This portion addresses the spies who were sent into the Promised Land for forty days and their majority report that filled the Israelites with fear. Instead of trusting the LORD and following Moses, they rebelled and justified their fear by accusing the LORD of hating them and sending them into the wilderness to die. Joshua and Caleb, who were also part of the spies, tried to encourage the people, but the Israelites preferred the bad report and wept in their tents and complained against the LORD. Then the God of Israel proclaimed that the Israelites' entry into the Promised Land would be delayed for 40 years, during which an entire generation died in the wilderness, with the exception of Joshua and Caleb. The laws of the nesachim (meal, wine and oil offerings) are given. A man violates the Shabbat by gathering sticks, and is put to death. God instructs the people to place fringes (tzitzit) on the four corners of their garments, so that they will remember to fulfill the commandments.
