Eriks RU-vid channel is criminally undersubscribed so give him a follow for more incredible inspiration starting with this video of how he climbs stairs: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-eRgiz2a3Njs.html&ab_channel=ErikKondo

This is so true! As one of those people with an SCI that is walking again, 1) the SCI doesn’t go away just because you walk - there will still be issues and disability. It’s not like pre-injury! And 2) my PT said to me if something is going to come back, it will come back with or without physio. I see all these posts saying you need to do 3 hours PT a day to recover. We got 3 hour a week in my rehab centre. It’s largely luck, not hard work, as to whether your nerves are damaged or not. If you’re lucky enough to get a spot in a rehab centre (only 1/3 of us get this in UK!), please make the most of wheelchair skills classes as these are priceless even if you get to walk again. So many people never bothered and yet these skills are essential to making the most of life with a SCI.

That’s really wonderful feedback and I hope this comment is helpful to someone who reads it. I’m glad you enjoyed this clip and the full episode is full of so much more great info. Erik has a truly fascinating mind and it’s left me with more questions than answers!

I don't have a spinal injury but have a neurological disease that means I use a power wheelchair to be a Mum and Wife that's not bed bound. The amount of times I've been told by professionals that me using a wheelchair is giving up on rehab and recovery. I'm like, I don't want to waste my kids life, fighting for recovery. Life is happening now and I need to mobilise to be part of my family. Great video, thanks ❤

I used drugs and alcohol coping after breaking my neck surfing, finding purpose and interests are critical........ but for some people it takes years to find an interest and purpose due to how we are all wired differently, Dopamine plays a huge role in finding our purpose

wow what an interesting and informative talk ...you know i look after newly injured SCI patients and i am always searching for the right things to say to difficult patients your podcast gets handed around a lot and i would love to show this to a couple of young guys i am looking after whose whole goal is to walk again ..they won't too much damage for a miracle cure.....but i wonder if they are ready for this slap in your face reality?????? maybe it will stop years of heartbreaking therapy????also the money factor if only there was a way to jump into acceptance straight away !!!!

There definitely is a way to jump into acceptance right away. I was told I would never walk again and I accepted it immediately and my goal was to be as independent as possible in a wheelchair. 4 months later I walked out of rehab on my own two feet having got the “miracle” recovery so if it’s possible to walk again, it will happen even if you accept that you won’t. It’s so true that it doesn’t really matter how much rehab you do (ours was limited to 3 hours per week) - it’s luck, not hard work as to whether mobility returns, and if mine hadn’t, I had worked hard on becoming independent in my chair so I was prepared for it.

I would never discourage anyone from trying 100% to get as much as possible, but after a while you have to move on, and being upright doesn’t guarantee a great life. Living in denial, pining for the past will always suck. Erik is one of the best role models you could ask for, you should tell your patients to check out his RU-vid channel!
