During the First World War, the Ottoman Empire established a wide network of camps to house prisoners of war from the allied powers. Like most, the conditions were often poor, the treatment often harsh and the complexes often established in some of the most remote, rural and desolate landscapes. Yozgat was one such camp, comprising a small collection of buildings in a rural town commandeered by the Ottoman Army to house British officers. Whilst its conditions were not the harshest, nor its prisoners the most dangerous, it became the scene for one of the most bizarre tales of escape that the first world war and just about any incarceration, anywhere in the world, would ever see, involving buried treasure, a Ouija board and an audacious pair of pranksters with a strong desire to get home.

I'm astonished by these podcasts. I've never heard of most of them. But all are so interesting. Thank you for the upload.

Consistently amazing, in every way. Most channels regurgitate the same material... over and over. I bet you are the most interesting person to know in real life. You have the absolute best content & narrative voice. Thank you Ben-as always ;)

I love this, turning what was a bit of a well meaning grift to keep moral up into an escape opportunity.

I understand these men knew the very real horrors of war and captivity but I have to say this is one of the funniest tales I have ever heard. These men made Hogan's Heroes look like lightweights! I was laughing out loud and then my fat old chihuahua fell in the garbage can so I laughed harder. A good time was had by all!

Concerning his attitude about it being easy to trick them. I think maybe what he was trying to say is that the Turks were far more superstitious than themselves. I have traveled the world more widely than most people I know, and way, way outside tourist areas. The levels of people's superstitions seem to vary widely from country to country or region to region. I've seen things that I've thought incredibly silly taken deadly serious by people with a different world view.

How many places believe a man becomes a real woman simply by saying he is one?
