This short film is a tribute to Eric Peterson, one of Canada’s most accomplished actors. In a career spanning over 4 decades he has portrayed a broad range of memorable characters, from a World War I flying ace in Billy Bishop Goes to War to left-wing lawyer Leon Robinovitch in Street Legal (CBC TV) and the irascible Oscar Leroy in Corner Gas (CTV). Having secured a place in the nation’s cultural treasure trove, Peterson decides to express gratitude to the Canadians who prize his talents-and sets out, on foot, to thank every single one of them…
This film was produced by the NFB in co-operation with the National Arts Centre and the Governor General's Performing Arts Awards Foundation on the occasion of the 2013 Governor General's Performing Arts Awards.
Directed by Kevin McMahon - 2013 | 7 min

I can honestly say that Eric Peterson is one of my favorite actors of all time......the man is brilliant. I seriously agree that he HAD to take the part as Oscar Leroy....what a perfect man for that character.

I recently discovered Corner Gas, and Oscar is definitely my favorite character. Of course the show is goofy and off-the-wall (with conceptual wordplay/gags similar to "Green Acres"), but there is a core of truth in Oscar that perfectly captures a certain type of flinty, small-town Plains/Prairies man of that generation. The fact that he can play such a convincing grump, when he is obviously a really friendly, down-to-earth guy, is a real tribute to his ability. Thanks for this video.

Among other things, two absolutely brilliant versions of "Billy Bishop Goes To War". Defines Canadian theatre. Thanks Eric!

Oscar! I mean....Eric Peterson, I LOVE YOU! You made me laugh so much on Corner Gas. My father and my grandfather are very stern and unemotional type of fellows, and you being Oscar made me live vicariously of having a father as comedic as you. I would've been FLOORED if you came up to me on the street, I would recognise you in a hearbeat.

Oh, my GAWD! That was absolutely fantastic. I’m watching you right now, Eric. I’ve been binging Corner Gas for the last month. Oscar is most definitely my favorite character. You heard me, Jackass! Greetings from Logsden, Oregon!

I've been saying for awhile that Canadians have no media representation unless they're in American films claiming "dual"citizenship or down right admitting to it being "their old home". Reynolds, Rogan, Gosling or Shatner for example. I honestly don't have much "Canadian patriotism" that isn't just drummed up on the spot.

They have better media representation now that the internet lets them bypass the gatekeepers. E.g., I'd say Jordan Peterson is extremely prominent, and there is a slew of other important Canadians whose words matter. Overall, it is in a better situation than e.g. Australia. Canadian universities are quite famous, so are Canadian games, everyone knows a few Canadian musicians in various genres, etc. As a non-US foreigner, I can say that strictly Canadian issues are not very interesting internationally because they lack both the weighty history of Europe and the contemporary intensity of the US. Even something relatively dramatic like Quebec separatism doesn't quite capture the imagination, though the historical Anglo-French confrontation is probably the most interesting Canadian issue (First Nations are just a copy of the same stuff in the US). Canada would also benefit from stressing its major urban centres like Montreal or Toronto a bit more instead of the exaggerated interest in the frontier. That is not to say that Canada is somehow unusually uninteresting. If you take 'Californian' local writers or 'Texan' actors, nobody except the locals would pay much attention to them. They only start to matter when they represent the continent. Likewise, Canada truly shines when it addresses the Western world as a whole, not just Canada. Its orientation isn't really "USian", but "North American".

@Humanophage , I think if Canada were in Europe it would be much more interesting. Probably not Greece, Spain, or Italy interesting but somewhere between Germany and Norway.

When I catch myself thinking Oscar is such a Jackass is also when I realize how well he portrayed the role so perfectly. Like when I do the same with Margret, Charles and Frank on M*A*S*H. It's easy to see them as real people. BRAVO
