'The Real Chariots of Fire', from Silver River and post produced at Prime Focus, uncovers the true story behind the Oscar-winning movie Chariots of Fire which traced the story of Eric Liddell and Harold Abrahams, who both won gold medals at the 1924 Olympics in Paris. The hour-long documentary aired on ITV1 on Monday, 2nd July.
Actor Nigel Havers, who played Lord Andrew Lindsay in the film, follows in their footsteps as he travels to Cambridge, Edinburgh and Paris to meet their daughters and uncover rare archive material. Celebrity fans including Sir Trevor McDonald, David Baddiel and Olympic medalist Dame Kelly Holmes explain what the film means to them, and there are contributions from actors Ben Cross, who played Harold Abrahams. Producer David Puttnam and Director Hugh Hudson also reveal the lasting legacy of the story that won four Oscars at the 1982 Academy Awards.

I am of Scottish and Confederate descent. I was raised Methodist as a child and teen. However, I was not BORN AGAIN. The scene where Liddell preaches from Isaiah 40.31 stuck in my heart after I saw this film. 3 years later I was BORN AGAIN and sealed by the HOLY SPIRIT by the LORD'S grace alone (Ephesians 2.8.9). The Word of the LORD goes out from him, accomplishes HIS purposes and does not return to HIM void. (Note: all things happening today (2021) are happening because satan knows his time is short; Jesus' 2nd coming is very soon.) I look forward to seeing all of you saints (John 3.3, 33-34) when we get to the KINGdom.

As a young man in high school this movie was very moving and really motivated me as a track athlete. I was the first freshman to ever go to the state championship in 4 different events and by the time I was a senior I was a champion in the 300 hurdles. This movie was the inspiration I needed to work hard. I still remember it fondly now that I am in my 50s.

Thank you! I love this video and that you have chosen to talk about the real story. Eric Liddell was a friend of my family and his family had befriended mine in China many decades ago. When this movie came out we were all so excited to see it… I hope people will find renewed interest in the movie because the message is still as clear now as it was then… And even more timely perhaps. Eric did go back to China… And my family went also. My aunt and uncle spent decades building schools and hospitals before returning to Quebec to retire to the family home in Canadá. Eric and his family were very much a part of the community of real missionaries who were working to build infrastructure for China. We have pictures of my great aunt learning Chinese at the feet of a very old teacher. Eric was a great man and the message of his life’s work is in the movie so beautifully created.

I remember the first time I watched this movie as they were running on the beach I noticed all the runners looked like they were having a good time until I saw the look on Ben Cross's face which looked like he was struggling a bit. Now seeing this video and listening to Ben's comment about the beach scene cracks me up.

Harold Abrahams took the 100m and made it his "house". He lived in the distance of the short sprint. He had the look of someone with a chip on his shoulder -one with the drive to get his one goal accomplished.

Abrahams calling the Olympic 1500 meter race in 1936 reminds me of Al Michaels calling the U.S. hockey team's Miracle on Ice in 1980. It's a great story about great men; thanks for posting it for us Yanks.

I watched it in the early 80's while in the US Air Force. I was in my 20's now in my mid 60's it inspires me even more. It reminds me of my Trust and Hope in God , of jogging barefoot on the beach...very close to home. Watch it and let it inspire you if you have not. Do yourself a favor.

The movie was powerful in its telling of these two competitors and their individual as well as shared contexts. I come away with inspiration for the faith that drive Liddel and the passion that fueled Abrahams. Very grateful for this piece which gave deeper insight to who these these men were in real life and how they impacted their world and times and continue to do so today.

Today the 6th of August 2021 it has been 9 years exactly that this documentary was released on RU-vid. Due to the Tokyo Olympic games, specially watching the track and field competitions, I remembered seeing, watching this amazing movie, "Chariots of Fire". I did not understand the drama back then ( on cassette VHS 1983-1985 ) , but the music stayed with me and surprisingly still does brings me lots of nostalgia. English is my second Language. Thank you for reading my this.

Guys like Liddlle, Abrahams, Paddock were amazing. In 1921 Paddock ran the 100 meter in 10.4. Just 0.8 of a second behind Usain Bolt's current world record. Paddocks record was done using the training of 90+ years ago and running on a track of sand and clay with leather cleats. I wonder what these gentlemen could have done running on a modern track with modern equipment with modern training?

Having been a victim of racism and the religious majority myself, Harold was my hero. He stood up to the establishment and anti-semitism and thumbed his nose at them. The need to prove myself a better man, physically, mentally and spiritually, than my tormentors, had driven me my whole life. Great movie and excellent documentary.

I consider each of those to be better than "The Final Race." "God's Joyful Runner" was actually written by Russell W. Ramsey and was endorsed by Eric's sister, Jenny, in the 1980s. Eric's daughter, Patricia, wrote the Foreword. I also like "Pure Gold" and I am enjoying reading Eric Liddell's own manuscript on Discipleship.

I weep every time I see any programme about Eric Liddell. A man of high principle and integrity. What am I prepared to give up for what I believe in! About ten years ago, I was in China. Turned the tele on and there was a programme about Eric Liddell. Though it was in Chinese, I watched and enjoyed to the end. Thank you for this documentary. Brings the whole story alive again.

It's a lovely documentary good old Nigel Havers. Eric Liddell is a hero of mine even since i first saw Chariots (i rented in on vhs as a child in the late 1990s from my local library in Loughborough if memory serves!) Also i have a small connection to Eric Liddell, my Grandfather knew Eric and had a strong friendship with him. -They shared rooms together during Edinburgh University according to my grandfather's diaries (which my mum has) and i'm almost certain it was Eric that led my Grandad to Christ during Edinburgh. He became a minister later himself and led a church in Montrose, Scotland with his wife and my grandmother Sybil Donald Sadly he died in 1991 a year or so before a was born i would give anything to know from him more of what Eric was like in person.

@@theresamahfouz790 You may enjoy this story: I was upset with God's plan. I had to leave Tokyo for the U.S. to go to college when Billy Graham was coming to Tokyo for a crusade. I knew my unsaved father would not go to the crusade if I was not in Tokyo to take him. I was quite troubled. Later when I asked my father if he went to the crusade, he said "no". God had a better plan. Due to the nature of my father's job, he personally gave Billy Graham a tour of the American Embassy in Tokyo!

The "real story" behind Chariots of Fire should include the real reason why Cambridge was so uneasy when Abrahams in his desperation after he was thrashed by Eric Liddell in 1923 employed Sam Mussabini, a notorious coach infamous for his use of drugs in both cycling and athletics. In the film one sees Mussabini being "warned off" my the president of Scottish AAA (this actually happened) and the master of his college was clearly concerned that Abrahams would tarnish the reputation of the university.

I was captivated by this story and, as a Vangelis fan, the music. The mood, the classic English cheer (and of course the Scottish cheer too), the determinism, and the gentlemanly atmosphere that was abundant. Not bad for a devout gender egalitarian like me (long story!). So what about this very gentlemanly British (as born that is!) Harold Maurice Abrahams? What was he all about? Where did he come from? Where was he educated? What?! Bedford School?! Yes, though at different times of course, the same school as my stepdad that I looked up to, and still do! Brilliant!

journeymen2008 Is that your way of saying that you feel you fall short? I think we all do. Probably Eric Liddell probably felt that he did. I think his success is in the way he viewed God as a loving creator who expressed joy in seeing His creation do simple things like running. He was literally in love with God.

The bronze medalist in this event was New Zealander Arthur Porritt (1900-1994). He was too modest to be named in the movie, but his son has recently (April 2024) revealed that after the movie became a smash hit, he regretted the decision. He was an all around achiever, as a Rhodes Scholar and as a surgeon to the Royal family. To this day, he is the only New Zealander to have won an Olympic medal in a sprint.

After watching this film in 1989 at 17 I gave my life to God becoming a born again Christian. It remains my favourite film to this day. x

Faith, hope and creativity are much more important to me than principles. And I love the Last of the mohicans too. I don't know what i did after watching it.

Many thanks for this great documentary. I am Italian, former runner.I saw " Chariots of fire " the first time in 1982. Please ,would you mind putting English subtitles ? I don't understand completly what they say . Thank you.

Fun fact: Kelly Holmes, seen here, was the first British Olympian to take both middle distance golds- 800m and 1,500m- since Albert Hill in 1920. Hill was coached by Sam Mussabini.

That was beautiful Chariots of Fire was a wonderful film while it was about two sprinters it certainly inspired many many distance runners of all abilities including myself. Also great memory of meeting a Liverpool guy wearing a British polo shirt at the 1984 Manx Easter Festival who told me he had been an extra in the film. Mike in the west of Ireland. !!!!
