I had the good fortune of see Erroll Garner perform at the Kennedy Center. For me, it ranks as one of the best performance and show of all time. It was amazing. Standing ovations after standing ovations. His encore performance was at least 45 minutes long. I was glad when it was over because I couldn't clap anymore or whistle or hoot. I was exhausted; my hands were sore and tired. We really got our monies worth. I think my ticket was $4. He was the BEST!

saw him in concert in Central Park, NYC around 1975. Was probably the best concert I've ever been to. Tickets were $1 !! His quartet opened for The Buddy Rich Big Band, and was much more enjoyable than B R's band.

Mr. Garner's music and special talent emanates from his heart and soul. It seems so obvious.

I heard Errol's four piece combo play at Pall's Mall in Boston in 72. My new bride and I were given a small round bar table that almost touched the low end of the piano. I could have reached over and hit low A at any time during the performance. I was in seventh heaven. Also, the band had a conga player that lifted the entire group to another level. I never imaged that a conga player could add so much to a small combo.

They went to the same high school, and EG was a few years older and was AJ's main inspiration.

He was didactic, and could polyrhythm on top of polyrhythm separately in both hands, imagine playing two songs on either hand simultaneously then switching hands on the fly and changing the tempo gradually on both hands speeding one up and slowing other down.. And more

Nicely put, especially for someone who, like me, doesn't play the piano, or, for that matter, any other musical instrument at all, and as a result does not understand how the discipline of music work. Thank you for your description on how this marvellous musician would use his own technic to produce so beautiful notes.

One of my "desert island" picks for jazz piano.... what a genius this man was! Concerning his inability to read music, many of the all-time jazz greats read notation poorly if at all. Among them were such giants as Duke Ellington (who could not sight-read), Dave Brubeck.... and a man whose artistry bore much in common with Garner - Wes Montgomery. The giants of modern jazz rarely appear on stage with a score; the ability to memorize and interpret music is much more highly-prized than reading.
