Great documentary about Erroll Garner through the lense of his bassist Ernest McCarty.
This is one of the first pianists I've heard when I stumbled upon some jazz LPs when I was a kid.
It's amazing how modern these musicians sound still today.

This is the first time I’ve heard a musician acknowledge that Erroll Garner was only a whole new level, higher plane than even Art Tatum or Oscar Peterson.

Erroll Garner is and was, to me, probably the most appealing musician I know of regardless of the era, styles or even the instrument. He was beyond mastering his instrument, beyond being one with it. He is the greatest improvisor I know of but more importantly than anything else, he makes me FEEL happy within the first few seconds of hearing him play. If it's a ballad, it usually makes me cry and his touch.....my God! His harmonic concepts and chord voicings are out of this world. I can see why Ernest McCarty was affected very deeply from playing with and being around such an incredible genius and such a powerful force of Swing and of Love. You can tell he is ecstatic when he's playing and there is so much love for the art of music - you can see it on his face every single time he played. Erroll Garner was musical happiness!!!!

When Ernest McCarty discusses the idea Erroll Garner is able to improvise on improvisation, you will notice that everything he does is improvisation, which is constantly changing within his music conceptualization. Most musicians will play a similar area when it comes back around again in a similar fashion, but he's constantly improvising upon his previous improvisation, which is magnificent. There is no other pianist that plays an improvisational introduction to almost every piece. These introductions are themselves, magnificent original masterpieces! Absolutely no other Musician has Is this talent or ability. His Musicality and voicing of chords as well as his genius are unsurpassed.

Erroll was extremely popular in The Netherlands at the time; my parents went to all his concerts and his LP's were in constant rotation at home; I remember my brother put one on auto repeat while studying for his PhD ...

Thank you SO much for posting this, Alex! I just can’t stop watching it. Will share it all over the place, too. ❤️. Ernest McCarty is so beautifully articulate, too! AND funny … - Ahhhhh … Erroll Garner … A phenomenon like Shakespeare, Beethoven, Debussy … such a gift to the world …. - I guess I’ll be quiet now, but… ahhhhhh …. - THANK YOU, ERROLL! 🙏🏼✌🏽👊🏽 ♥️ 🦋 🌲 🌊 ☀️

I feel the same !! Ernest is so intelligent and a performative speaker. When he discusses how modern lifestyle mashes the spiritual entity within and drinking is used as a distraction... so many thruths! So honest, when he said he's not as good as he could be. I will always come back to this.

so happy I happened upon this interview, Eugene McCarty so eloquently expressed what I feel about Errol Garner and his music, and like so many of his devotees, he just makes me happy, and grateful to the Creator who gave us such a marvelous gift.

So true what Ernest McCarty said about the personal life of pro musicians, especially when they are gifted musicians, like Garner. Often that's all they know in life is their music.

Erroll was Autistic at a time when the condition was not recognised. He had Savant piano playing skills. Glenn Gould and David Helfgott (remember the movie "Shine") also had Autism.
