I was concerned about the sharpness, but I sit 17 feet away from a 150in screen. I got the projector and it’s awesome. Sharpness at my seating is perfect. It’s bright and colors are awesome. Highly recommended it
Great review Chris. I really like how you demonstrated lens shift and lens memory. Very slick. I’ve been very pleased with my 5040UB. One thing I wish it has was auto switching between 16:9 and 2.35:1 presets like my previous Panasonic AE8000u had. Keep up the great work.
Just installed an Epson 5050UB in my basement. Hands down, best projector under $3k. Black levels are very good and lots of color brightness for sports viewing with some lights on.
Have to agree, this projector is a beast. Just purchased it, have been trying to fault to see if I needed to move to a JVC nx5 or nx7, but seriously there is no reason. The 4k it produces is sharp and the lens zoom goes a little further at 2.1. Add to this the low lag for gaming and this projector is a beast! This guy is going to eat the competition. It might not be as good as a nx5, but it doesn't need to when it's half the price and gets you 90% there! Seems like 4k projector are finally starting to become mainstream, no longer a need to pay 15k for a good one!
Awesome shirt, great review. I've had the 5050 for a while and am in love with it and it's good to hear that you agree. I would love Epson to up the resolution another step for some extra sharpness but to maintain all the other good stuff about LCD projector technology.
*Love my **Bestt.Digital** projector. It’s the perfect size for a bedroom and it’s super easy to setup. It works great with a firestick. I would highly recommend it.*
This looks amazing! I've been contemplating a projector for a while and this might be it! Thanks as always for the quality content and love the Tribe Called Quest in the background!
I don't know anything about projectors and I do watch a lot of RU-vid. I just am new to projectors. I watch a lot of gamers, Nexus, derbauer, etc for computers so I've never run across this channel. I liked and subscribed immediately. I love the way your content flows. You have a great voice and the script or bullet points that you followed was excellent. I will definitely be back.
I actually bought the 5050 and returned it. Not that the picture quality was bad, because it wasn't, it was the dam lens shift that drove me INSANE. I guess it's good that they put a remote / motorized way for you to move the lens, and the memory function for it "should" make it so you only have to set the lens for each input once. However, that's where the problem came in for me. It didn't, and EVERY time, and I mean EVERY time I would switch inputs, the lens would "try" to set itself to the memory setting I had, and get it wrong EVERY TIME. So what that boils down to is, every single time I would switch inputs, I'd have to spend a minute or more re-adjusting the image, and I just began to hate it. So I went and got the Epson 3800 Pro, which just came out, and is the 4K Pixel Shifted (Same as the 5050) direct replacement to the 3700 I've had for a few years. It works exactly like the 3700, but is 4K capable. If you directly A/B'ed the 5050 and the 3800 right next to each other, would you be able to tell the difference? Maybe, but to me the 3800 looks just as good as the 5050 did, and I don't have to reset the lens every time I change inputs. Oh, I also wasn't crazy about how big and heavy the 5050 was. The 3800 is about half the size and weighs much less. That matters when you're having to hold it up while mounting it. Here's Projector Central's Review on the 3800, and it's pretty spot on. They love it as well. www.projectorcentral.com/Epson-Home-Cinema-3800-Projector-Review.htm
@@majorhamburgers102 - Hi, Ryan. As I mentioned above, if you were to A / B the two, you "might" see a difference, but having had both in my house at different times, they seem pretty much the same to me. My home theater is light controlled, in that there is no sunlight getting in, and the walls are both black and white near the screen.
Because of you I picked up the Benq HT2050 in 2018 as my very first projector and was blown away with how good a projector image could be. I’ve just purchased the Epson 5050ub and I’m completely confident I’ve made the right choice because of you (doesn’t come in for another two weeks)
I considered this pj but ended up with an HT3550, which has performed wonderful. I am super jealous though of all the motorized lens shift/adjustability though! Great review and sweet shirt dude!
Excellent video man! Thanks for the review. They are currently building my house and I have been looking for a 4K projector that makes movies look great and also has low input lag for when I game. If you have any suggestions for another one let me know. But for now this one is on the top of my list.
Nice Review as usual my man! I am still super impressed with my 5040UB for now. Everyone who watches it in my Home Theater is blown away! I am using a 135in Silver Ticket Screen.
Epson projectors are by far the best for multipurpose rooms. I have the epson 2150 in my living room and it handles the ambit light great. I set it to dynamic and watch some football in the day so. And at night set it to bright cinema or standard cinema and its perfect.
Not really, the fact that is projecting the black bars outside of the screen, does not make them disappear. You will still lose 33% of the vertical pixels and light output when watching 2: 35: 1 content, since projector's panel is 16:9. In order to get 2: 35: 1 image without an external lens, you will need to get a native 2: 35:1 projector. Those are very expensive projectors, they usually cost over 30k-40k.
@@georgepopescu1327 You're wrong, re do your research about this on the Epson 5050 again. They've had this feature working since the 5040 projector from 4 years ago.
@@handsomejustin Lens position memory != Native anamorphic projection. The Epson does the former, which is a nice feature allowing you to fill a 2.35 screen from edge to edge and switch quickly to the lens position you need to do 16:9 on the same screen (with bars on the sides). But, as George points out, you're not using the full pixel array in the projector to do 2.35 via this method. For most, this is a fair trade, since the 2.35 image on 4k discs is not anamorphic as recorded on disc (most/all producers using the 4k bluray format for 2.35 simply disregard the extra pixels top and bottom), and the Epson is already plenty bright and plenty detailed for all but the largest screens. The Epson does have a feature that allows you to resample the 2.35 image on the disc (stretch it taller) to fill the Epson's 16:9 array, then you can squish it back down via an external anamorphic lens to project onto a 2.35 screen. This, combined with the Epson's lens position memory, is a good option for some folks, and may come out cheaper than a projector with a native 2.35 panel. Still, this is not a native 2.35 projection. You have the potential to perhaps gain in detail since the disc itself has more recorded pixels than the projector's native panel and this method uses all the pixels available in the panel to render the final image, but you also lose some detail resampling for the stretch. You gain in light output overall by using the full panel, but you also lose some light output via this method due to the anamorphic lens reflecting some light back into the projector. Two steps forward, one step back on the light output and (possibly)detail, and it requires an external lens. The other caveat to this is, a lens of the quality you want to do 4k anamorphic from a native 16:9 projector costs about $6k, unless you use one of the older lens systems not really designed to pass the detail available in a 4k format, find a deal on b-stock, eBay, etc, or use a cut-rate lens type that introduces its own set of problems. George isn't wrong, he's just not typing as much about it and the possible work-arounds available on the Epson as I am. None of those workarounds are native 4k 2.35 projection, which isn't a feature of the Epson.
@@scotttild you don't get it do you? that lens is stretching the image so you will have all the pixels of yout display and all the light output of the bulb on the screen, otherwise you will lose around 33% of both light and resolution. For 3D and HDR this is a big deal actualy couse 33% of light output is huge.
Chris - Can I buy a black screen with this projector ? Was planning to buy the 150 inch Elite Screen Manual. The black screen is cheaper than the white screen currently.
Great review, as always. I’ve loved getting to learn about projectors form your channel man, thank you! You remind me of the best that TechTV had to offer back in the day!
VERY nice review! Adding this one to my list of projectors to upgrade to this year!! Keep it up! Love my current Epson projector so its really nice seeing the midrange line is that good!
Please allow me to clarify what is often misrepresented... the difference between sharpness and detail. The 5050ub is optically sharper than many of the XPR DLP projectors because it has a higher quality lens (it's current rival in that area when it comes to XPR DLP is the BenQ 5550). The XPR DLP's can have more detail in their image due to higher pixel count (8.3 vs. 4.15 million) but this does not make them 'sharper', that comes down to the optics (lens). The 5050ub may require some panel alignment in order to see it reach it's full potential and this will vary from unit to unit, XPR DLP is superior in this regard as it is a single panel (DMD) projection technology (vs. three panel LCD). As an example the unit that is mentioned in this overview (BenQ HT3550) actually has an inferior lens versus the 5050ub, it suffers from a good amount of CA and is not as 'sharp' as many other XPR DLP projectors (the Optoma units are generally sharper).
ive been with projectors for past 2 decades and have at least tried most popular ones at the time. But after seeing my friends 5030ub(1080p) i was floored by the colors but especially the inky blacks it produced! My at that time Acer V7500(4k dlp shifter) was noticably greyer and even though my 4k picture was much sharper(vs his 1080p) i found myself liking his more. The same evening i found out that Epson has 5040ub in the same UB line and its a 4k - i was sold. As soon as new 5050ub dropped i snagged it as well for another room and it was an excellent upgrade!. Was very excited when Epson dropped a supposed replacement last year, but after testing both Epsons new 11k and 12k ive decided to stay with my 5040 and 5050 since new Epsons have lost quite a few features for my liking (biggest would have to say 3D) and i would call this new generation more of the sidegrade if not downgrade
We are getting this over the Sony 290 as the difference in picture quality was marginal to our eyes and I couldn’t justify the extra $3600 to get the Sony. The other major positive was lamp price, the Sony is $750 and the Epson is $140. This is all in Australian dollars. We also looked at the JVC laser 4K which is priced the same as the Epson, my partner saw the rainbow effect on the JVC and the picture quality was not as good either. Blacks were washed out and the sharpness wasn’t there. Great review!
Hey Chris, I have the 6040UB, are you able to share your calibration settings, i have a 133 inch screen and would be good to see how your settings compare against the defaults
Hi Chris! I've been loving my 6050 for about a year now. Is there a clear way of activating low latency mode? I'm just assuming it's changing image processing from fine to fast? Keep up the great work 🔥
Hello, is there a way that you can also mention the European names on the projectors? Your channel here is by far the best when it comes to projectors. Thank you for your great videos and keep it up! :)
Been waiting for you to do an Epson review. Awesome review. That being said I think the 5050 is a bit outta my price range. You once said in a previous review that buying the latest and greatest may not necessarily be worth it. Were I to turn my focus towards the 4010 or the 5040, which would you consider the better overall choice?
I can currently get one of these for $2,700 from BB... going in a dedicated dark theater room... Have been looking at this as my baseline, but the more and more I'm looking at this, the more and more I'm thinking this is just the right deal all around. Can always upgrade down the road if I need to...
This guy needs more views . Most of these projector reviews or either knock offs of stock advertisement footage or some boring dude shaking his camera and looking into the box.
So how does it compare with your UHD60? Taking price into consideration along with the difference in technology, would you say the 5050ub is the better value or would you stick with the Optoma? I have the Viewsonic 747 now but am not happy with it and feel it is the time to upgrade. Clear and concise review as usual.
The uhd60 is considerably sharper but the epson wins with everything else. It's more of a matter of preference. As far as value goes though the uhd60 is still a great value. I'm big fan of color accuracy now and got rid of my uhd60 last year and went with the benq ht3550. Now I'm considering this epson for my theater.
Hey Chris, super job as always. What are your thoughts on the 6050ub, the same as the 5050? Also how about the new Epson ls12000. Any thoughts here. I just purchased the 6050 but I am thinking about returning it and going after the LS. I’d love to hear your thoughts and screen recommendations. My room is 20X21 10 ft ceilings, 2 window s with power black out screens,as well as 6 sconces and can lights? Let me know , I love your channel, keep it up. Edward
Love your content! I currently have a BenQ 2050a and have been extremely happy with it. I just moved to a new home and due to the BenQ's throw distance and the limitation of screen size this will no longer work. I have a 100" ALR fixed screen. The projector can be mounted anywhere between 13' 6" - 13' 1". So looking for a new projector. Looks like the Epson 4010 will work using projector centrals calculator. I am looking for a projector in the $1000-$1500 range. Room is not dark and no plans to paint it. It's a multipurpose room and just looking to enjoy movies and streaming content with the kids.
Appreciate if you could please see if it supports 120hz refresh rate on PC (or any other refresh rate above 60hz)? To do that on Windows 10, head to Settings > System > Display > Advanced Display Settings > Display Adapter Properties. Click the “Monitor” tab, choose your monitor’s advertised refresh rate from the “Screen Refresh Rate” list, and click “OK”
Hi there! Is this better than the vava4k? I know the vava4k is a short throw but my priority is the picture quality. Thanks in advance and great video!
Helli Chris, thank you for reviewing this projector. great video. but I have question about lense memory. do epson 5050ub had lense memory? like 16:9 for one and 2.35:1 ? so I can watch Netflix movies full screen without black line up and down or sports videos full. and also what about first person shooter games like Call of duty on this projector? can u suggest a projector or some projectors I can choose from? epson 5050 is 3800 CAD, which is affordable.. thanks in advance.
Buying - awesome review What would be best screen for it. Also, mounting and is it upside down while mounted? Can you comment on the wireless Epson 5050 ube? How can wireless be a good or bad option? Thank you
About painting your ceiling black, I just ordered some rosco tv black paint, it's the blackest paint u can buy. You have to buy that. I just finished painting my entire room with it and it looks like a black hole, next level up would be velvet fabric. Painting the ceiling did suck though, it always does.
you really should try black velvet fabric though if you went as far as painting everything black, it's seriously the endgame re: best picture quality possible.
@@aaromon43 I eventually will. Even though this paint was made specifically for movie/theater production, I hate it, if you touch the wall, you leave smear marks. The light switch area needs to be repainted again. Drives me crazy
same here. I set up a 5050UB and it's awesome, like the SSD for projectors, "it finally feels right in performance", but still on the price side. The HC3800 looks like the budget equal to the 5050UB/6050UB. less contrast, and manual lens shift, but 3000 lumens. perfect for living room entertainment.
Do you think that this is still the best projector under $3,000 at this point in 2021? I’m in the search for an all around projector and would really appreciate your input. Great videos BTW! 👍🏾
The only problem with Epson projectors is, that they don't have Motion Interpolation for 4K content. Apart from that they blow any DLP out of the water.
As a Epson 5050ube owner, curious if anyone has replaced the bulb in theirs? And if so which bulb did you get. Epsons site is forever out of stock. Just past the 1 year mark of owning it. I absolutely love this projector. Zero regrets purchasing, but unfortunately mine started to show white dots, but only on certain films. So far only 3. But gotta send it in.
I'm upgrading from my dinosaur epson home cinema 720 and this is one of top contenders I'm looking at. Question I have is what is the sharpness difference between this and the uhd60 or uhd51a? Is there a perceivable difference from 14ft away?
Hello dude! Love your reviews. I was wondering if you can advise which will be the best option. An optoma uhd38 (which is the best available in Amazon) or an xgimi horizon pro. I have a budget of about $1400. I'd like a short through, not ultra short. And the better 4k image quality. Thanks dude!
Hi Chris, another great review! How is this new version compared with the 5040? I found the 5040 on sale now and then and I believe that the specs are similar.
Not Chris, but If you mean the 6050 UB they're basically the same. I've had mine for a little while now. The differences I'm aware of are [obviously] the black housing which was a MUST for my room, an extra bulb and the included mount.
I purchased this projector ( but 5050Ube) based off of your review more than others. Now I'm undecided on what screen I should get. It's between an Elite Cinegrey edgeless 150" or a screen from Seymour Av. Any suggestions?? Have you used Seymour Av Screens? Their assembly is very easy compared to other high quality screens..
Great video as always! Would 5050UB make you switch from your UHD60? I’m taking it you didn’t have any issues with it but have you heard about the power supply issue with the 5050UB?
Yes I have considered this. I actually went from the uhd60 to the benq ht3550. I have considered using this as my new main. I want to try the LG hu85la next.
Hi first time viewer like what I see and like your reviews. I was wondering if you could review Epson EH-LS500W 3LCD Want to see if it's a better product than the vava projector
Great video man? I'm just wondering you said that the black levels are good but the video is showing different. The black bars are not black. I don't know if it's the setting on projector or is it the camera that you are using. This is the projector that I'm currently looking at. Thanks again for review.

Hi, I currently own a 5040ub... and im thinking about buying a vava ust projector, do you think its worth it? is the difference in brightness and contrast huge?
Hi Chris. I can't find comparison between Epson EB-L400U and Epson 6050UB for home theater. Could you tell something about it? (black levels, HDR?, absence of "4K" resolution, laser technology advantages) Thanks.
