/personality being paid to have a certain opinion. That's not us though.

My only dislike with the Dmax.. With the Dmax they have incorporated a feature that when connected to a trailer the system automatically turns OFF the rear parking sensors, BUT when towing they expect you to turn off features MANUALLY... ( ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-u3hbn5afgF8.html ) , If they can automatically turn off parking sensors, WHY can they not automatically turn other features off too.. ? (Just dont turn off car , when stopping for a Pit Stop , LOL) Camper Trailer : Only a few manufacturers have catered for the fitment of the Waeco/Dometic 95ltr fridge.... So thats a Bonus!

Such a shame you’ve formed that view but we produce this program with our own money and we are very selective when it comes to developing paid content and as that happens we’ll declare it. Isuzu provided us with a press vehicle and that’s it. The reality with EVERY 4WD show, even 24/7, is that they’ll be receiving funding from advertisers to produce their content and make a living from it. That makes them guilty by association too! The only way you can escape this monetisation model is to have the viewer pay per view.

Design and engineering inadequacies creeping into all of these, so called off road vehicles. The point in case was the steep decent off Pats Peak, where all cars where on brakes, no retardation from gearing/transmission. High geared? Lack of sufficient low range gearing? No torque convertor lock up? How were they going to be driven home in the event of a brake failure? An over reliance on brakes, which BTY, all of the safety systems operate through the ABS. I'd put money on a series 1 Landrover driving down there without any brake input at all! Modern vehicles are losing the off-road cred. Or perhaps this rash of modern design engineers, do not know what off-road driving requires?

Hi there and thanks for your interest in the show. Please allow me to offer a response that might allay your fears about any bias. In fact for likely the best context I’d suggest you head over to our website and read the two most-recent supporting articles (Steane on the Triton and me David on the DMAX) where you’ll see we are brutally honest with our opinions. Re the commentary in the episode... as we were reviewing only two vehicles and one of them is new there’s a pretty good chance it’ll get mentioned a fair bit. We stated quite clearly that the Triton had the better capability off-road, that the Triton had the best transmission in the business and features that were equal to the best in class. I don’t think we’ve been unkind. Triton was so good that when time came to pick which one we’d spend our own money on, it split the panel, two opting for the D-MAX and two for the Triton (and that result wasn’t designed). We’re lucky enough to drive everything and these two standout as being the best in class. There’ll be people who call foul and say we’re ignoring Ranger and Hilux but the truth is the Ranger is at the end of its current cycle and Hilux is halfway through. D-MAX is all new and a very good vehicle and the best by a nose. I think you’ll find we’ll evolve in different ways as we release each new episode and you’ll find other interesting content. Come back and view sometime.
