Nice sheathwork, boss. Thoughts on those TKC ESEE 4 handles? I like the idea of the length, but that “beak” at the pommel looks like it could be uncomfortable in some situations.

I actually recorded this vid twice. The first time, I spoke about how the extended Esee 4 scales from the knife connection had to be touched up to fix the wonky grinds where the handles met at the end of the tang. It still isn't perfect, so fit n finish on those particular scales kinda sucks. That being said, the beak isn't a problem at all (actually aids in drawing the knife) and the new balance is something special. Lily liked the E4 before, but now, it's really become her knife. Appreciate ya bud! 👏

@@WhispyWoods. All in all, it's worth it. Lily loves the new feel of the E4 now with those. After a lanyard, you prolly wouldn't even notice. I guess as a guy who makes things with his hands for people, I'm picky about the details. So, take that into account tew...

I've had many many many esee's over the years. I modify then sell them. Anyway I've had every set of scales for the ones I've had and for the 4, the extended are hands down THE best fit for that knife, imo. YMMV. Unless your hands are sasquatch size, you won't really notice the hook in it, but it makes for pulling the knife out better and easier and if you need to do some small chopping, it's great. Only downside is if you use a lanyard, it will stick up more than with other scales. That's an easy mod though with a 1/4 inch drill bit just side drill to the back. In all honesty, I don't think you'd be unsatisfied with them. Dale and Ethan at TKC are awesome guys and as long as you don't install them, they'll let you return them. You can dry fit them and see how they feel.

Thanks David. Yah, lucky cut for sure. Either that, or my superhuman heaking abilities are just kicking in at 41. 🤣The fold overs are great for edc too. I'm going to add some nylon straps for scout carry on the site soon. Stay safe out there bud! 👍

I just recently found your channel and I dig the sheath work I've seen as well as the love for Esee. I'm a big fan of them as well. I've agreed with a lot of the stuff you've said in your videos I've seen so far but I would absolutely disagree with your statement that ball bearings, washers, locks and super-steels in folders are gimmicks. If you have been in the knife world for a long time, you damn well know that all of the above mentioned can make a big difference in a folder. Maybe you used the wrong word here so I'll give you the benefit of the doubt. Below is my simple take on what you've mentioned. Ball bearings/washers - Having a nylon washer on your knife vs a brass washer or even better, a well designed ball bearing system makes a huge difference in how smooth the knife opens/closes. Anyone who has continuously taken apart and put together folders would know this. Locks - Locks are a preference but some are easier to manipulate and are more durable than others. Back in the day I used to be a huge fan of frame locks over liners because of how beefy they are but after years of carrying and fidgeting with folders, I fell in love with the Spyderco PM2 compression lock over liners/frame locks which were a dream to play with over any other lock in the market at that time, then we got some axis locks and button locks which were amazing as well. Both of these IMO are superior to frame and liner locks because of the ease of opening/closing. Not that I shy away from liner/frame locks or even back locks because I I still own many and like them. Although "outdated", back locks still serve a purpose as well especially in large and heavy folding knives. I think they're way more secure than what I've mentioned so far and that's what you want in a large folder. Super steels - S30V has been a standard in "high end" folders for a very long time and I still have plenty of S30V steels which I love. Trying out the many steels as I have in the past, I've found that some suit me better and I prefer them more than others depending on the task. Edge retention, ease of sharpening and toughness play a significant role in folders. For example between S30V, S110V, and S90V I've found that the S90V is the happy medium and works the best. It sharpens as easy as S30V, it's tough like S110V and the edge retention is superior to both S30V and S110V. S30V is softer and S110V is hard and brittle. I've chipped S110V blades easily and fixing it is a pain. I must underline that the heat treatment of anything you ever carry plays a crucial role no matter what steel it may be. I'm a traditionalist when it comes to fixed blades. A high carbon steel is the way to go, be it in the kitchen or out in the field. I'd rather have a high carbon steel fixie vs a 3V, S30V, Magnacut or any other stainless steel. I hope you take the time to look and experience these in the future so you can truly appreciate the many "gimmicks" as you've mentioned.

I read most of your super long comment, which completely misunderstood what I said in this video. . . Since it's over two years old, I had to go back and rewatch the whole damned thing to understand what compelled you to write so much and yeah, that's not at all what I meant. What I said was a lot of fixed blade guys are sick of the gimmicks used in marketing to sell folding knives and that a fixed blade is more straight forward. I appreciate the watch and the giant comment, but you completely missed my point so your response didn't make any sense to me. Obviously, I like high end features on folders. I have an entire channel dedicated to it. I also probably own more folders than you or 99.9999% of the people watching this channel. Comes with the territory as a reviewer, so no need for the book report on how ball bearings assist with smoother action ect. . . You went off in a completely different direction on this one. Thanks for watching though!

You feeling better yet? I picked up a Condor Wastelander recently and it has one of the better production kydex sheaths I've come across. It's a "spine sheath" (as they call it) which is a pancake style with most of the spine side left open. It works amazingly well and I wonder if the approach could be applied to the larger esee knives such as the 6. Love the colors used in your sheaths!

Hope you feel better soon! As for the jimping, I've seen other guys use two pieces of blue painters tape over that part and mold it then. When it comes to the contoured scales, esee's are a tad thinner and they are more comfortable for me also. The sheath I have from you already for the 4 has the silver eyelets and a couple were cracked a little but they go really well with that sheath, so I'm not concerned at all. The split in that part is normal also. Unless you want to make a locking screw there, I wouldn't worry about it. Yeah I have the extended scales, and love them. I modded them so paracord has a place to go instead of sticking out so much. But I have to mod everything lol. Thank you for ordering those washers, I thought you already had them in stock otherwise I would've skipped them or chose black. Question though, have you already molded the kydex for it? If not I'd like to switch it up, put black on the left and green on the inside. If you have, then don't worry about it. Maybe you guys can help me with ideas for theme for the black and green. Ok this is long enough. Didn't mean to write another book.. Lol.

Oh that's totally fine man. (And don't worry about writing books, I do it for a living. 🤣) But no, I'm still waiting on your washers, so anything you wanna do, just send it through Instagram so I can reference it when stuff comes in. I like foliage green with emt red and od green with blood red (if that helps). orange and tan are also nice accent colors there. :)

Also, stay tuned, I have more mods coming onto my ESEE 4 HD 😁 Hopefully they turn out like I want. In the mean time, I just got a Gerber prodigy and trying to figure out how to mod that, and my condor moonshiner lol. With taxes, I'll probably send those two in for some kydex clothing.

I hate pancake sheaths… so much unnecessary size
@5MinuteKnives
@5MinuteKnives 11 месяцев назад
Not if you're using an attachment like a tek lok for example. Taco sheaths attach at the weakest point and for scout carry for example (blade side) so you can really screw a taco sheath up if it's scout carry with a tek lok by accidentally putting weight on the top. I make both but it depends on the knife and how you're gonna carry it. Oh also for molly attachments, pancake is much more stable on a vest or pack. 👍
