Stage 4 terminal prostate cancer here, just got the word today that all they can really do at this point is “make me comfortable “. Immediately went to this song. Reminds me of the time my sister was bitten by a moose… Cheers, everyone!
My wife just passed away from a lifelong battle with a complicated genetic disease (she was only 29). In accordance with her wishes, I played this at her celebration of life. She certainly got the last laugh, as it made us all bawl and laugh at the same time.
When I was at High School, a lad was give detention after the mock O level exam in Religous Education, because he answered the question what were Christ's last words on the cross, with, "Always look on the bright side of life..."
Fun fact: during the Falklands War, the surviving crews of HMS Sheffield and HMS Coventry sang this song while waiting for rescue after their ships had been sunk by the Argies.
@@philiphockenbury6563 Minus hanging from wood lol. Don't need that. But if it was to happen, hopefully I and my fellow condemed can remember this song :D.
I don’t ever talk about this, but since it’s the internet; this song has seriously gotten me through so many dark and depressing days through the years. So simple, yet never fails to make me grin (also it says cheer up Brian, and that’s my name so)
@@DrBrianAttler Make that another Brian! My father is dying and I immediately thought of this song. My father wasn't/isn't a Monthy Python fan but he would get the joke. ;-)
Another Bryan here.. Just wondering why so many of you never learned how to spell correctly? But then again I'm not too worried about it because on the bright side we're all still Bryan's in the end!
I'm torn between this and Metallica's The Thing That Should Not Be. If the latter, then it will be at the end, and my urn will have a bowl of water on top of the ashes, a sheet of plastic wrap covering the bowl, and a big chunk of dry ice and a wirelessly ignited match (surely those exist by now). Then my heir will activate the match during the twisted metal guitar solo, starting the dry ice reaction bubbling out of the urn while everyone watched on in horror...
This song started playing my head when I was diagnosed with stage 3 Follicular Non-hodgkins lymphoma..with chemotherapy starting in 2 weeks, I am going to be listening to this...Thank you Eric Idle for creating this song...words of wisdom with a comedic tone...makes me not so afraid. ❤❤
I read that Chapman was detoxing from alcohol up on the mountain when they were shooting the Holy Grail movie. It was visible on his face lol. Damn late 40s when he died AND I read he got sober after a while. Not a recipe for a long life
I feel you, this song helped me when I was in a bad part of my life. Time heals almost everything, and so do songs and jokes about life and death too ! :)
This song was played today, and was chosen by a dear neighbour, who passed only aged 54, as his coffin was being bought in. His personality shone through and bought many smiles and a giggle on the day we all had to say goodbye. So thankyou and your at peace now dear Jason ❤❤❤
"You came from nothing, you're going back to nothing, what've you lost? Nothing!" - not quite sure I agree with that, but yeah we are temporary beings and that's what makes life special and precious.
This song is one of the only thing that can truly make me feel better when my mind goes to thinking about how one day I will go back to being nothing. I am truly thankful for those words of wisdom.
"You come from nothing, you go back to nothing, what have you lost ? Nothing !" *Monthy Python*, teaching us life lessons, one burst of laughter at a time.
***** je sais pas pourquoi je vois jamais tes commentaires reponses... Mais ouais pareille huehuehue :3 Par contre j'ai une petite affection pour les pinot italien ~ j'hésite toujours entre ls deux !
+Yann G From nothing to nothing? That isn't a lesson, that's a faith-based belief. That "wtf" look Brian gives when he starts singing "always look on the bright side of life" whilst they're literally being crucified is pure comedy gold
Facial expressions can totally make a scene in comedies. Alpa Cino's facial expressions in Tropic Thunder totally make some scenes. His "wtf" when Kirk Lazarus starts his "For 400 years, that word..." speech is everything in that scene lol.
Guys, HERE is The Savior HalleluYAH translates “Praise ye YaH” YaH is The Heavenly Father YaH arrives via the TENT OF MEETING YaH was Who they Crucified for our sins ** NO FEMALE INVOLVED WHATSOEVER ** - Hebrew Book of Isaiah Isaiah 42:8 "I am YaH; that is my Name! I will not yield my glory to another or my praise to idols. Isaiah 43:11 I, I am YAH, and there is no other Savior but Me. Isaiah 45:5 I am YaH, and there is none else.
A few years ago I lost a really good friend. He was army, a firefighter and amazing father and husband. This was one of his favourite songs and movies. Last time I saw him as I was walking down the hospital hall I heard him start to whistle it, I joined in as I walked away. Miss him a lot but smile at the memories
Sent this to one of my best friends a few days before he passed. He laughed at it hysterically, told me it really helped cheer him up. This skit is timeless.
When I was a young teen here in the USA, my friend and I would sing this phrase in our church youth group after (Lutheran) church on Sunday. No one knew (or probably cared) what we were singing, as we did so in our best Cockney accent. It went something like this: "Laff's a pace a chit, wen u look ah ih." It would crack us up.
19 years old with stage 4 cancer. This song and others like it bring me so much happiness and really help to appreciate the great things in life. Honestly the cancer is a bit of a pain but in general I'm as happy as an Englishman with a cup of tea. Or me with a cup of tea. I really like my tea.
This scene is honestly utter brilliance, the idea of a man who is not Jesus, being crucified alongside other men for really no reason, only to sing and enjoy life in the end. The life of Brian isn’t just a life of Brian but a life for all of us
Jake Shatrau well Christianity was brought to Europe through Rome so that’s how it caught on, you twit. And that’s not even Jesus singing, Jesus wore a crown of thorns
My son promised me too play it at mine . Keeping up the family tradition of doing something happy at a funeral . I played 'We Went Dancing Across The USA 'by Lindsay Buckingham from National Lampoons Vacation at my little sisters wake in memory of all the family vacations we had fun driving my older sister nuts on and the time we watched the movie about 20 times in a row because it was one of the first VHS we ever had . Sabra I love and miss you so much .
To hell with Biggus Dickus; he's a liar, a cheat, and a scoundrel. Vote the Black Knight: he'll stand up to anyone or anything and win, and damn the physical harm (he's had worse).
My auntie passed away last year, at the funeral as her coffin was moving toward the hearse, this very song played, everyone was crying & smiling at the same time. A fitting tribute.
Just had a break up with my GF and I immediately came here to cheer myself up, thank you Graham, John, Terry G, Eric, Terry J, and Michael; we love you all
"Life's a piece of shit, when you look at it, Life's a laugh and death's a joke, it's true. You'll see it's all a show, Keep 'em laughing as you go, Just remember that the last laugh is on you." *Surprisingly uplifting words to live by.*
[Intro] Cheer up Brian, you know what they say? Some things in life are bad They can really make you mad Other things just make you swear and curse When you're chewing on life's gristle Don't grumble, give a whistle And this'll help things turn out for the best And... [Chorus] Always look on the bright side of life (Whistle) Always look on the light side of life (Whistle) [Verse 1] If life seems jolly rotten There's something you've forgotten And that's to laugh and smile and dance and sing When you're feeling in the dumps Don't be silly, chumps Just purse your lips and whistle - that's the thing And... [Chorus] Always look on the bright side of life (Whistle) (Come on!) Always look on the right side of life (Whistle) [Verse 2] For life is quite absurd And death's the final word You must always face the curtain with a bow Forget about your sin Give the audience a grin Enjoy it - it's your last chance anyhow [Chorus] So always look on the bright side of death (Whistle) A-Just before you draw your terminal breath (Whistle) [Verse 3] Life's a piece of shit (Oooh) When you look at it Life's a laugh and death's the joke, it's true (Oooh) You'll see it's all a show (Oooh) Keep 'em laughin' as you go Just remember that the last laugh is on you (Oooh) And... [Chorus] Always look on the bright side of life (Whistle) Always look on the right side of life (Whistle) (C'mon Brian, cheer up!) [Outro] Always look on the bright side of life (Whistle) Always look on the bright side of life (Whistle) (Worse things happen at sea, you know?) Always look on the bright side of life (Whistle) (What have you got to lose? You know, you come from nothing You're going back to nothing What have you lost? Nothing!) Always look on the bright side of life (Whistle) (Nothing will come from nothing You know what they say?) Always look on the bright side of life (Cheer up, ya old bugger C'mon, give us a grin! There y'are, see?) (Whistle) (It's the end of the film) (Incidentally, this record is available in the foyer) Always look on the bright side of life (Some of us got to live as well, you know?) (Whistle) (All right, that's the lot, let's get this place knocked down The whole show's dismantled in three weeks Who do you think pays for all this rubbish?) Always look on the bright side of life (They'll never make their money back, you know I told 'im, I said to 'im, "Bernie," I said, "they'll never make their money back.") (Whistle) Always look on the bright side of life
This was the closing theme for my Grandad's funeral in 2021. Not a day goes by that we don't think about him. Poor guy had ill health since a young age but we remember him as the light hearted and talented old man he was. R.I.P Grandad Alan 💙🙏
and ironically there are a bunch of *fortunate* people "blessed" with the gift of retardation and ignorance down in the comments, heck, some of these people are on rants about religions and hating the British (lmao what)
Best story I’ve ever heard about this song is that the crew of the HMS Sheffield, which was sunk by Argentina during the Falklands War, started singing this song while waiting to be rescued from their sinking vessel. 😆
“You came from nothing, you’re going back to nothing. What have you lost? Nothing!” This line really stuck me the first time I heard it. I mean, it’s so simple and obvious, but really had a profound change on how I view things. Thanks Eric!
You lost everything gained in many decades of living tho...it's like saying you lost nothing by not being payed for your work beacause you came to the workplace without anything
@@Retardedspecies no it's not.. only a dumb negative Nancy would say that.. try to look on the bright side of life instead of trying to sound smart.. pretty sure it'll work much better 🙂
My dad died yesterday afternoon...92. He was a HUGE Monty Python fan and us kids are too. (If you can call a 65 woman a kid!). I came here for you, dad. Xxx
Your dad was a huge monty python fan? I would have liked him. I've employed many monty python lines as I've been raising a couple young men. Watching the movies and show with them and they catch the lines and give me this look like, "really dad?" It's the best. I'm sure he was an amazing man, so sorry for your loss!
@@johnmclaughlin4886 Thank you so much for your kind words. He had the most infectious, uncontrollable laugh, ever, and we'd all know when he was watching. Really, thanks. This is the first time I've laughed since his death actually, remembering that. This is going to be played at his funeral.
but remember that the LORD died for all who did not have the bright side of LIFE - he gave his LIFE for those who must live in darkness and want to get out of it, if you believe in him ... and he rose again... so that you resurrect in him, even if you die, to have the Bright Side of LIFe with him for ETERNITY
The crew of a British battleship sang this while waiting to be rescued after their ship was sunk during the Falkland Islands war. Edit: It was the cruiser HMS Sheffield
I found this song at a very low point in my life. Not for me specifically, but for the ones I love. My mom was diagnosed with cancer, and then lost her job, which ended up going down a dark path to which she got addicted to meth and anything she could get her hands on. My brother was suffering from massive alcoholism. My dad and stepmom were on the verge of divorcing. Everyone I loved and cared for was going down a dark path. And when things seemed darkest, I would just play this song. I would stay in contact with everyone throughout the years. I was able to put my mom through a really good rehabilitation center. She's now 5 years sober and I've never seen her healthier and happier. My brother ended finding an amazing woman and is now 3 years sober. My dad and stepmom have gotten their dream careers and thier marriage has never seemed stronger. I know the message of this song is different, but what this song means to me is that when Life is feeling like shit...just look on the bright side of life.
Me and my friends stayed at a hotel and we got really shitty service. The bedsheets, pillowcase and blankets were in plastic bags on the beds, the room was missing a mini fridge and it wasn’t very clean. When we tried to call housekeeping to clean the room they said that they were very busy at the time bc it was peak time. We decided to clean it by ourselves and played this song while doing so. One of the best and funniest moments I’ve ever had with them. We could never stop cracking up because of the song 🤣🤣🤣
hey me too! whenever people are violent to me or back when I was a prisoner of the human traffickers who were raping me and repeatedly trying to murder me, I played this song ... they couldn't stand it so they set me free ...LOL and now I am alive rather than drawing my terminal breath ;) yay *whistles the song* I think they especially hated the part where he says "Always look on the bright side of death" because they wanted to be completely hopeless and miserable directly before I was murdered by them, but I refused, and they couldn't handle that I was ok and cheerful some of the time. I was definitely hopeless some of the time. Just not permanently like they hoped I'd be.
Been a fan since I was 13 or so. I was terribly abused in my early years. I found humor in this movie. I no longer take myself or anyone else too seriously.
That is very touching to hear. My best wishes to Syria and all Syrians from the UK. I hope you will see a new dawn for your country after all the terrible hardship and suffering.
This was my grandads funeral song, no one told me it was going to play... i genuinely didnt know whether to laugh or cry! 😂 i know my grandad was looking down laughing his head off ❤

This song has a huge impact on my life. Being a recovering alcoholic and suffering from terminal illness, and having hit the rock bottom, listening to this song gives me a window of time to smile and laugh and dance while appreciating the little time I have. May you all be happy throughout this short existence of yours.
@@gargarcomedy But how long was the ban? I assume it's since, been available in Ireland and other places, where it was initially banned. Interesting, as the Irish have a wonderful sense of humor.
You know, the hardest part to come up with is the ending, either its a movie, a book, a series. Its even harder when said movie/book/series is already a masterpiece. THIS is the perfect ending for the greatest comedy, and one of the best movies of all time. My father was a huge Python fan, when he died at 48, I played this song at the funeral, just before the end, exactly like he wanted. I was 21. 20 years later still makes me smile instead of crying when I remember him. Just like he always wanted to. And of course this is the song my family will play in my funeral too. Thank you Chapman/Jones/Gilliam/Idle/Palin/Cleese.
After some years i finally got the true meaning of the song to heart, the absurdity of everything in the world is really laughable and fretting over it is even more funnier. If you ever stopped to think "why" for something and it doesn't make sense and it seems like it never will, and you feel bad about it, just laugh. There's nothing more funnier than realizing it never really mattered. And eventually even thinking about it would be absurd on its own and make you laugh looking back that you ever even thought like that before. This song is about moving on and making peace with everything in your heart.
Actually, in Alcoholics Anonymous one of the things that is suggested is to write a graditude list whenever in a foul enough mood to want to drink. Listening to this song may or it could cause a relapse.
My grandfather died from complications from COVID on Christmas Eve. He said last year that he wanted this song played when he died. I didn't end up listening to it because I didn't want to think about a time without him. I forgot about it until a couple days after. A final gift from Papa Mark. This matches his personality so well. You'll be missed dearly.
So sorry bro actually my grandad died on chrismas 25 2010 (appenrently refusing to die before chrismas) anyway im sorry take this stranger condoléances (sorry i speak french so not the best english on RU-vid)
I lost my dad 4 days ago due to complications with his surgery to have a tumour removed. He always played this song to me and say the quote ‘you come from nothing and you go back to nothing...what have you lost. nothing’. I miss him so much but I’ll listen to this and smile. Love you daddy ❤️💔❤️
Louise xo lost my mother two weeks ago and she loved this song. It’s strange that watching it didn’t make me cry. More inspired to enjoy this life and take the curtain with a bow. Good day to you!!!
This song has literally got me through my entire life, I’ve been playing it since I was 10 and getting close to the big 5, so when you down do yourself a favour and look on the bright side of life
I love how in any movie a song about being positive would fit as an ending song. Meanwhile this movie just abruptly plays it as the main protagonist dies of crucifixion.
Yeah you could be drowning in the middle of the sea and ‘somebody’ walks past and ignores you. Jesus Christ, what a...wait, would Jesus Christ work? Jebus Rhist? Yeah that’ll work
