I will freely admit that I know little of Maroon 5 or James Valentine, their obvious success notwithstanding, but boy oh boy, Mr Valentine sure possesses some great guitar designing skills!
The Valentine signature model is a kind of hybrid of 335, Telecaster and the inimitable qualities of classic Music Man guitars which, in my opinion, are the best production guitars made today. Tele twang, 335 warmth, most sounds in-between, combined with the ergonomics, superior handling and build quality only seen on Music Man guitars make the Valentine a very handy instrument indeed. In fact, I wish I didn't have to give it back!
Also, something I didn't note in the video but perhaps should have, are the internal trimpots for the boost and the neck pickup tap. You can get in there and set levels for both the boost and then coil tap. Super cool!
Today's tools:

EB-MM is killing it these days. Sooo many great guitars in their lineup, but I really like this & the St. Vincent. Great demos on both sir!

That “ambient stuff” you play at the end is especially beautiful man!! I had no idea it could make those sounds. Definitely gonna try to emulate that sound! 😆 Thank you!

That boost really kicks the crap out of the front end of the amp.

You just need to keep an eye on the 9v battery - wonder how long it lasts if used regularly.

Finally someone demonstrates the lack of neck dive on this instrument. The balance. No one else did/does. Now we know that it has neither body dive or neck dive. Crucial for me. Now I wonder one thing, which may be the deal maker or breaker. 1. Since they have encapsulated one single coil, with slant, inside a humbucking case, it should be possible to turn that one completely around, to get a reverse slant. Like, that the pole piece of the low E-string is closer to the bridge, and the pole piece for the high E-string, is a bit further away. On other guitars, teles, strats that I've seen this, this works better, to tame the ice-pick piercing high treble when playing the high e-string high up on the neck... Is this possible without jinxing the electronics, polarity, phase, of this pickup? I mean, used alone, it may be a no-brainer, but used together with the other pickup, will may/or may not induce some nort/south/phase artifacts.... if this isn't possible, what's the point of it all then? I see absolutely no use if this wouldn't be possible...at all really.

Does the boost do anything to the tone??? Doesn't seem to in the vid.
@BrettKingman
@BrettKingman 7 лет назад
Yep. Depends on what it's seeing amp-wise. Also, there are trim pots inside to tame or gun it. For me, I'm not into it that much. But I can understand where it would word for people using, say, a Bassman or similar amp. It's too hard to demo on RU-vid because the viewer is wide and varied just like its respective amp tastes. But it works! Oh, yes.

Hi mister Kingman, is it possible to adjust the boost? The boost is way to loud for me. 6db will be enough. Thank you ! Jean Smet from Antwerp Belgium.

I could not hear a difference between the neck split or humbucker. I have a Valentine with the same issue.

Thanks for a great review. (As always) What about the hum I single coil mode. I noticed that it was quite much if you compare to AL or Cutlass model with silent circuit on board. What do you think? Is it a problem? Thanks!

Yes! I'm getting mine in 30 days. Such a sick guitar. I'm going Trans Buttermilk. This guitar is so ridiculously good and flies under the radar. The music man stuff is like custom shop material.

Wow... I was trying to call SW this morning to see if they had any coming. On the site they said they don't know when they're gonna get it. I feel dumb because I passed on the $1750 (or $1610 after points) deal they had on Musicianfriend several weeks ago.

Great demo (as are all of your demos). Getting ready to drop some higher dollars on a guitar in the coming months, and I've been racking my brain trying to figure out which Tele to buy. Then I see the Valentine-this is PEAK TELE. Question-are you using the stock 11's in this vid, or did you string it up with 10's?
@henkehakansson2004

One might wonder (as said down below) the hum got louder as you boosted it on the SC pikcups, if this wouldn't be mitigated with a system like Ilitch hum cancelling system? Should be "under" or built into the pickguard. I got it in one of my strats with vintage pickups and you can play high gain without hum, even metal...fwiw.

Fantastic review as always!!! 👍🙏I’m a strat player. Now I’m thinking of getting another axe next to my Strats with higher output for playing some classic rock stuff but being versatile at the same time. There is a Valentine with trem and a Luke III for sale. I really like the appearance and the tonal options of the Valentine better, however, I’m afraid that the single coil bridge would not satisfy my needs. I really don't know. Should I go for the Luke III or you think that the Valentine can produce enough gain and output for playing classic rock (not metal).?

Excellent demo as always, Brett. Thanks. Quick Q about the neck, please... you said it was the classic Ernie Ball neck - would you say that is a C shape or D shape? Or sth else?

Well if that isn't the only guitar I'd ever need. Now, Is someone interested in buying an arm and a leg from me?
@henkehakansson2004

Is the "ashtray" over the bridge de-tachable? Can you remove it ? I think you should in order when maintenance comes around but one can't be sure. Rather would not have it. Such things are suspectible to "ringing" and resonating. Maybe contributing to "twang" and so on...but... anyway...

Except for a tele, shouldn't it be a crime somehow to not have a humbucker in the bridge position? I bought a Godin with that 'flaw' and in the end I do like it, but c'mon... what's the number one mod you see on a tele? Isn't it putting a humbucker in the bridge? Oh, and since you're "Down Under" does the 'rear' pickup mean the neck or the bridge? Guffaw... I'm so funny.. not. ;-) Great demo as always! I think the switching hoopla is too much for my tiny brain, but I do like the guitar.. especially that neck which is gorgeous! Keep rockin amigo!!
@JELIFISH19
@JELIFISH19 7 лет назад
The Tele bridge humbucker isn't the most popular mod for Teles. It's not popular at all. The Tele bridge pickups is the most used pickup on Teles. You see way more people putting in humbuckers or minis in the neck. And the rear pickup is the bridge.
@3dsman
@3dsman 7 лет назад
Yes, I understand that... my point is I prefer HSS layouts.. or HS at least... with the H being Humbucking in the bridge position. Charvel, Hamer, Jackson, and many others use this layout most often and I'm just not a fan of a single coil in the bridge... unless it's a Tele.
@3dsman
@3dsman 7 лет назад
Meh, I've seen plenty of Tele's with a humbucker mod.. not that I agree with doing that... a Tele's a Tele after all. Think of it this way... how many strats or strat knock-offs have you seen with HSS layout?
