Four years later and my opinion has never changed whatsoever. Eric Church is Absolutly one of the best singer/songwriters ever.

I'd always loved this song, but didn't pay attention to the lyrics, until I listened to it a few years ago. It's very sad, if you really listen to the lyrics. He can't go back to his hometown without thinking about his ex, and the memories haunt him so much, that he just wants to go back. The storytelling is what makes it my favorite Eric Church song.

My interpretation: When you were younger, everything was so simple. Life, all about your friends, playing sports in high school, and loving the ones you grew up with. Everything changes, friends die, and your hometown becomes something that you can't even go back to. You can't live there because all the memories have been killed. Your friends passed away, drugs took over, people change, and the way your hometown used to be is no more. All I want is my hometown back, the people, the laughs, the memories. We all move on, and all I want is my hometown back. great tune!

pretty sure the song isn't about him physically wanting to be back in his hometown that he got taken away from or something, i think he is saying that since he and his girlfriend broke up every place in town reminds him of her and makes him sad. He wants to feel the happiness he used to feel in his town, with his friends and their go-to places but he feels like she stole his happy place away from him because he can't get her out of his head wherever he goes in town.

I heard this song when I moved 1600 miles away to my first duty station. Made me real homesick. Regardless of its meaning it's got its own meaning for me. I love this song.

Eric Church is the most talented singer/songwriter on all of radio today. Unfortunately, he and his band have yet to receive the acknowledgment and accolades they deserve. CHIEF is one of the best country albums of all time. Great lyrics, great songs. It will be difficult for any country artist to produce a comparable project.

Like most songs that Eric writes, this one has a simple message that disguises it's complexity and craftsmanship. I think he is one of the best songsmiths in music today. Unfortunately, many artists are not necessarily in control of how a video story-line comes out- or how the vision is presented onscreen. This video needed a more obvious or less complicated story-line as it distracted people from whether or not they liked the song on how much they liked the video rather than the lyrics and tension in the music. Just close your eyes and listen, or better yet, spring for the album.

The talent that Eric Church possesses is undeniable. The creativity he has shown in his music so very new and refreshing. He has a way of putting a song together that, it can't help but to capture your attention and interest. There is one thing that puzzles me though, and that is why he does not seem to be recognized by the awards shows. He has paid his dues, and is absolutely deserving of this recognition and honor. Thank you Eric, for all the great tunes. And, I for one, look forward to hearing what you have in store for all of us in the future. What a GREAT TALENT!

this song really sticks with me. its one of the few songs that I can shed a tear listening to because don't we all just wish we could go back to when we were in highschool and just enjoy life as a carefree teenager again? when I was younger all I wanted was for time to speed up but now all I want is to go back and enjoy it.

I love the part at 3:48 where the guitar and tambourine come in. It's got a really atmospheric, pensive feel to it. Nice and nostalgic... just the way I like my Eric Church. If someone asks me, "Do you listen to country?" I say, "Nahhh dude, I listen to Eric Church."

Oh yeah, this song... reminds me of how I felt riding around my hometown after my ex dumped me. I had an old memory on every street corner, every store and half the schools... I moved somewhere else so the memories wouldn't haunt me anymore... Now I'm way happier. This is my home, now.

This song represents a musical revolution! Once again, Eric Church proves not just his professionalism as an artist, but, he shows his musical courage by leaving it all on the line again! I'd marry this man in a split second. A good head and heart on this man! I'm a single mom who grew up listening to country music and my boy will to. Eric Church always sings the songs to feel and also help get through tough moments.

He's saying here, take everything I have, you can have anything, just let me have my hometown (without your painful memories) back. Eric said the video was created to be part of a bigger story, with recurring characters for the other singles and videos that will come from this album. He admitted he didn't fully understand the story of the video either, and that when he wrote the song that wasn't what he had in mind. Just enjoy the song for what it is, a story about a man whose love left, and he still sees her everywhere in his hometown.

I guess artistic vision has no place in country music. This video was brilliant. This song is brilliant and it does NOT sound like a pop track. Do you even know what pop music is? Great job Eric! I can't wait for the album!

I can relate to this song, not the video. Everything about a place that used to be home reminds him of getting his heart broken. Been there.

To me it means that because a girl left him his home town isn't what it used to be and there's reminders of her around every corner. It makes sense to me because Ive felt that way for years.

I always thought I understood this song, but now, going through a divorce I truly do. Similarly to what he's saying, my favorite places in my town and even vacation spots that's used to bring me nothing but joy, now bring heartache because all I can think of is the times her and I shared at these places.

This makes me think about my hometown, Rosewood NC, all we used to be was a middle/high school and a crossroads with a stoplight, now it's freaking huge, and I know I'm probably missing the whole point of the song, but I felt I like I should say that

Personally, I don't classify Eric as a country artist. He's simply an artist - beautiful voice. I love the driving beat of this song - it should be classified as an American Anthem. Good job Eric. Keep 'em comin'!

Reading through the comments I have noticed that a lot of people are trying to analyze the song and the video to figure out the true meaning. When I first heard this song I was able to relate it to a part of my life, and that is the magic of Eric Church's music, a person can almost always relate it to their life. Whether it is a corporate giant taking over your small hometown or the memories of a long lost lover who haunts your hometown, it doesn't really matter. What matters is, that Eric Church was able to put words to your situation. At first I didn't like this song, I thought it was too mainstream. But after really listening to it, I think that this song means more to me than a lot of stuff we hear on the radio. It means more to me than "That's My Kinda Night" or "Cruise" or most country music these days. At the end of the day, I don't think it is about if the sound of the music is too mainstream or is too much like the rest, it is about the words. I find it interesting that a lot of people are disappointed in Eric Church, because honestly, there are few artists who can say how I really feel about something. If you haven't noticed there has been an increasing amount of songs about women, their sugar shakers, and their tight jeans. It takes a real man to sing about something that truly matters, something that many, many people can relate to.

Eric Church is the man. Every single one of his songs is amazing.

This song hits so deep when you're from Conway, SC and the Myrtle Beach area. Horry county will never be what it once was, but what it once was will always live on in my memory, and all the people who grew up here.

The song itself hits me a little different. I see it like this: I've grown up in this town I live in my whole life. I fell in love with an outsider you came to live here and he broke my heart. We were only together for a couple years but we decided to separate. We had made so many new memories in this town that now I wish I could forget. I have so many beautiful happier memories from my childhood innocence I've built in this town, but now all I see is all the memories he and I made that aren't exactly horrible, but bittersweet and painful, and now they haunt me. Growing up, I remember my grandpa watching Grand ole Opry and he would always listen to the Statler Brothers. He was an immigrant and to him, he really loved American culture. He listened to Nat King Cole, Statler Brothers, Beatles, and I don't think he really cared about "genres". A lot of people get caught up in "what's real hip hop" or what's "real country" or what's "white music". Lol my music library has a little bit of Styxx, Pink Floyd, Beatles, Big Pun, Nas, Allan Jackson, etc. 5 months ago, I was actually at a Zac Brown concert. Surprise! I'm not white. I'm Filipino American with a little bit of black from my dad's side. Music is music and I'm not "white washed" for liking country.... Lol I'm American and I'm just enjoying the diversity that we have in people and music.

This is what makes EC so awesome. He doesn't care about appeasing ppl like WVFreebyrd. He writes his own music does it for HIMSELF, not the general public and radio. He doesn't care what you think. The record label didn't want him to release 'Smoke a little smoke' because of the references to pot. He didn't care. The record label didn't either after they saw how successful EC is because ppl recognize that he isn't a phony out there to make $ and appease the general public.

The meaning seems straight forward but is obscured by broken memories, the same broken memories I have of my own life and I can now relive them through this song. Whatever deep secrets and meaning this song holds I find it releases it in me and I am thankful for it.

Eric Church is what the Country Genre needs. He writes his own original songs, that are no less than amazing, and they don't sound like pop with country accent, like most songs do, they sound like country with a little pop appeal
