Let's see if we can steer ourselves in the right direction today!
After years of planning and implementing ideas, we've finally arrived at the point where steering is necessary... I mean it's not like it's THAT critical. So, after having sorted out the suspension geometry such as Ackermann, Bump Steer, Camber, Caster, KPI, (and probably a few I've forgotten) in Episode 18, TODAY we can press on with adding the electric assist column (EPSC) from a Chevy Equinox, and connect it all together.
How hard can it be right? Just mount it and move along...
Like you, we can't wait to see this beast on the roads someday, so I hope you'll Subscribe and hit the notification bell so you won't miss that experience with us!
Please SHARE this video with your friends, it's a small step that will really help us out!

Get your manifolds ceramic coated, inside and out, and maybe wrap the downpipes where they run in the engine bay (if there's room) and you'll have a lot less heat transfer up the steering shaft. Anyway, looking great!

Also air escape vents from to bonnet area to let the hot air out upwards. Bonnet louvres are good. The Le Mans Spitfires (they had essentially the same body) used Herald 1200 radiator grills, cut down, in side vents.

I always get like this little jolt of joy when I see a new video pop up on my subscriptions page from you guys... and while I watch nearly every other channel at 1.5 x the speed, I slow yours down to normal speed so I can savor every second... and make that joy last a bit longer. I knew that a new upload wasn't far away, I mean... after all Bad Obsession just uploaded something (not Binky related... sigh) so I just knew that an upload from you guys wouldn't be far behind. I wish I could do more for you guys... I closed up shop and sold most of my tools (sorry, already got rid of my lathe)... so it's not like I'm ordering anything these days BUT I know I found you at least 10 subscribers since all of this started and who knows the multiplier on that. Those 10 found 10 more each and they found .... I wish it worked like that. Just know that I just love this project and all the work you do and I'm very grateful that you are sharing it here with all of us.

After binging this series in the last day whenever i got a chance, this might be one of my top 5 favorite builds on youtube and not that it matters as im nobody, but the only thing that doesnt sit right with me is the design decision on the front bumper, and to say something constructive and not just be a hater about it is it needs to follow the curve of the door under the body line as everything from the back of the front tire has that curve all the way back and the render had it looking like the bumper hangs down further than the side skirts other than that this entire build has been really high quality and well thought out and planned and im completely impressed and excited to see where it leads.... instant fan... Absolutely wonderful build! I had a GT6 Mk2 back in the day, and I dropped a 2.5PI engine into it, and I thought that was radical, but an LS? Jeez. Your engineering skills are off the chart. Love the way you mounted the rad - TVR did the same on all Griff’s (I have owned one for decades) and other models, but they added a swirl pot which I’ve not seen on the posted videos which I have seen. I’ll keep searching for you videos. The GT6 is a gorgeous car - I loved mine to bits, and kinda wished I had never sold it.

Overjoyed to see a new installment, coming on nicely, had the feet clearance issue with one of my builds, so had to lower a section of floor, got us out of a jam.

Nice works guys! If budget allows a custom built steering wheel could be made with an offset that would position the wheel either closer or further away from the driver. Lets hope for proper alignment of the planets that will bring you new tools and garage sponsorship!!
@FanatikBuilds
@FanatikBuilds 10 месяцев назад
Thanks David! The wheel currently has a quick-release installed, so there's already 1.5" of optional offset baked in! In the end I don't think we'll keep the quick-release ... likely replace it with a solid block, or just remove it entirely. But I'm happy with fitment as it sits! Haha, that would be awesome, particularly the garage bit! 😅🤞 Cheers man!

I love that a steering column with 2000 parts cost less than a small black box which you will never be able to open. I am just 5'11" and my eye line in ever modern car i around the rear view mirror, viewing traffic lights or anything above pedestrian head height, or anything behind the steering wheel, like speedo, is some what troublesome. What you have no worse , so you are up with modern car standard. Yes I have driven a Triumph Spitfire across Europe on a road trip with my brother . Hope i live to see this completed, it is epic.
@FanatikBuilds
@FanatikBuilds 10 месяцев назад
It is quite ironic isn't it! A big reason why I'm trying to fit as many used OEM parts in here, as the new aftermarket stuff is priced ridiculously these days! Good to hear, legs/torso proportion makes a difference, but I agree that the rearview mirror is usually pretty low in cars these days and often gets in my eye line as well... thanks, it's been a lot of work, but it's pretty comfortable in there now considering everything! Sounds like a great road trip, I'd love to do a cross-continent one with ours someday! All the best, and hopefully it will be done in the not too distant future 👍🤞

Great to get an uodate from you! As usual, the work looks excellent. FYI, that flat spot, plate and lock nut contraption on the original GT6 steering column is not a safety feature. It isn't designed to colapse in an accident (they didn't worry a out those things in the 1960s when the car was designed.) It is used to adjust the steering wheel closer or farther from the driver. But... I recently watched a YT video where much of the adjustment had been used, moving the steering wheel back closer to the driver close to the maximum amount possible... the result was a lot of vibration felt in the steering wheel. Once it was adjusted to position the steering wheel closer to the dash the vibrations largely disappeared. The video is on Elin Yakov's "Rusty Beauties" YT channel. I agree with another post that heat from the exhaust may be an issue. The steering column in my Land Rover is nowhere near that close to the exhaust manifold, and it's heat wrapped from the factory. (Getting a bit tattered now, 26 years later.)
@FanatikBuilds
@FanatikBuilds 10 месяцев назад
Hmm, everything I've ever known about the design of this column was indeed for safety reasons, as it's not easily adjustable to fit the driver, as modern cars are. Either way, it could serve both purposes I guess! What we've ended up with is the clamp being positioned right at the end of the original flat spot. So there will be as little twist as possible with these parts. 👍 We'll increase the clearance around the exhaust as much as we can later (with a grinder) but ultimately some heat shields, sleeves and ceramic coating are all we can do, so we'll find out! 😅
