Ersatz Yorck-class - The Last Imperial German Battlecruisers

First, I'll apologize for my voice. Feeling under the weather.
That aside, today's video will look at the Ersatz Yorck-class battlecruiser. While that name is technically a placeholder, as it literally means 'Replacement' or 'Substitute' Yorck, none of these ships ever got formal names. They were cancelled well before that could be done.
Nonetheless, as the last design of Imperial German battlecruiser to be laid down, these are interesting ships. Fundamentally a modification of the preceding Mackensen design, but with some interesting quirks all their own.

Since I know not everyone reads the description: I apologize if my voice cracks, fades, or otherwise sounds off here and there. Not feeling great and my voice suffered for it.

With Gneisenau pronounciation, it's a very fast soft 'g' (there are examples of pronounciation on youtube :) )

The plan views show a remarkable similarity to the layout of HMS Tiger and the Japanese Kongo class ships. They represent a major improvement over the previous battlecruisers like the British Invincibles and Lion class ships. The main guns have much better useful arcs of fire and the clumsy, questionable wing turrets are no more. They look like a thoughtful design, and had the war not started until 1918 or so, they would have probably given the British a lot of headaches. Very close to a true fast battleship, and clearly ahead their time. Thanks for another great presentation!

Just found your channel and subscribed immediately, very interesting video! One thing Drach told us recently was that British intelligence during the war thought Hindenburg and the first 2 Mackensens were a new class of battlecruisers armed with (somewhat weird) 386mm guns and capable of 30 knots. I also found a "silhouette paper" that illustrates Hindenburg as much meatier than Derfflinger (mostly due to a higher freeboard). Very interesting in principle, but such a ship would probably require a tonnage similar to Hood.
@NashmanNash
@NashmanNash Год назад
Once im finished with my proper Hindenburg model,i will probably start to do the idea that came during her design and financial time to reduce her armor and give her 35cm guns...Not that that would´ve been a better Idea from the beginning for the entire Derfflinger class. Take Design IVe for Seydlitz(5x28cm twins all centerline) and build the Derfflingers with a bit less armor,but heavier guns^^...But well,von Tirpitz was around

It's good that you pronounced the G in Gneisenau, since German doesn't have silent letters.

The term Panzerkreuzer for armoured cruisers or Battle Cruisers persisted in Germany in the press and among the general public until the end of the First World War. But it was never used from the imperial Navy itself. The correct naval term in German was Grosser Kreuzer, indeed .

You should do a video on the HMS Erebus and Terror in the shallow Arctic waters. They are some of the best preserved shipwrecks and they sank all the way back in the 1850’s.

@@ploppysonofploppy6066 No, the G is fully pronounced. Apart from this moniker there are other German words with ‘Gn‘: Gnade/gnädig/begnadigen, segnen, regnen, Gnom, Gnu, Diagnose. The latter, a Greek loanword also in English, shows that English speakers *can* pronounce ‘gn‘. :)

Currently building a 1/350 scale model of one of these to display next to a Bismarck. The two are remarkably similar Some worthy historians have stated the Bayern clas as Bismarck's inspiration. Possibly, but I reckon the designer began with Ersatz Yorck.
@rob5944
@rob5944 Год назад
I did read that the Bismarck class was based in the Bayern, which resulted in a weak and poorly protected stern area.
@ploppysonofploppy6066
@ploppysonofploppy6066 Год назад
@@rob5944 The Bayerns were tough vessels. Bismarck's "achilles stern", I'm lead to believe, was a general weakness, resulting from lack of knowledge about how welded hulls need structural reinforcement. The stern of her wreck has still not been found, its failure was likely as not the reason for the jammed rudder, rather than a "lucky shot". Lutzow and Prinz Eugen suffered similar failures following torpedo strikes, and the wreck of the Scharnhorst was also lacking a stern. Seems that the Bismarck's fate was written in the decision to employ arc welding.
@rob5944
@rob5944 Год назад
@@ploppysonofploppy6066 well, when one considers the intricacies of ship design and construction it's understandable. I also gather that Germany may of copied existing drawings to speed up the build times of the Tirpitz class.

Thanks for creating your descriptions of Gernan warships as objective as possible.There´s a Brit here on YT who does similar description but when it comes to German ships I have the feeling that he´s still in war with us Germans. I mean, I know that one can criticize a lot regarding design etc. but you gotta take the treaties and their limitations in consideration. If you don´t do it - like that guy - you simply fail. So again: thanks a lot!

@@RayyMusik As I already wrote - you can´t evaluate the flaws of German designs in the inter war period without taken the limitations of the treaties in consideration. And that´s exactly what this Brit is doing. - Besides, I´m able to read between the lines. You´re probably not.

If you are referring to Drachinifel, then I suggest you watch his videos about worst ship designs, as he tears into several American and British inter-war ships. He is always fair when discussing WW1 designs, even giving the edge to German battlecruisers sometimes. Not trying to start an argument, just saying, his videos are pretty balanced.
@BestOfSound99
@BestOfSound99 Год назад
I'm german myself and Drachinifel (if you mean him) is quite subjective to the topic. German interwar and ww2 ships have flaws and their Amour layouts are often inefficient. Other Powers built comparable ships while adhering to the treaty limitations. And my interactions with him where always very pleasant, i really don't believe he has an Vendetta against us Germans.

I think if all them has been built along side their half sisters they could be a real pain in the back side to the Royal Navy . After none of the USN ships could steam over 21 knots
