Eric Liddell, as played by actor Ian Charleson, reads a section from Isaiah, chapter 40, from the film Chariots of Fire (1981).
This video is intended as inspiration to those whose faith may at times waiver under the spiritual duress many Christians may experience during their lifetime. It is probably only of interest to Christians.
It is important to remember that those who are not Christians will judge Christ, unfairly or otherwise, based upon the behavior of His followers. All too often, as Christians we repel people from Christ because of our hypocrisy, selfishness, and overall lack of humility when dealing with others. Granted, the aforementioned human flaws are not unique to Christians by any means. However, others will be repelled from Christ if we hypocritically preach while simultaneously acting in a fashion counter to our proclaimed beliefs and rules.
As Christians we should keep in mind the following:
"...we either bring people nearer to Christ, or we repel them from Christ."
----Eric Liddell
Therefore, I would urge fellow Christians, myself included, when interacting in casual manner or within the realm of debate to act with charity and honesty.

One of my favorite passages of Scripture. One of my favorite movies. As a Christian, I never fail to find hope in Isaiah 40, especially when read in this scene.

A movie about honor, love of God and country, the pursuit of excellence, and unwavering faith in one's principles-----I don't think a movie like this could be made today.....

Every year when the Olympics come on, I would much rather watch this film. Strong, simple, not all of the modern flash. A sober reminder of life.

Poor, young Aubrey Montague... I always feel so badly for him when I watch this scene.. Such a tough young man, brought to tears and inconsolable.. It's in the scene after this one that Abrams call Montague his "most complete man".. Tough, strong, honest, and content, which Abrams have never known in his entire young life... Contentment.. This movie is so perfect..

He giveth power to the faint.&to them that have no strength he increaseth might.but they that wait upon the Lord shall renew their strength. They shall mount up with wings as eagles. They shall run and not be weary. They shall walk and not faint.

The section of sacred scripture that Ian Charleson reads has always been a personal favorite. The imagery only grants it even greater power in my opinion.

Behold, the nations are as a drop in the bucket and are counted as the small dust in the balance. All nations before him are as nothing. They are counted to him less than nothing.Vanity.He bringeth the princes to nothing. He maketh the judges of the earth as a vanity.Hast thou not known.Hast thou not heard.that the everlasting God,the Lord, the creator of the ends of the earth, fainteth not?Neither is weary.

I wish every world leader and every #politician could be made to listen and hear this powerful rendering of Isaiah from The Chariots of Fire... to teach them a sense of humbleness... Where, dear God, I sometimes ask, are the leaders.. the ones who are humble enough to praise with thanksgiving.. who don't seek perennial adoration....May this powerful verse, which I dearly cherish, serve as a lantern amidst today's troubled times.. to know that He is the ultimate strength and power.. Here's wishing blessings to all.

Humans, with extremely rare exceptions, cannot effectively wield political power without either becoming corrupt or entering politics because they are corrupt. For what kind of individuals does power attract? Those who seek ill-gotten gains and power over other individuals. Additionally, and in the case of the United States, with approximately $3 trillion confiscated by Washington DC is it any wonder that individuals who wish to live off of other individual's income become politicians?

Movie makers used to know how to create inspiration scenes without being trite and cliched. USED TO. This is truly an inspirational scene.

Henry Stallard won the bronze medal in this montage, see if you can spot it when the athlete from Finland is coasting to victory. BTW That athlete was Paavo Nurmi one of the best distance runners in human history who won both the 1500m and the 5000m in the space of an hour, there was no shame in losing to someone of that calibre.

I always felt so much pain for Aubrey in this scene.. It's no accident that the following scene is Abrahams getting rubbed down before the 100 meter final, and he tell Aubrey the he is the most complete man he has ever known.. God, I love this movie..

Misesian - We will never be perfect in this life. We will sin and fall short until we breath our last breath. The Flesh is always there to bring us down. That is why Salvation is not based on works but Faith.

I noticed a contrast in this scene (and true of the characters for the film). Harold Abrahams places poorly in a race in this scene and reacts defensively, taking the loss personally. Aubrey Montague is disappointed but doesn't seem to take it as hard as Harold. He is running his best, not using running as a weapon to prove his own value like Harold is doing.

the way the film communicates verse 30 (for those who know the text, and even perhaps to those who don't) is absolutely brilliant.

It was an interesting movie, where there did not seem to be a protagonist when I first saw it. But a rivalry between two, (Little, with something to prove, and Ben Cross's character, what's his name?), yet simultaneously, it was about a team effort (team England) to succeed. It was a movie about winning, but in an honest way. It is noteable because it was maybe the first movie to demonstrate to an audience how powerful, and integral to a movie, a soundtrack can be. A verse : Know ye not that they which run in a race run all, but one receiveth the prize? So run, that ye may obtain. - 1 Cor 9 : 24, kjv.

No wonder this movie won soo many Oscars back when. Because back then, to Liberal Hollywood, a movie about "running on a Sunday", was about pushing the envelope and upsetting the status quo.
