Celine Dion's version is really good, but as with all her songs, it's more about her power and high notes than anything really heartfelt and poignant, as the original is. For me this song is a companion to "Without You" by Nilsson. And just as with the various covers of that song, nothing really tops the original.

@@Siansonea only problem is that Nilsson's wasn't the original version. The original was by Badfinger and released a year before Nilsson covered it. The 2 songwriters Pete Ham and Tom Evans both later committed suicide over not getting paid royalties from Without You.

Hi to Lyndhurst, Ohio from the U.K. Your boy Eric's remains the best version of this song by far. In fact, it's the only version worth listening to. I've always loved it. You can feel the depth of emotion in his voice. But don't even mention Celine Dion - just don't go there.

Hutchlover D's, I am from Northern Ohio as well. One of my favorite ballads when I was in school -- had never heard this longer version before. Loved his work as lead singer of The Raspberries (Go All the Way, I Wanna Be With You) -- one of many great acts to come out of Cleveland.

I don’t even consider this a ‘version’. It is the original. It’s Eric’s song. His heart ‘talks’ to ours. Others that come after offer versions - which we can appreciate and enjoy in their own right. However, this sets the standard. It is the superlative. The first and last word. X

The lyrics were written by Eartha Kitt. Carmen may have gotten credit for them due to licensing or whatever, but they were written by Eartha Kitt. Eric Carmen got his inspiration from a Rackmaninoff piece. He actually included part of it in the song - the classical part in the middle. Unfortunately he was sued by the composer's Estate. He now has to share his royalties and songwriter credits

I didn't know that Eric Carmen was the original singer of this song until now. I thought he only came with a one hit wonder, Hungry Eyes which heard once or twice. This song sounds like another 70's ballad by Harry Nilsson, Without You. Lots of great ballads from Air Supply. Making love out of nothing at all by Air Supply is such an amazing song, needs a reaction. Others who likes Air Supply, request their songs.

Everyone needs a sad song playlist. This is on mine. Nillson’s Alone Again Naturally and Janis Ian At Seventeen. Such a range of emotions on the radio. Everyone had the radio playing. You did Ballroom Blitz reaction then you might hear this on the radio. Then Chicago, Moody Blues, Three Dog Night, Queen, KC Sunshine Band, John Denver, The Carpenters. You are hearing how we heard.

"All by Myself" is a song by American artist Eric Carmen released in 1975. The verse is based on the second movement (Adagio sostenuto) of Sergei Rachmaninoff's Piano Concerto No. 2 in C minor, Opus 18, famously used to underscore the 1945 British film Brief Encounter. He used Rach twice (the theme and the middle 32 breakdown), and had to give royalties due to it wasnt 75 years since the composers death..

I was scrolling down to find out when someone would call out Rachmaninoff's Concerto! Eric Carmen did a great job of putting a classic piano piece into the current music of the 70's. It's a gorgeous piece of music--then and now. And the movie "Brief Encounter" used this piece of music all through the story---that's one really emotional movie, by the way. I loved it, but it's intense--just a warning. He lifted Rachmaninoff again with "Go All The Way". Carmen is an accomplished piano player,and he was doing us all a favor to re-introduce this amazing music into modern day songs.

Yeah, keep it up! You have a great channel. I love watching people react to songs I've loved for decades. It's almost like I'm hearing them for the first time. I was a young teen when this song came on the scene. A young enough teen to all of a sudden become interested in someone of the opposite sex; a young enough teen whose friends were starting to have boyfriends/girlfriends and I hadn't found anyone yet. I didn't know it was by Eric either Jayvee and I have loved this since I first heard it. Now I can add this to my favourites as I have tried to remember this for a long time. It's a beautiful song, a wonderful voice and the combination of the instruments makes it extra special to me. I like the way there is a lovely orchestral part in the recording, the whole record is just stunning and wonderful to just sit and listen to or dance a slow dance with your love and just enjoy, like you have sweetheart. I am so happy that I found you and have been able to listen to the music of the past with someone who is my grandchildren's age who really appreciates music from the decades of my youth. Thank you for sharing JV. I forgot all about this song and now that I'm a bit older then at the time this came out it hits you a lot differently when you get older. Especially for us guys who sometimes can lead solitary lives. Another one that gets me now is the Eagles song Desperado and Neil Diamond's Solitary Man (oh hell, you might as well throw in Gilbert O'Sullivan's Alone Again Naturally as well)! 😞

In my sixties. I was 23 last relationship I was in. Some people are meant to be alone. ,95% of the time we are fine. That last 5% can keep you up at night.
