Clapton has more than earned my respect, as a musician who’s devoted himself with sincerity to a succession of authentic American musical forms, including Delta and Chicago blues, Chuck Berry-style rock and roll, country, and JJ Cale-style rockabilly. He didn’t get stuck in a rut, or become a parody of himself. And he wisely went back to acoustic blues as an older man, when he perhaps had less intensity, but more character to draw on.

Honestly, dude is holding this show together! Playing tons of the parts that Clapton would usually do (not that Clapton isn't playing at about the highest level I've ever seen a full-on drunk play, and I mean that in a good way)... I guess it's all about propping up his rather soused boss. Some really tasty playing; what a band all around, really.

Yo be 21 again. 1977 ws a very good year to be alive. After, 461 Ocean Blvd years were extra laid back ones not unlike Greg Allmans album which along with these years I wore out on the turntable and on my home recorderd cassettes in my VW bug with surf racks scouring the point breaks and beach breaks of Santa Barbara County. Thank you for this lovely offering from England and country and people I dearly remember and love. P& L. Make England Great Again in 2024. Your culture is amazing.

I'll never be 21 again, but I got to hear him do this live just last year. It's crazy to think that this was filmed 47 years ago, because he sounds every bit as good today as he did then. Maybe, if I'm being honest, a little bit better. Drying out has been very good for him. I think being this good was very hard for him to deal with as a younger person. He seems to have aged into it nicely.

EC’s father was a 🇨🇦 soldier. I’m originally from Alberta & Eric's half brother used to live in Raincouver. This video, so far, (Alberta), foreshadowing the ‘78 performance I saw…Eric laying back, generously giving Terry the guitar spotlight. It’s really sad knowing bassist, Carl Radle, would die only a few years later, in 1980. Too bad The Core’s not included on this one, a personal favourite from the Slowhand album.

George Terry was from Miami, Fla. Producer Tom Dowd hooked him up with Clapton. Dowd ran Criteria Studios in Miami which was owned by Atlantic Records. It’s really weird how much he stopped playing guitar in the 70s. It was clearly a conscious decision. This show was almost structured to tease people. I guess he felt like he had to establish himself as a singer without playing guitar solos. But that makes no sense. Maybe the substances were the reason. Like it just killed his drive. He really did make a comeback as a player when he sobered up. His playing in the 80s and 90s was much better than this. But knowing how his life went, it all makes sense. The kind of pain he went through growing up, and drew him to the blues, wasn’t fixed by success. And things got bad. It is really a miracle that he lived through the 70s. But then things got better. It’s a story of redemption. And that’s how people should see him. The Crossroads Center is his biggest non-musical legacy.

It's not really weird. As you say he conciously decided to move away from being famous as a lead guitarist. His album, 461 Ocean Boulevard and the follow-up was the start of a more soulful, spiritual sound and he sang far more. It's his contemporary guitar heroes who tended to get stuck in a rut and play the same thing year in, year out, while Clapton was developing as a more soulful vocalist and songwriter. Most of those guitar names have disappeared or retired, while Clapton continued to write, perform and sell records. He made the right call.
@brianbard3410

He played just as much ,just different than the overdrive Freddie king of cream fame. He was tired of wanking ,he actually wanted to be a player in the band. But scratched that itch w, Delaney and the J.J. Cale, stuff.and lean Russell and Co. And he started appreciating the fender amps and strat sounds of rhythm and the Memphis sound.

He had given up heroin by this time (quit in '74). Instead he was well into the alcohol.

Muddy Waters was still opening for him as late as '79, too, at least in Chicago he was.

Does anyone know if Eric was using stock pickups in Blackie at this period in his career? I've always wondered and figured I'd ask here and surely someone would know.

Most likely the stock pickups from one of the batch of guitars he bought to butcher in order to build Blackie, probably a late 50's. It's pretty difficult to tell, given all the steps removed from pure ear (microphone to tape to vinyl/digital, not to mention amp and eq) but to me (take this with a grain of salt as some guy on the internet), they sound like they're from a 50's stock strat. They did not sound overwound like some of the ones on strats coming off the Fender line by the CBS years. The closest set one could readily buy would be the 57/62's or SD antiquities (the 50's sets).

I've been really happy with Fender Pure Vintage 59's for getting that clean Clapton tone. the above 2 recommendations are fine sets as well. @@tennesseeridgerunner5992

Yeah, stock pickups from one of the three Fifties strats he cobbled together to make Blackie.

That is Jaimee Oldaker on Drums. BTW Radle, Oldaker, Keltner, and Dick Simms, all came from Tulsa. Marcy also lived in Tulsa for a while. Clapton credits a Demo sent by Radle with these players (except Keltner) for drawing him out of seclusion.
