Today we're talking Artpop, Lady Gaga's third album that many consider to be either her "flop era" or her misunderstood masterpiece that was ahead of its time. The album was inspired by pop art, adn the likes of Warhol and Jeff Koons, as well as how their work (and GaGa's music) operates in the high art world. The album is also inspired by high art from the Renaissance, like Boticelli's Birth of Venus. There are actualyl several Venus references in this era, be it Gaga's costumes, or the song on the album of the same title. I can't exactly remember the Warhol soupcan metaphor Gaga used to describe the album, but you can hear me make sense of it in the video. In Artpop, GaGa also grappbles with being a pop star, and an "archetypal" blonde one at that, and how society treats these stars. She covers this is songs like Applause, Donatella, Mary Jane Holland, and others. Love or hate the album, the Artpop era is a conversation piece on its own, because over the decade it's inspired several conversations as to what constitutes low and high art, what exactly "pop" and "popular" mean, how art is canonized, and how it's remembered.

i was fortunate to not know about stan twitter and "flopping" in general when artpop released so my reception to it was just "wow an electro gaga album this is awesome!!!" and playing aura/venus/mjh for hours 💫

Beyoncé's self-titled, Katy Perry's Prism, Miley's Bangerz, and ARTPOP - 2013 was THE year for huge pop releases!

It was how she incorporated EDM into the music too. No major pop star has ever just not sang for a minute or so and let a song break down into a long ass instrumental like in Swine. She also wasn't afraid to sound bizarre, "ugly" or experiment vocally. It is very quintessential Gaga. It's peak Gaga at her purest form. This is why I love Artpop. You can't really hear any other artist being able to cover or record most of those songs. It was also so ambitious and admirable in that regard.

Her biggest mistake of this era, and probably of her career, was working with R Kelly. She had to have known things about him even then. Still, I wish she replaced the original DWUW with the solo version or the duet with Xtina, cause it's a great song on its own.

this remains my fave Lady Gaga album. It was ahead of it's time and I respect Gaga for always being so experimental

it’s really sad that the rollout of the album was terrible because ARTPOP is probably gaga’s best album and deserved way more singles

I think the intention behind the album with the huge inspiration from Warhol and his work is coming into fruition. His work wasn’t consider good or even artistic during its inception but overtime became a huge staple in art culture, Artpop is on a similar trajectory in the sense of it wasn’t well received during its release but over time it will slowly take its rightful place as a high art pop record. I don’t think it was supposed to be a success in the traditional pop music sense it’s supposed to be a success in a high art sense. It takes time and ridicule.

ARTPOP is such a masterpiece 😍😍😍At first I thought the album was random and didn't make sense but boy all the songs are perfection😍😍😍It's really experimental and ALL the songs are good 👏👏👏I feel like this is one of her most underrated and misunderstood albums which was ahead of it's time 😁😁😁

Dope is one of Gaga’s most devastating songs, if not the most devastating. I feel like it is highly underrated. I really encourage people to look up the RU-vid music awards performance of the song. It is absolutely insane

I will go to war for this album!!! it influenced me so strongly in high school and gave me a greater appreciation for electronic influenced pop that I still carry to this day at 25. so so so ahead of its time. so sonically perfect. the concept is immaculate. I really don't have enough good things to say about the album (I choose to forget do what you want with my body was ever part of it lmao)

I had the privilege of having pit seats at the ArtRave and i gotta say, Seeing it live made the entire vision come together and make sense. The management switch before the album release was the biggest factor in the death and wasted potential of the era. Venus should of been the 2nd single like originally planned, Then G.U.Y, Then perhaps "Manicure" or "Sexxx Dreams" (the original planned lead single) since they are more mainstream and digest-able in a top40 setting
