Eric and famed producer Glyn Johns teamed up for the first time in forty years to record Eric's new album "I Still Do.” When Eric and Glyn sit down around Eric’s kitchen table for a candid conversation with legendary British comedian Paul Whitehouse, we get to witness some truly unique moments. Also included are several live performances of songs off the new album, along with behind the scenes footage of the studio recording.

Very interesting film, thanks for uploading it! I've been a huge fan of Eric's since his time in The Yardbirds, and have always loved his playing. Despite his legendary status as a guitarist, he's actually very modest about his extraordinary virtuosity...almost embarrassed by it in a way. I remember seeing him at the Blind Faith concert in Hyde Park where he seemed to deliberately avoid playing in the typical style of a 'guitar hero', which a lot of the audience resented...they wanted more Cream! The thing I love about Eric's playing is the emotion in it, that feeling which so many technically brilliant guitarists often don't have. God bless you Eric, and thank you for the music!

In his fall his fall down drunk days (70s), he said some awful shit! While having dear black friends!🤯. I think he “actually” meant it and like many (white) people on a journey, regrets that time. His music is GREAT! What he has done for blues & black musicians is laudable! As a person, though, he is a work in progress!🤷🏽‍♂️. He doesn’t have to be a saint.

This is still one of my favorite records. Thank you Eric for All the music over my lifetime. My music teacher in Early primary school introduced me to your music way back when she was named Miss Millie, later becoming Mrs. Pearlstrom. She was one of my favorite teachers, a nice ol' Lady. Still think you should come to Victoria, though come in the beginning of September, NOT NOVEMBER as Ringo did, then complained about the rain. Well Vancouver Island is/was a Rain-Forest and November was, before climate change always the windiest and probably the wetest month of the year. It still has the best climate of all Canada. If you don't wish to come here, and I do understand as the BC Ferry's are expensive now,.....Ridiculously so as a matter of fact. How about one more time in Vancouver. I would love to see you one more time in my time. (B-1967-D. Not Yet 🙂) RU-vid is great, I discover more of your music all the time it seems, or more of the different people you've played with in concert. The young Derek Trucks is just fantastic on the guitar isn't he. I am glad to be able to say I did see SRV here at The Royal Theater, funny cause that used to be a movie theater when I was a kid, saw Star Wars there as most kids my age did in 1977, why I remember that?...... All the very best to you.✌

All of these comments show how Eric has touched each and every one of us. The common thread I think would be how Eric is able to reach our emotions. I was 13 when Slowhand came out. The radio stations were just killing Cocaine and Lay Down Sally. I was already a huge blues fan and played a little boogie on the piano. When I heard Mean Old Frisco it was all over for me and I had to have that album Slowhand. The Blues took hold of me and at 56 I've never looked back. Eric the world is so much better with you in it....there's a story about you I've read that when you heard Jimi playing in London you said "I might as well put my guitar away". True or not, I'm so glad you kept on and keep on playing - forever in my heart you are. Signed - big fan in Cleveland OH USA.

Some people just cannot get it that not everybody started playing guitar to "Get Chicks". Some are just destined to answer a calling. Also, the amount of time it takes to get proficient, on the instrument, often lends itself to a solitary existence, at least for a period of time. My teenage years were like that. School and guitar. Nothing else for four years. I've also heard that ego is the driving force behind playing guitar. This isn't always true either. Some people are just born to do it, as if it were predetermined. If there is no love for what you are doing, it is noticed, and you won't go far with it. Eric is self-evasive because he loves guitar and keeps his ego in check. He doesn't play because he has to. He plays for the love of the craft.

@Spartanm333 5 лет назад
@@SteveGouldinSpain Gosh thanks. I would imagine Albert had a host of influences including delta blues artists like Bukka White and Robert Johnson, maybe Muddy Waters out of Chicago. Albert was heavy handed, a big man with large hands and fingers which contributed to his unique tone. Stevie Ray Vaughn, a skinny white ass of a boy, attempted to emulate this with 12 / 13 strings, overwound Texas specials and two in line TS8s. He also used two amps on stage to boost this further. This really pissed Albert off and he accused SRV of stealing his licks. How did I do Steve?

Clapton and Paul are very good mates, as they regularly go Fishing together. I think some people are missing the point that they both wanted a mate,ie Paul to do the interview. Paul Whitehouse is an English comedian and comedy writer in the UK and a massive Music fan, and I actually think its quite funny that hes treating Eric and Glyn like a mate would and isn't fazed by who they are as 'Stars'. Is it our English humor perhaps, maybe it comes across as disrespectful to a few people? it really isn't supposed to come across like that at all, Paul is a comedy legend and they really are all good pals!

+ AllieCatOfficial Don't listen too closely, do you? Listen to the section from 36.15 onwards. Paul Whitehouse (the interviewer) says "well, I think its time for you two gentlemen to go back to the [old folks'] Home..." To which Clapton reacts, comically, "Is the van [from the old folks' Home] here?" Then he and Paul Whitehouse start an impromptu comedy skit - Clapton (obviously pretending to be a decrepit old man, says "I've had a nice day sitting in the sun...can you wheel me (referring to his pretend wheelchair) nearer the sun...?" Whitehouse then imitates Clapton as an old folks' home inmate, "I've got a new album out..." Then Whitehouse pretends to be the driver of the van "...[disbelievingly] - "course you have, Mr Clapton..." Is it that you simply don't understand irreverent British humour? Everyone in the UK would have picked up that "comedy" section of the video. And if you were expecting Paul Whitehouse to be more reverential and "respectful" to Clapton, as an American interviewer undoubtedly would have been, you obviously don't know that Whitehouse is a highly successful individual in his own right (as a professional TV comedian and actor), not an interviewer by trade. As such, he is less inclined to be "overawed" by who Clapton is. In any case, he is a close personal friend of Clapton's. Of course he's going to jest with him...

The great Andy Fairweather-Low gets around, apart from playing with God [EC] - even at the Assange demo outside the London Home Office, with Roger Waters, a couple of years back. Long gone are the days I stood next to him, in wonder, in the Roundhouse Chalk Farm bar on a Sunday night in the mid-70's before the bands came on, after "Wide Eyed + Legless" hit the world, at a Bryn Haworth gig, i believe, which had Rabbit Bundrick on keys. You can tell a great musician by the albums he's played on - AFL's list must be endless.

A craftsman sees through the lens of craft. Eric and Glyn Johns are talking about recording techniques that aren’t rock(et) science, but that 95% of musicians wouldn’t be able to deliver live - or in a studio - because they can’t play well enough without effects or correction. This film is instructive on what musicianship and humility is. There’s not a single moment of arrogance. It’s a masterclass in raw talent and quiet self-assurance.

He is and has always been a blues player. Arguably he achieved his greatest fame with Cream, but was inevitably drawn back to the blues.

I did like the subtle dig about 'Layla' though, "I am a fan and you will listen to me." *laments the slow version* ... "No!" *Points finger accusingly* - Many fans have felt that way, Including myself, until I actually saw him do it live on an acoustic. That was special, just him and the guitar. That was brilliant. Not Whitehouse's biggest fan, but I thought this was a good interview. They are friends, or at least on friendly terms. I'm glad they didn't get another guitarist, it might have been a bit too much like 'hero worship' or got too geeky. Johns was fascinating too - this guy produced one of my other favourite albums 'Who's Next'. I'm glad he took no prisoners ;)

A brilliant get together. It was one of the most interesting chats have listened to in many a year, ....relaxed,. honest,.....and humorous, especially the last 30 seconds. The music sessions were superb, especially the last riff at the Albert Hall. Great job guys, thank you so much, it made my day.

Clapton's old now, but it's very interesting, because he' s survived with his head intact, and so he must have some memories and tales to tell... Never thought I'd find this as interesting as I did.

the 507 comments of love and respect before me have said it all. The way Eric and Glyn talk about the dark days of addiction without drama is such a powerful message. EC has taken ownership of that time and, most importantly, not forgotten it. And yes, he is still handsome.

Try playing spiral on Shazam and see what Song comes up I’m not gonna make it easy for you folks but it should be obvious to everybody. This song is a dead copy of Clapton’s never ending same riff for so many songs he Says our original. Starting for the one about his deceased child.

It's also funny to note that Clapton himself disliked his own voice (atleast in the early days) because it was rather high and he was a much bigger fan of those deep, raspy blues vocals.

I have thought exactly that for a long time. His guitar-playing is focused on so much that I don't think many people stop to think about what great voice he has. I'm so pleased to find somebody else who thinks so too.

Maybe that's why my hands were always broken out with eczema all through my youth and even all through most of my life...listening to too much Clapton, hahahahahaha!!! Really though, Eric, I kept playing in spite of it all...I was playing a show about a year ago and the lady who was the lead singer, in between songs, said to me "Robert, do you know your hand is bleeding" and I was like "yeah, I know". If I was quick on the wit, I should have told her "well, don't all your guitarists play until they bleed?" Hahahaha! God bless you, Eric! My favorite solo of yours when I was about 8 years old is what you did in Badge with George (got Best of Cream for Christmas). Anyway, hope you have a great day, man!

Eric is a class act. This is an in-depth look at the recording of "I Still Do" and the philosopy of Eric and Glyn Johns producer. Dirk Powell (banjo accordion mandolin) on this CD is a musical wonder. Decades ago, while traveling alone across the USA. I was invited by some very hospitable cajun musicians to a Thanksgiving gathering hosted by Dirk and then-wife Christine Balfa. As it happened I had Dirk's first (great) CD in my van. As a staid New Englander, though I begged off, didn't want to impose. I now wish I had gone. Ah well. :)

This is not the blues. It’s Eric Clapton personal chied progression he uses all the time and it’s really tiresome. Same as the song he wrote for his late son. If he reads this. Eric. You are a great player improviser but u r a one hit song writer. Why are stuck with the same chords to Lola etc? It’s incredible you are still stuck after all these years.

E.C. got me started playing guitar in 1967. He has always been an inspiration to me. One of the best days of my life was meeting him in 1986 on the island of Antigua at Pizzas of Paradise. He was nice enough to talk with me for about a half-hour. Shaking his hand was the spark in my guitar playing.

I love Eric Claptons music. U have for as long as I can remember. I first became aware of him with the Slowhand album. From there I backtracked all of his music. I then realized that the music I heard at the age of 8-9 years old coming from the basement of a church as a local rock band practiced was old Cream. Fell even more in love with Eric's music. I was hearing it and loved it but didn't know who it was. Still when I hear a Cream song I go back to those days in Brooklyn as a child. This interview was great! My respect for Eric grows every time I see or hear an interview with him. I Still Do is one of his best. Imho.
