Eruption Number 9 Is Only Weeks Away - Will It Occur Within The Town Boundaries?

We are getting quite wild prediction from the MET office now that expects the next eruption quite soon, and it might even occur in the village Grindavík., which would be horrible, and honestly I don't understand how they came to that conclusion. But we did however get it confirmed that the 3 scientist who noticed the decreased magma inflow were getting it right after all, although it's increasing again so they're finding might not have any meaning other than they did a good job.

The scientists have a very difficult job. They don’t have a lot of data or historic data to figure this out and they are under a lot of pressure to give answers. I think you bring up some good points. Even though you are not a volcanologist, you have many years of experience living there and your input is valuable. I appreciate you! 🤗

A part of me is thinking it’s only a matter of time. Wasn’t one of the berms almost covered last eruption or am I simply thinking of the one near the power plant?

Yes, it's frustrating, and it is bad news. But if there's a positive out of this, it's that the predictions are accurate, even if they change. That's so important, and that is what will help keep people safe. I sincerely hope that the next eruption will not occur within the town. It doesn't make sense, based on previous geological predictions. But as we've just observed, even geology can change quickly. I'll continue to keep my fingers tightly crossed for the town of Grindavík. It's a place that's now firmly implanted in my heart. ❤

100k subscribers... I think of all of the people you are reaching nowadays with your wonderful reporting and that touch of humor. That being said, this whole eruption occurrence around Grindavik since November of last year has been a struggle for the people who lived in Grindavik, and those who had their businesses there. I know the harbor is still being using for fishing, but it has to be so hard for the people to keep hearing that their town is disappearing bit by bit.

More beautiful pictures! 🤗 I, too, am surprised to hear hey expect the next eruption further south. I check vafri-is every day, also the GPS-stationdata that are published there, and see that all along the southern coast, the GPS stations rather show ground deflation rather than inflation. Is that another Graben-formation in progress or some trick of geology Professor Shawn didn't speak about recently? The only station still rising steadily according to this data is the HS2O near the Blue lagoon power plant… 🥴 Me, I can't make heads nor tails of that.

Yeah, inflow may have actually never decreased by much. From the data I've seen the inflow rate is about 6.5 cubic meters per second, which is slightly lower than the 8 to 10 cubic meters per second in January. From June 24 to July 17 some 13 million cubic meters collected in the magma chamber. This equates as said earlier to about 6.5 cubic meters per second. I'm sorry to say but the experts might be wrong. The reason the data shows a decrease may be because the crust is stretched and the to the point that uplift takes longer to be picked up by the GPS stations. I already mentioned this to Hlioarmenn and Val Troll. Val Troll if you know is a volcanologists from New Zealand, he visited Iceland several times since 2022. When I mentioned how stretched and cracked the crust is because of the uplift, earthquake swarms, eruptions and land drop after each eruption, he said that's a very real possibility.

Hi Gylfi, I already heard the bad news a few days ago and it could be a bigger eruption too. The big question will be where it will erupt and how much damage it will inflict. Iceland has come into a new period of volcanic activity, probably for years. Let’s hope the big volcanoes keep quiet. I wish you the best. Greetings from The Netherlands. Keep safe.

Thank you again. Looking at the GPS data it looks like some things have changed. Some points are still going up while others are going down and overall the movement seems to be more irregular. I would love to see why the MET office thinks the next eruption may be more to the south. I hope it will be more to the north of the last one 🙏. After all the hard work even an eruption in the same place could be too much. My thoughts and best wishes are still for the people of Iceland ❤.

I have previously mentioned the giant lava tunnel that starts from the Far East, follows the Himalayan mountain range, passes under Turkey and extends to Iceland, and also branches under the European Continent. Shortly after the lava flow stopped in Iceland, Mount Etna became active and strongly supported my idea that this mountain would become active when there was a blockage in the tunnel under Europe. Additionally, after the lava flow in Iceland stopped, there were strong earthquakes in a few places in Turkey. Currently, land fragments are trying to resist a strong underground hydraulic pressure in the coming time.

The land rise is up to the elevations it was just before the last eruption in some areas or is close in others, one area it is already surpassed it based on GPS data. The MET is saying the significant fissure movement within Grindavík, the risk due to eruption, lava flow and gas contamination is now assessed as "significant" Watching on several of the camera on MBL it was showing the fissure inside the protective wall out gashing as well as the one at the base of Hagafell, in the last eruption erupted lave and ash, and now is a fumarole .

Thank you for the update, Gylfi! Your videos are both very informative and visually gorgeous! I have come to find out that every one of the professional volcanologists, let alone the Met Office has a completely different view on what is going to happen, where it is going to happen, and timing of the next event...or if there will even BE a next event. Nobody has a consensus, just differing opinions based on “whatever”. We know that earthquakes in the area will rumble a bit ..or a lot and then stop, and then suddenly out of the blue,there will be a rift eruption..this has happened before without too much fanfare. Gylfi, ypu are right about an eruption starting at the place of least resistance..this is normal and logical.!🌟⭐️🌟

From what I can see with my amateur eyes... The GPS stations seem to show the ground has risen back to approximately where it was just before the last eruption. The inflation also seems to have leveled off... Which I would interpret as Pressure building for an eruption. Another eruption could be days to weeks away. As for the location... earthquakes seem to be scattered in about the same places they were before... I don't see anything from them that would indicate any change of location... but also nothing to rule one out. We know there are cracks and voids under the town that Magma could flow into and then erupt through. It has been sheer luck that it hasn't erupted more in the town thus far. The defensive walls have done their job... but they've been cut through before and a fissure right next to the town has erupted before. I can't say that the town is any more or less likely to be the eruption center now than it was before. But with the lava from the previous eruptions filling up the land right next to the walls... Another big eruption could over flow them and head into town. That's the most likely risk to the town as i see it. And the same could be said for the Power Plant and the Blue Lagoon.
@77ladentelliere

Thank you for this update Gilfy. My thoughts go to the People of Grindavik whose house may be exploded by a further eruption... Even if they could "sell" it to the icelandic State, it should be a shock for them to see the place they built, live in and love destroyed...

Rather ominous news Gylfi. I understand the town is evacuated but have the residents been allowed to go back and remove their belongings they may have left behind because they were thinking it was a temporary move? How do the scientists of the Met Office (or anyone else for that matter) achieve their measurements of magma inflow for something that is a few kilometres below the surface. Almost all agencies seem to protect the methods used as if it's something that might be akin to nuclear secrets.
