Reaction music video to All by myself by Eric Carmen. This was later a huge hut for Celine Dion and a career defining song. #ericcarmen #allbymyself #musicreactions
As others have mentioned, this is, and always will be, an Eric Carmen song. It infuriates us when people hear it and say "Oh, that's a Celine Dion song." Yes, she covered it, but Eric wrote it, did it first, and to many of us, did it the best. The piano part alone is amazing.
I've always wondered why people call this Celine Dion's song. To me it forever will be Eric's song. In his hands it's such an intimate statement of aloneness. His piano playing added to the pathos of it, not that Rachmaninoff's composition didn't start it off with plenty. Later versions eliminated the source material, which I consider a major mistake rooted in arrogance. Did they think they could improve on Rachmaninoff? This isn't a version, this is the original, the foundation. Everyone else is a johnny-come-lately.
Jeric Turner, you are damn right. this song was written and sang by Eric Carmen in 1975. how in the world would this be a Celine Dion song when she was just 7 years old in 1975.
It's 10.30pm Tuesday night 12/03/2024 and I've just flicked the T.V. over to Ch 9 in Sydney. They were showing The Raspberries "Go all the Way" I thought "Why are they playing that?" "Is Eric touring soon?" Then I thought "Oh no he hasn't died" "Has he?" My fears were confirmed by the news voice over person. "Eric Carmen was 74" Now I can't stop crying. Not only did Eric help create one of the greatest, mind blowing Guitar riffs in Rock history, he then composed some of the most tasteful Ballads of all time. Good quality Ballads are extremely hard to write. Thanks for the great music and the brilliant singing voice Eric. Eric lived a successful existence and died peacefully in his sleep. "Come on Baby!!!" RIP - Eric Carmen
Eric Carmen wrote this treasure and played piano, as it's quite apparent he was trained in classical. He played other instruments as well I know the guitar for certain. He was and is a true artist. To me Eric Carmen's version is the only one. Great reaction Harri
""All by Myself" is a song by American singer-songwriter Eric Carmen released in 1975. The verse is based on the second movement () of Sergei Rachmaninoff's circa 1900-1901 , Opus 18. The chorus was taken from the song "Let's Pretend", which Carmen wrote and recorded with the Raspberries in 1972. The slide guitar solo was performed by studio guitarist Hugh McCracken.
Eric Carmen wrote this song that was released in 1975. If you grew up listening to the original like me from age 11, no one does it better. I think Celine has a great voice and her cover is better than others, but does not surpass the real deal. I heard her music producer, David Foster, came up with the idea for Celine to sing the chorus in a higher key towards the end for more drama. Now if I had never heard the original consistently over the years, I would probably really like Celine's cover, because it just a great song. Thanks Eric Carmen, good to know you are still writing at age 72!
I always connected with this song and even now, it brought tears. I'm so glad you were introduced to the original artist and the extended version. It's haunting, fraught with emotion, and beautiful!! Rest in peace, Mr. Carmen, and thank you. I also hear George Harrison in there. PS. My other favorite from him is "Never Gonna Fall In Love Again"
Carmen led The Raspberries, one of the first “power pop” bands in the early ‘70s. You should give a listen to that band’s hits: Go All The Way & I Wanna Be With You. A little bit more uptempo. For real.
I recall hearing this for the first time on breakfast Radio One whilst getting ready for school. I was transfixed at the beauty of it. Eric played the piano on this. Plus, he was soo pretty! Oh the 70s, I miss you.
Another great Eric Carmen (hit) solo track is "Never Gonna Fall in Love Again." Of course, his early-'70s songs with The Raspberries are quite memorable as well (though not as appreciated as they should have been because of the time period they appeared in).
Eric’s song for sure! We played this song of His all the time in college. This album is great. He is a genius and has been a prolific singer and Writer for years. Most underrated and unappreciated. A sure Hall of Famer! Classically trained and with the Raspberries was highly influenced by the Beatles. Loved Him and the Raspberries in concert.
This was one of Eric's first hits after his group, The Raspberries, broke up. I bought this album because I was a big Raspberries fan but discovered that this was a really great album. The whole album is good, but no one back then (1977) had any idea, including Eric, just how big this song would become years later. Eric Carmen has always been grateful that other artists covered his songs. When Celine Dion recorded this song, he made enough money from song writing royalties to buy his house.
Great song, great singer! Before his solo career, Eric was in a fantastic band called The Raspberries. Kinda like a cross between The Beatles and The Who!
@@LadyGator1983 I graduated from high school in 66 and UF in 70 and stuck around for another year and went to graduate school. Yes, I am decidedly old but still kicking. It was nice of you to reply to me. Go gator girls!
This came out about the time I graduated from high school. I appreciated the song but I really appreciate the lyrics more so now that I am 65 and my parents are gone and I am a life long bachelor.
As a young boy in the 70's i remember this song when it came out. Instantly loved it. Still do. My childhood memories to songs like this will always make me happy. Or sad. Im blessed to have both.❤
I prefer this one. The radio edit cut the amount of the middle violin parts and then go back in to the chorus. That is understandable, but I love this longer version. Eric is a great pianist.
This song made me fall in love with Eric Carmen, especially coming from a classical background and hearing him integrate the Rachmaninoff Piano Concerto No. 2 so seamlessly. I’ve never heard the Celine Dion version, but will check it out for curiosity’s sake. We lost Eric last weekend, and this week I’ve been playing my favorite Eric Carmen pieces on piano, like “Love Is All That Matters” (should have been a single), “Boats Against The Current”, “Never Gonna Fall In Love Again”, this one... RIP Eric.
Eric Carmen was my friend on Twitter. Our dogs died at the same time and he and his wife got a new puppy the same time I did. Was an honor that I felt I knew him outside of music as he is s True American Patriot and loves this Country.
Yes, but being a "true patriot" can be very dangerous. Fascists and Nazis were "true patriots" Trump supporters are crazy, right-wing, Fascist patriots. I love my Country with a passion and my Brother calls me a "Nationalist" That is not a compliment, it is a derogatory term. Though you can still love your Country without being a Fascist, in fact I'm a Left-Wing Socialist Humanitarian that believes in helping people that are hurt and damaged by Capitalism.
Yeah this song goes straight into your heart, digs a huge emotional hole in it and makes you want to listen to it again because even though it may make you sad somehow, it’s not a bad sad feeing, but it’s kind of comforting.
I wouldn’t say that Celine make a bad version, but this is excellent Beautiful, where Celine makes it a pop song, Eric has made it a Personal song with real feelings. I might be old fashion but the MOST Original songs i find still the better ones.
Thank you for playing the complete version of this beautiful song of art and your thoughtful reaction. It gave me more insight and changed how I listen to it.
My friend, my brother, I am a ghost writer and I must say , your talent in appreciating great music is immense. You know what great music is. Thank you for your intriqet and professional reactions. May God bless you, your the best. P.S..... keep those great reactions coming ..... Your friend and your brother.... James Zrenjad Desjardins.
That’s the long version which you don’t hear very often. Based on the second movement (Adagio sostenuto) of Sergei Rachmaninoff's circa 1900-1901 Piano Concerto No. 2 in C minor, Opus 18.
I haven’t heard or even thought of this song in many years but I remember when it was a hit in the radio. Thank you for playing it. I might buy it so I can listen to it often.
Eric Carman had a hit in the 80s with "Hungary Eyes" from the movie ?Dirty Dancing". Celine Dion had a couple more covers I can think of off the top of my head. The first is "The Power of Love" done by Jennifer Rush and "If You Asked Me To" done by Patti Labelle.
Eric Carmen did this live on the Midnight Special in 1976. He based the verse of the song on the second movement of Sergei Rachmaninoff's Piano Concerto # 2 in C Minor. The slide guitar solo was played by Hugh McCracken, who also played the solo on Steely Dan's " Hey, Nineteen. A bittersweet song.
This tune e is lifted directly from Rachmaninov's 2nd piano concerto "robbed " by Eric Carmen. He freely admitted it at the time Let's hear it for Rachmaniov as he wrote this in the gorgeous Brief Encounter movie theme also used by Director David Lean
Eric Carmen's other big hit around that time ("Never Gonna Fall In Love Again") is another tune that was lifted from Rachmaninoff. It was based on the third movement (Adagio) from Symphony No. 2 by Russian composer Sergei Rachmaninoff.
I didn't even know Celine Dion did this song. I've liked it ever since it first came out, in about 1974. Eric Carmen is the singer, and you should check out, Go All The Way, by Eric Carmen with The Raspberries.
Eric was brought up playing classical piano music. His words Are he was watching the Ed Sullivan show and Beatles were on and he loved the sound. Well later in life he was in bands called Cyrus, Raspberries but he kept some classical piano in a few songs I CAN REMEMBER is a beautiful song.
I know, right!?! I’d listened to this song for twenty years. Got turned into a classical music fan due to the Rachmaninoff influence. But only happened upon the longer version by chance a year or two ago while venturing down a very deep RU-vid rabbit hole one night. I love love love RU-vid rabbit holes. Those algorithms can really do some good too sometimes.
Eric Carmen was the lead singer for The Raspberries. The band broke up. He went solo. This is one of his solo hits. He sang and played piano. Written by Eric Carmen. The music is based on a composition written by the late Sergei Rachmaninoff, a classical pianist and composer. Covers. Celine Dion has the most popular one. Morissette Amon, Julie Anne San Jose, Peter Rosalita; and Pia Toscano covered this too. Suggested next video: Eric Carmen and Merry Clayton sing Almost Paradise. EC is the main writer. This version was not in the Footloose soundtrack.
You almost called it--not Tchaikovsky, but another Russian composer--Rachmaninoff. The root of this melody is by Racnmaninoff. Eric Carmen made it into a gorgeous song in the 70's. He used Rachmanninoff again with his song "Never Gonna Fall in Love Again" that he did with a group he played with called the Raspberries. He indeed is a great pianist.
I saw Eric Carmen with his group "The Raspberries" in the very early 70's and heard them perform their biggest hit, "Go All the Way". They gave away complimentary 45 rpm copies of their record in raspberry scented sleeves, which was pretty strange...but pretty cool too.
The piano near the end of the song is based on the second movement (Adagio Sostenuto) of Sergei Rachmaninoff's Circa piano concerto No.2 in C minor, opus 18.
Another very personal song of his is the underrated Boats Against the Current. I heard him say in an interview that it was the favorite song he had composed.
He was also the lead singer for "The Raspberries" who had a number of Pop hits in the early 70's ~ who had the misfortune of hitting the airwaves right after "The Beatles" called it quits so disc jockeys at the time started hyping them as "the next Beatles"
eric was lead singer for the power pop group the Raspberries in the early 70s in which they had some killer songs-Go All The Way, I Wanna Be with You, tonight and Overnight Sensation.
Length 7:10 (album version) 4:22 (single edit) According to Carmen, he first wrote the solo part of the song, writing four bars at a time, eventually completed the interlude after two months.[7] He needed to put this into a song, and after listening to Rachmaninoff's 2nd piano concerto, a piece famously used to underscore the 1945 British film Brief Encounter, he adapted the melody of its second movement to write the verse.[7] Rachmaninoff's music was in the public domain in the United States at that time, so Carmen thought no copyright existed on it, but it was still protected outside the U.S. subsequent to the release of the album. He was later contacted by the Rachmaninoff estate and informed that it was protected.[8] An agreement was reached in which the estate would receive 12 percent of the royalties from "All by Myself" as well as from "Never Gonna Fall in Love Again", which was based on the third movement from Rachmaninoff's Symphony No. 2.[9][10] Carmen has stated that he also incorporated part of another melody into this song. The melody of the chorus was taken from his previous hit with the Raspberries, "Let's Pretend".[7]
6:05 it is indeed beautiful. It is taken directly from the second movement of Rachmaninoff's piano concerto No. 2. Listen to that sometime. In my opinion, it is the most beautiful piece of music ever written. Carmen is a classically trained pianist, and has great respect for Rachmaninoff's work. When Carmen wrote this song, he didn't realize the piano concerto was not in the public domain. The Rachmaninoff Estate quickly let him know he was incorrect on that point. $$$
Love Eric Carmen, he's been around for quite some time. In the early 70's, he was with the Raspberries and their hit "Go All The Way" was huge, you should check it out. I believe he wrote this song in the 80's and it's the original, I haven't even heard Celine Dion sing it.
Carmen trivia....in the Raspberries he played a white Gibson Melody Maker guitar. Joan Jett saw them and asked Eric about the guitar and how much she wanted it. Don't what what she did but flash forward to the Joan Jett videos and she is now playing it.
HarriBest, I would like you to react to "Let's Pretend".......by The Raspberries (Eric Carmen was lead Singer) Incredible Drums, fantastic Raspberries harmony, and Eric belts it out the way he is so capable of doing. For those who have not heard this song on a good system, check it out.....AM radio did not do it justice! I look forward to your reaction to this song. Eric Carmen and the Raspberries were great.
"All by Myself" is a song by American singer-songwriter Eric Carmen released in 1975. The verse is based on the second movement (Adagio sostenuto) of Sergei Rachmaninoff's circa 1900-1901 Piano Concerto No. 2 in C minor, Opus 18. The chorus was taken from the song "Let's Pretend", which Carmen wrote and recorded with the Raspberries in 1972.[5] The slide guitar solo was performed by studio guitarist Hugh McCracken.[6]
Eric got pigeon-holed by his ballad writing, but he could rock out with the best of them. Marvelous songwriter who really knows his craft. The only thing I don't like about him is that he didn't write more. Such a talent. He's a God in Cleveland, where he's from, but he should be revered all over.
