I am actually old enough to remember when this first came out. Rap music was not really being played on mainstream radio at that time (with a couple of exceptions...commercial stuff by guys like MC Hammer and Vanilla Ice). But REAL rap music was only being played on underground stations. In the late 1980's, one of the radio stations in Boston that was playing all the latest rap music was WERS at night (from 8 to 11). It is the radio station for Emerson college. I used to listen to them every night. I remember hearing them play Follow The Leader for the first time. Rakim was already my favorite MC but this track put him on another level.
damn history lesson right there but i feel u i wasnt old enuff yet to understand but from all the shows and docs i was like woowwww the birth of hiphop nothing greater then that
Eric B. & Rakim, EPMD, Boogie Down Productions, Slick Rick, & Big Daddy Kane are just a few of the hip hop pioneers I had the great fortune of growing up listening to. Over 30 years later, Rakim is still killin' it on the mic.🎤
Live deeep in the Mts of NY. I bought this cassette when I was 18. And now Im still listening to this in my car 30 yrs later. Rakim is the GOAT. I still have the tape> Ill covet it until I die. Great Times, The best Rap, nothing today can even come close to touching this $hit.
@@Bklynreau arite then > Microphone Fiend > Paid in full (Rakim) (McHammer) - Pump it up (one of the songs that put hip hop on the map, as far as the 'masses' are concerned i.e. white peeps lol) Wrath of Kane > Its a Big Daddy Thing > Another Victory🔥 I get the JOB DONE (Big Daddy Kane) Literally ANYthang by the (B Boys), Shake your Rump is a great place to start. (Fu-Schnickens) - La Schmoove 🔥🔥🔥🔥(game changer for lyrical prowess) Yoke the Joker (Naughty by Nature) the whole cd is a banger but this first track brought a whole new sound to hip hop. This is at the same time NWA came on, Naughty by Nature IMO is the east coast flavor compared to West coast at the time. La Di Da Di (SLick Rick)
I was 8 when this came out and I was just starting to "be outside" without my moms. This was on a silver boom box at the ball court where I can see the towers and the empire from Jersey. I didn't know exactly what was happening but I knew it was special
lol great story right there real hiphop at that time felt that way when i was 10 first rap song i listen to was dmx Ruff ryders anthem it was like the best thing i heard
You have to remember the time when this came out it was ahead of its time. Mainstream put this out quietly the didnt want to him producing more brothas like him.
Recommends part 2: Donald Fagan: IGY (What a beautiful world this will be) Fleetwood Mac: Dreams Stand Back Talking Heads: Once in a Lifetime Led Zeppelin: Casmere Dire Straights: Sultains of Swing Snap: I Got the Power Cameo: Candy Christopher Cross: Sailing (this one could stop a war in its tracks its so smooth lol)
My second tune I ever bought I am from Manchester England this was one of our breakdance tunes when we're having dance offs in the arndale shopping centre against other crews from around Manchester absolutely tune definitely best rapper hands down
And follow and follow because the tempo a trail, the stage is a cage, the mic is a 3rd rail….wow fire 🔥 Rakim is extremely extraordinary on the mic,,,,real talk
@@Bklynreau ok look I do but you have to know what you're getting into. The Devil Made Me Do It by Paris. Back story, he was/is a militant black nationalist that was a part of the nation of Islam at one time. His lyrics are predominantly politically and socially conscious. This joint hits hard. From 1990. Make sure you get the official video to get the full affect.
@@Bklynreau"As The Rhyme Goes On", song off of the Paid In Full album. "Lyrics of Fury" from the Follow The Leader album. I don't think you will be disappointed.

😊I've been a fan of Tha' Brothah' for a tad over 3 Decades.😎 Not only the lyrics, His flow Is specified as his style of A Hyper-Tone, Yet Laid-back Wit' it. Check out "The 7th Seal" tracks. Talkin' 'bout "Lyrical Hyragriphics (However Ya' spell it) Well, Any'Who, Education is embedded in his work Of Science, and other Universal Ingredients. You Won't Be Disappointed
Hey there was a native mc in the ninety area that was flames on the mic. Mark d and the occ ...try song title....deep or don't front. In 2005 he had a song called scalping.. its still fiire
I was born in 1971 . I was 10 years old in 1981. I was 20 years old in 1991. Which means i was Young Kid in the 1980's HIPHOP DECADE, And i was a Young Man in his Prime 20's throughout the 1990's HIPHOP DECADE. Which also means i represent the 80's and 90's HIPHOP ERAS in my Youth .
You have to listen to Blondie, Rapture. 1981. This just might be the first track with rap as we know it today. Maybe there was something earlier??? > but when this came out it made peeps aware that there was a new music genre budding on Earth. And now its History.
