Ernest Roulette Episode 4 | Ernest Goes To Jail 

I used to work for John Cherry. He used to come by my cube and say "You wanna go to lunch? I'll tell you some Ernest stories." He's such a nice guy and he loves to talk Ernest with his fans. One of the stories was when they were filming the courtroom scene, John couldn't be in the courtroom during the pen gag, because he was laughing too hard. He only got to see it after filming, and he hated that he couldn't have been there to see it in person.

One of my favorite pastimes as a kid was getting together with friends and brain-storming Ernest titles (the more absurd and heinous the better). Some highlights include: "Ernest Bites Down", "Ernest Eggs it On", "Ernest Botches a Eulogy", "Ernest Pleads Insanity", and, my personal favorite, "Vernest: Son of Ernest".

I think my heart broke in half they way Ernest said he didn't want to die.

about the poster. i've been studying poster illustrations for awhile, reading old illustration books from the 80's and stuff, and it appears to be a mix of a collage and drawing. ernest appears to be a photo, black and white and then colorized (possibly with paint or a xeroxed photo with the reds toned down) the ground is a photo of a hole, maybe a few holes, but some of the holes are definitely added in (probably xeroxed and pasted on). the legs are a photo, but looks to be maybe outlined with a marker on the right leg. the wall is a composite of a few different photos of a wall. the sky is airbrushed. the barb wires are either paint or color pencil. the tower and lights are airbrushed. and the guards inside are drawn or painted.

ernest's speech he makes when he's facing execution actually kinda makes me cry now knowing he's gone.

I know absolutely nothing about these Ernest movies, but it's always so entertaining to watch these videos.

Nice work on another thought-provoking discussion of the Ernest canon. While I don't agree that “Goes to Jail” is the best movie with Ernest in it, calling this the most “Ernest-y” film-no distractions from mining tycoons, Santa, trolls, etc.-is pretty accurate. (And thanks again for the "Ernest Goes to Podcast" shout-out.)

I've never seen an Ernest film but I'm captivated by this show.

I actually disagree with the comment about the best line being "he's gettin' away!". I think my favorite line is when Ernest goes back to his house for the first time after escaping prison, and he sees all of the velvet bedspreads and zebra carpets and playboy shit, and says "I've been vandalized! Be ELVIS!" But seriously, I really appreciate these videos. These movies are actually really underrated. I was born in '91. I grew up watching these movies because my mom loves them. We watch Ernest Saves Christmas pretty much every year. Ernest Goes to Jail was always my favorite though. It's the one I watched over and over as a kid. It's crazy that I've found a whole youtube series about long-form reviews of Ernest movies. The internet is amazing.

In addition to the alternate ending, the TV cut also included a few extra escape attempts (some clips of which show up in the end credits, despite the gags being cut from the film itself). Essentially, this was to bring the runtime of the movie closer to 90 minutes, to fit a two-hour timeslot.

The Empire Strikes Back of Ernest films. Just the best. Varney is excellent. Chuck and Barry are sublime. Varney's Nash is completely distinct from Ernest. Never gets old and it's a riot. Love this film soooooooooooo much.

Haha. Nothing explained the appeal of Ernest to me better than the sentence 'Raising Arizona is a good version of Ernest movie'.

Fun fact: Jim Varney LOVED candy and said you couldn't reach your hand out in any part of his home and and it not land in a candy dish.

The guy playing Ruben actually did a one-man show where he played Martin Luther King Jr. with all his famous sermons/speeches, and he performed at my college campus one year during Chapel (sadly I was too nervous to approach and ask my NEED TO KNOW question; what was it like working with Jim Varney?)

I have been looking for that scene where earnest doesn't die to the electric chair for years. I had no idea it was from this movie but I remember catching on TV when I was 5 and it scared me so bad I had to turn it off and I couldn't sleep. I remember it being almost exactly the same as it is except Ernest being a vampire and the movie being in black and white for whatever reason.

Tony Stark in Avengers got all his moves from Ernest.

I hadn’t seen this movie in maybe 30 years. Rewatched it with my kid last night and I absolutely *laughed my ass off* at the soap gun gag. That was the highlight for me.

And later in Rides Again, she mentions to a goon "You're just like my son, Jaime. I had to teach him manors. He's dead now." So, it was her OTHER son that she had to bring to jail.

I remember not wanting to see Goes to Jail as a kid for some reason. I guess the title alone scared me. But I ended up loving it.

I loved this movie as a kid, but I notice all kinds of little things as a grown-up. Case in point, while I preferred the diagetic Multiple Personalities in Scared Stupid over the short successions of impressions Ernest did as he attempted to impersonate Nash, I was so freaking impressed with the SPOT-ON impression of Humphrey Bogart. I could watch a whole movie of him doing that. . . . were he still with us. RIP Jim Varney.

I remember seeing Camp all the way to Ernest Rides Again at the movie theaters growing up

I can't wait for the episode where they spin a movie they've already talked about and just spend another hour rehashing their opinions. Eventually there's one movie left but they just can't get the wheel to hit it, so the podcast keeps going for 40+ episodes that are just them exhausted, trying to find anything new to say about their fifth viewing of Ernest Scared Stupid.

Came home from work to realise, not only do I not have class because of the holiday, but there's a new Ernest Roulette as well! Splendid!

A funny thing about the pen scene for me is that I did the same thing in middle school once. It wasn't as messy but I took in a bunch of ink and was too embarrassed to point it out and sat in class with a mouth full of it.

The warden in this movie is pretty clearly based on the warden in Runaway Train, who also commands total authority even outside his prison. Runaway Train was directed by the same guy who did Tango and Cash. Seems like John Cherry has a pretty specific list of influences.

Here's an idea for how to do the rankings for future episodes, since all 3 of you seem to have different ideas. Each person keeps their own list, and each movie gets a point based on the position (on a list of 4 movies, 4 points to the top, 1 point to the bottom). At the end you add up the scores of each movie, so the movie with the most points is the best, and the least is the worst.

I'm sure it's been said by you guys, by other people watching, and by myself, too, in the chat - but, I sincerely wish Jim Varney and Sam Raimi got to work together at some point. Like, it's an absolute dream to have an Ernest starred "Evil Dead," where Ernest is just making faces at the demons and being all witty and shit.

With Ernest's house being littered with Rube Goldberg machines, and having a small dog, it's hard not to think of the breakfast scene in Pee-wee's Big Adventure (1985). Obviously, Ernest goes to Jail ages better.
