Just maybe it's got something to do with Steve Martin's (now commercialized) sentiment. Everyone's too busy asking "how do I get rich doing this"... When they should be asking, "How can I do this well?" Admitted paraphrase, Martin actually quotes, "How can I be good?"... :o)

I've read another theory about this which I'll share for the sake of discussion, but be noted it doesn't come from a credible source. It is pretty interesting though. I have read some stuff online theorizing that Hatshepsut was adoptive mother of Moses from the Bible and that Thutmose III was Moses brother as a result and the Pharaoh of the Exodus. This theory states that Thutmose III erased Hatshepsut in the process of erasing Moses from history after Moses parted the red sea and escaped with his people. This is interesting because, for several reasons. First, it fits the Torah and Bible's internal chronologies better. Second it explains why Hatshepsut's cheif steward Senenmut had his monuments defaced as well (he was probably depicted with the then prince Moses as he was the princess Neferure). Third it explains why his military campaigns stopped when they did despite his reign lasting another 4 years when he previously had military campaigns almost yearly. Fourth, it explains why his decedent Amenhotep IV/Akhenaten tried to establish a monotheistic religion in Egypt a mere 70-ish years later. (this would have been around the time or right after the Jewish conquest of Israel.)
@buddylee3399
@buddylee3399 Год назад
Nefrure also disappeared from record, and she was very close with Senenmut. So that might explain why she disappeared as well.

That would make more sense (even if during that time Egypt would not really be seen as part of Africa it would not have been seen as part of Europe either). Also Alexander was the Napoleon of ancient Europe. And I feel ancient Egypt was so far back it needs a better word than ancient. Cleopatra for example was Queen of ancient Egypt but so far in the future form Hatshepsut that calling both ancient feels wrong. You don't get from that the huge 2400 years separating them if both are called ancient.

Everyone's complaining about pronunciation. How do we know how these names were pronounced?
@dIxIklo85
@dIxIklo85 7 лет назад
E3ECO we don't. All we can do is reconstruct it as good as possible. the coptic language for example is the oldest related language to the old egyptians. therefore we try to reconstruct it based on that. Mix it with a little arabic because...well, egypt nowadays is an arabic spraking country.... and you have what most of egyptoligists all over the world speak when they try to read hieroglyphs. there are more hints and tricks but that would go to far and is way to complicated. but nonetheless, if you lay that as a ground what the egyptoligists try to speak, his pronounciation was awull

Hatshepsut is pretty damn fascinating, a follow-up on Punt would be really interesting - there are many theories that Egyptian boats never reached Punt or that it never existed in the first place and the whole thing was an exercise in propaganda. I tend to think of propaganda as a mostly modern phenomenon, so any old examples like this (if it is propaganda at all) are really interesting.

This was awesome. I read a book about her in middle school and it did present the idea of her being an usurper . They do this a lot in history, any time a woman beats men at their own game and does it better, she becomes a malicious tyrant who would do anything to protect her power. They did the same thing to Empress Wu of China. Ruling a chaotic warlike people in any period of time is tough enough, I think women who were capable of doing it deserve respect not hate. So glad they're slowly, finally revealing the truth.

I believe that "pharaoh" is a gender neutral title and that these pharaohs took new leadership names (like the ascending pope) when ascending to the throne and also that in the statuary, females and male leaders may be represent the same or similar and because of these things, there is no ability to tell exactly how many female pharaohs there were. I heard in one documentary that they believe that there were at least three throughout Egyptian history. Hatsheput wasn't erased from history, she's brought up in documentaries all the time. She's probably one of the ten more notable leaders. Cool video.

4:20-4:27 Here's the thing. In Egyptian culture, they believed that whatever was written down came true even if it technically never happened. For instance if someone wrote down that the Nile dried up ten days ago then they said that happened. So maybe Hatsheput wrote down the story about the god visiting her mother after she was born and thus they believed it happened.

It's hard to understand the motivations and thinking of people from pre-modern-era times when it comes to government. It's been so long since we viewed all rulers as either incarnations of a god or an emissary chosen by a god to rule that most people can't even imagine such a thing. Between the fall of the ancient Greek city-states and the American Revolution, that was every nation. Every one was filled with people who believed that there were different classes of human being, some being divine or very nearly so and imbued with supernatural power to rule over normal mundane people. It's hard to understand the machinations of societies that operated like that.

So erased from history that I remember my school history books 22 years ago having an extensive write-up on her, and there are plenty of ancient Egyptian books that mention her. Maybe "forgotten" in comparison to powerful warrior pharaos like Ramses II, but that's not saying much. Therefore, we can safely conclude that the Ancient Egyptian did a poor job at erasing her from history.
