This is the angriest review I have given a Venture Bros episode. The whole imaginary "Part 2" aspect really frustrated me when I first saw the episode. I also struggled with the confusing B plot about the Hand of Osiris. Dr Orpheus being a dick also wound me up. It was a bad week for him. It's always a bad week for Dr Venture, so his behaviour was pretty standard.

My interpretation is that this was a very specific cultural pull. Not sure about other countries, but in the US, cable channels used to be notorious for showing syndicated cartoons like Johnny Quest out of order or at seemingly random times to fill programming hours. This would mean you’d get single episodes of multi-part stories with no context, so you either rolled with it or changed the channel. Pretty sure Comedy Central even did this to Futurama when they first got the broadcast rights.

I had never heard of Johnny Quest before I got into the Venture Bros, so this reference completely escaped me when I first saw this episode. I was very familiar with animations being shown out of order, though because of watching South Park on Paramount. Adult Swim used to do the same thing with all their shows too. I didn't mind too much, because they were all self contained episodes. Even The Venture Bros was at this stage, because the major continuity arcs had not yet been developed. I had a healthy mistrust that a TV network might carelessly broadcast the sequel for a 2 part episode without any explanation, but I wasn't aware that it was a well known practice. In response to your comment, I can see how people who have grown up watching US cable might recognise this trope and understand the joke. Thanks for the explanation, it definitely provides context to this episode. Out of interest, I don't think Johnny Quest was ever broadcast in the UK. Over the years I have randomly asked people from various age groups (usually when telling them about the Venture Bros) if they have heard of the show and no one ever has. A lot of US cartoons are very popular here, but that one passed us by.

The series overall is a satire of 1960's-70's adventure series, when the lack of video recorders and streaming meant that the frequent event of missing an episode would lead to just the kind of confusion you get in this one.
@FFlynnsArcade

The use of satire was very effective here. Although unfortunately some people (by which I mean me) just thought the episode was shoddy broadcasting - which was still a thing on Satellite TV in the 00s. The joke worked too well.

You covered a lot of my favorite lines from this episode, but this one always gets me Present day Brock: “ok listen up! When the gates open, Me, Poe, and Me rush in. You got that?” Brock from 12:47 AM: “you’re gonna kill him when he walks in aren’t you?” Present day Brock: “Oh you know it”

I think I'm amongst those who quite like this episode. I liked that it used the Johnny Quest framing device to then abandon the Johnny Quest plotline. The framing enhanced the theme of what happens AFTER you're a boy wonder. Dr. Venture metaphorically left his childhood in that death trap and pursued his own interests, which is part of a journey to genuine happiness, but then he failed at that. Most probably because he tried to be like his dad, and he always pales in that comparison. Also I like the line where Billy is like "I've never known the taste of a woman" and his friend is like "what, literally? Because I don't take many trips down south, either." 🤭
@FFlynnsArcade
@FFlynnsArcade 3 месяца назад
That is a really good point. Rusty's life was all boy adventuring and I like the idea that his escape from the cult of Osiris worked on a metaphorical level. The shrinking competition really works as a metaphor and this adds to it. Billy's lunch box dragged him back to his early life, but he was strangely happy to be reminded of it, which was a nice, heartwarming touch. I remember a quote from a much later episode when he questioned whether he had ever rode a pterodactyl, or whether it was just a scene in the Rusty Venture cartoon. The idea that there is a show within a show happening on the Venture Bros is really brought out in this episode. I didn't enjoy this episode much but I am glad I made this video. People have made some really interesting points about it and whilst it will never be a favourite, I have a new found respect for it.

As I watched this episode when it first aired, I was also briefly confused about the "part two" aspect, because at the time Adult Swim was going through a phase of doing online-only mini-episodes of some shows and I figured that must have been what happened... but then as the episode went on, I figured out what they were going for and I actually really enjoyed it because it captures the essence of something that I experienced a lot as a kid-- being thoroughly confused by episodes of a syndicated TV show airing out of order, or simply missing one because there were no DVRs and if you couldn't watch when it was airing, you were just SOL.
@FFlynnsArcade
@FFlynnsArcade 4 месяца назад
That must have been confusing , but at least you had enough background knowledge to know that Adult Swim were showing online episodes. I first discovered Adult Swim purely by chance. At the time I was a big fan of South Park and Futurama and I was channel hopping one night and found they were showing animations on an obscure channel called Bravo. I didn't know what Adult Swim was and whenever I mentioned it to people I knew, no one had ever heard of it. Because I used to watch these shows before I went to sleep, it didn't occur to me to Google them. After watching "Tag Sale You're It" I decided I loved the show and I always hoped The Venture Bros would get broadcast. The whole experience was very random, and felt very much like watching old kids' cartoons - which were shown out of order, so it never occurred to me that the "Part 2" thing was a parody of this. I really thought I had missed part 1! Stylistically it is a very clever thing to do and I would have appreciated it, if I had known at the time!

@FFlynnsArcade Месяц назад
@@homerco213 Byron Orpheus was my favourite character in the Venture Bros - up to this point in the saga anyway. He is a great dad to Triana and he took looking after Hank and Dean during "Return To Spider Skull Island" really seriously. In this episode he is nearly as bad as Rusty, so I felt disappointed in him. But I suppose it gave his character depth and complexity which adds a richness to him and is a massive piece of development which really brought him into the universe, but I felt relieved when he formed The Order of The Triad. Jefferson and Al are great so I preferred to see him spending time with them.

As an old person, I felt this episode was written just for me. Before streaming we watched old cartoons on syndication. What was on was what was on. So a lot of times you’d catch the part 2 that would open with short clips from the previous episode for context. It took me right back to that time. This is probably in my top 5 Venture Bros episodes rankings.

@@marcmcvey1844 a few people have said something similar and in hindsight I can appreciate how clever this episode was. I can see why people like it, it just wasn't for me at the time. I always hoped we would get another Escape to the House of Mummies, but that it would be like Part 9. Then have it start very far removed from anything involving the Osiris cult or mummies making you ponder what the hell happened that now they were like on Mars or something.
@FFlynnsArcade
@FFlynnsArcade 4 месяца назад
That would have been pretty cool. Especially if it happened many years after this episode. The Venture Bros loved doing call-backs to throw away events from episodes which happened years ago. It would have been a great twist to imagine that this Escape saga had been secretly going on for years but had never been mentioned on screen. I continue to hold out hope that there will be another VB movie in about 5 -10 years time. Maybe this is what it would be about?

I enjoy this episode. I believe the Venture Bros. format asked the question, “what did the Johnny Quests, Rex Morgans, and other 60’s era adventurer stereotypes do in their off time between adventures?”. Until Escape to the House of Mummies: Part 2, we never actually saw them on an actual adventure. In order to try to remain true to the shows format, we only see snippets and aren’t able to get a real sense of what is going on. We are aware though of the goings on at the Venture compound because that’s where the show lives. My enjoyment of the show notwithstanding, your commentary is valid, especially with regard to Dr. Orpheus’s poor parenting choices.

I'm sure I didn't understand anything happening in this episode the first time or two I saw it. Every few minutes I'd wonder "Did I miss something?" and have to reverse a minute or two. I've always struggled to follow some of the prevailing plot points throughout the series - and maybe I wasn't always critically thinking about what I was hearing or seeing - and this episode often made me feel like I'd never quite keep up and would just have to go with it.

I don't think the B plot is supposed to make sense, TBH. I tried to wrap my head around it, but it becomes so strange that it is impossible. Especially at the end of the the episode where they are in the snow and there are cavemen there! I think just running with it is the best choice with this episode. I watched it about 5 times before making this video and I am still none the wiser.

I love this episode but back in the tv days of adult swim I saw this episode several times thinking I missed part one. It was very frustrating to keep missing part one. I didn’t know it at the time, but I had seen the whole series to that point, but all of them in random order, so I wasn’t really aware of any kind of canonical story. It was all episodic and I thought I missed just one episode

That was exactly my experience of this episode! Adult Swim never showed the episodes in order and I never knew when The Venture Bros - or any other show was going to be broadcast. I just used to hope it was on TV that night. Whenever this episode was on, my heart sank a bit and I mentally switched off because I thought I had missed an important part of the plot which I would never pick up. Now I know what is going on here, I think it is a clever joke, but it really bothered me, back in the day. I am glad I am not on my own with this!

I think this episode really drives home what is probably happening off screen. They have mentioned ant people, robot dinosaur bones and a massive fight at a Rocky Horror Picture Show, but this is the first time this has been depicted. I am still not a fan of this episode but I can respect what they were trying to do here. @@fenrirhere in the book the page about "Guess Who's Coming To State Dinner" starts with Doc Hammer saying "I don't want to hear a Goddamn word about that episode". All the episodes are interesting, but I really enjoy making videos about the deeply loved ones like "Tag Sale...." and the less popular ones like the pilot episode. Since that one is so notorious amongst both the fans and the creator, then there should be a lot to say about it.

I love this one but completely understand your point of view. The worst thing I could say about this episode is that it's kind of a Venture Bros take on Family Guy with all the random scenes and random references to real people. I like it as a one off but am glad they never revisited this style.
@FFlynnsArcade
@FFlynnsArcade 4 месяца назад
I agree. It works as a one off, experimental episode, but if they were all like that, then I wouldn't have continued to watch the show all these years. I hadn't thought about the similarities to Family Guy, but now I think Family Guy cut aways might have been an influence on this one. The only episode I have seen which is in any way similar to this is "Blood of The Father, Heart of Steel". I really disliked that episode when I first saw it. But I watched it repeatedly and really enjoyed trying to piece together what was going on. Now I am a massive fan. I am still not convinced by this episode, though, although I respect the way they took a real risk by making such a strange episode.
