In this video I offer my thoughts on the ESEE Laser Strike knife as compared to other knives in my collection, specifically the ESSE 4. It is intended for informational and educational purposes only in hopes that it helps you with your decision to purchase or just to satisfy your curiosity. It is a rather long video, so thank you in advance for your patients.
Later in the video I look at the size of the Laser Strike compared to two other knives in my collection; the Mora Bushcraft Force and the Helle GT.
I've added a paper cut test just for fun to briefly demonstrate the edges.
Here is an outline of the video based on time codes. Think of them as similar to chapter markers on a DVD. I've mainly done this to expedite your viewing needs and to help you target specific sections, especially if you are viewing the video more than once. Click on the time code and it should jump you to the portion of the video described next to it. You might have to wait for the entire video to load before it works properly.
1:48 - a little background on my knife needs and how I typically use my knives
3:17 - a look at the Laser Strike sheath, molle back and their features
9:44 - a look at the Laser Strike knife
17:25 - discussing the internal ferro rod and cotton tender
19:55 - a comparison between the ESEE 4 sheath/molle back and the ESEE Laser Strike sheath/molle back
20:31 - a comparison between the ESEE 4 and Laser Strike
33:04 - size comparison with the Mora Bushcraft Force knife
35:25 - size comparison with the Helle GT knife
38:28 - a paper cut test with all four knives
42:35 - conclusion and final size comparison with all four knives
I've since done a followup video showing the convex edge I've put on it and I also talk about wetness getting into the handle scales. Checkt that video out here - • Laser Strike convex ed...
Again, this video is to offer some insight into the layout and functionality of the knife. I've only done very minimal "real world" cutting with it at this point. I hope to offer a followup review in a few weeks after I've put a convex edge on it and used it in the field.
I mention Dr. Wako in the video. For an even greater depth of knowledge and insight into knives, edges and real world experience - especially with regard to hunting - be sure to check out his Virtuovice channel! I've picked up a lot of edge reprofiling tips from him and subscribe to his channel myself. At this time he has yet to review the Laser Strike, but does offer an excellent video on reprofiling an ESEE 4 blade with custom handle. You can find that video here - • The semi-custom ESEE-4... .
You can also search his channel for more information on the ESEE 6, 5, 4, 3 and Izula knives as well. His reviews are by no means limited to ESEE, but since that's the focus of the video here, I figured I'd mention it.
Hope this helps!
- R

Mr. Kephart wrote some great stuff on wilderness/camping/survival, in his book's he showed what a good knife look's like, I like the Kephart style knife, that's why I bought the Ontario Blackbird SK-5, another reason easy, it's made out of a very good stainless steel, CM 154, this knife is a nice version of that type of design, I might get it, it would be my first Esee knife.

Very good video. Much thought and detail revealed and that's what I needed to make my decision. thanks bro.

I too have a 4 and Izula - both convexed. I used the Izula as my necker when hiking. The 4 now stays at home. Of the ones you list the LS is the only other one that I felt fit my needs. Actually really like that little Izula.

Thanks, bro. Figured it would allow folks to bypass the junk they don't care about, especially if they are revisiting it. Scrubbing a playhead can be a pain!

Great video and insight into the ESEE-LS. I, like you, feel different knives are made for different chores. I'm waiting on my Laser Strike now. I was thinking on a 5, but didn't want the weight. I think the LS will do the trick. Thanks for a thorough review.

Thanks for the time you put into this video. The length kept me from wanting to watch it. If I had known you made a time line for it I would have checked it out sooner. I'm glad I did now.

whats the little notch in front of the choil ?
@OneDegreeLife
@OneDegreeLife Год назад
I usually refer to a finger choil as a finger groove and a traditional choil, or sharpening choil as just a choil. I apologize if I created confusion. So, the little notch is the sharpening choil - basically let’s the end of the sharp edge have a gap before the ricasso or handle start so that you can sharpen all the way so you don’t run the risk of grinding/damaging other parts of the knife - if that makes sense. Kinda like an overhang. The larger grooves are for finger confort/security. I think technically since it’s a recess in the metal it’s also a choil (finger choil), I just called them grooves. Hope this makes sense. Cheers

I want to do a review on more of these knives, but want others to compare them to. For example, I'm planing an Enzo Camper and Aurora 3V review and a Mora TopQ and Bushcraft Force review and one for the Helle as well. The problem has been, I work 60-70 hours a week and I've been trying to finish two documentaries I shot in Africa in July. I'm hoping to get some new stuff up in the next few weeks. Thx.

Mate, a great video. You have put a lot of thought by preparing for it. I like the way you put yourself in the shoes of the us the viewers and put this timelines in case we wanted to jump directly there. Really well thought and I am seeing it for the first time. This knife goes on my list definitely. The Laser Strike I mean.

+Hristo Kassovski Thank you for the nice comment! It always helps knowing someone found it helpful - even in my earlier videos where I was trying to figure out how I wanted to go about things. The LS is a splendid knife, with it's only major potential drawback for many users being the coating (first steel striking primarily). My best friend took it from me and has never longed for another blade. I miss having it around, but I get to try more knives now and it's always available if I wanna work with it :) Best of both worlds I guess. I hope you get one and love it as much as I did! I'm hoping to get an ESEE 4 with modified handle when it gets released. Cheers!

I'm not too crazy about just plain 1095 carbon steel, although Esee does temper them well.

I get that on my written posts, sorry I am from the old school where authority or an instructor talked and we the audience listened. It's modern communications and instant gratification. I think you are doing a wonderful presentation, just full of info and demostration. Don't worry, I have seen done batoning plenty of times. New sub.

I have no experience with knife combat. It certainly feel that edge sharpness on 1095 is a very capable slicer, the tip is fairly strong and it's weighty. Other than that I don't know. If you want a quick slicer/piercer, you might be able to find a better option.

That would be cool. I'm so busy, I have no idea when I'll get out again. Maybe toward the holidays...

I've seen Kephart stylesas well, Bark River I think had one too. I typically see them with round handles - like broom handles - and not sure I'd like them. 1095 is a great steel and ESEE does heat treat them well (Rowen) and its very easy to sharpen and reprofile, though it is not as "tough" in edge holding, etc. vs say 3v. It's also affordable! I like ESEE and hear good things about TOPS as well. I really like ESEEfor a heavy blade.

it's between the laser strike and the Esee 5.....some of my training knives are a pound and i don't want to fight with something that heavy....so i guess the LS is the winner!! Thanks for your help!

Great Video , I have (2) esee 4's , (1) 6 , and (2) Izulas. Laser strike is next. Like that choil. Esee 5 was way to heavy , sold it

Thanx for the review! I got one question, maybe you could help me out: Just received my new laser strike. On one side there is just a hair of a gap visible between the scales and the tang (really minor, but noticeable compared to the other side). Is this normal with this knive, maybe cause there are no liners, or could this be an issue (since water might get into the recess inside the handle)? I´d really appreciate you help
@OneDegreeLife
@OneDegreeLife 8 лет назад
Hummm, maybe someone else can comment here. Mine were not like that. I suppose you could sand it slightly to ensure it's flat. If you're concerned you can send it back to the vendor I supposed, depending on where you got it. Sorry for the delay. I was out of the country.
@wartstein8814
@wartstein8814 8 лет назад
Thanks a lot for the reply! Meanwhile I guess the very small gap is not a problem at all. But I´d have one more question: Though I still love the Laser strike (general sharpness, size, Ergos and so on) I have to say: It bites into wood really bad compared to almost all other knifes I own. So I guess the edge angle is maybe not 20 per side (as esee states) but more like 25 or somewhat?... Was that also the case with your laser strike before you convexed it (which I am not planning to do..)?
@OneDegreeLife
@OneDegreeLife 8 лет назад
Yes. I've not been an out-of-the-box fan of the V edge that comes on the bigger ESEEs (LS and 4 to be specific) for wood work overall. The Izula is better, but also much thinner. Don't get me wrong the factory edge is very sharp, but, as you mentioned, the degree is wider because the cutting edge isn't very high. Honestly, it was my love of the ESEE 4, but dislike of the V edge for my type of wood work, that made me decide to try my own convexing several years ago. So, yes, I don't care much for the ESEE's in wood use right out of the box, so I convex them. Obviously this is a personal opinion, but it seems that you are finding a similar preference. Their new Camp-Lore line may solve this problem, but most of the knives are smaller. I'm hoping to get one of the new ESEE 4HMs, but the edge will likely be the same. Best of luck!
@wartstein8814
@wartstein8814 8 лет назад
Thanks! Actually I only once convexed a knive, was not too impressed. Probably I did not do it too well... Do you really feel it makes a blade perform significantly better in wood? I´ll try to change the angle of the egde first (and keeping it a V-edge), making it steeper, like maybe 18 or 19 per side
@OneDegreeLife
@OneDegreeLife 8 лет назад
For me, yes. A scandi or shallower convex is easer in wood in my hands. The bit faster and cleaner and it's easer for me to do wood curls with a convex. But it's just preference. Plenty of folks get along fine with the ESEEs as they come, I just wasn't one of them :)

Sorry dude, but I just couldn't listen to 45 minutes of um, uh, uh, um, um, um, uh. I'm sure the info was great and the review was well done...but I just can't listen to um/uh over and over again. Nothing against the review, its just a really bad habit some people have when they're trying to grasp a thought on the fly. But 45 mintues of it? Can't do it, doesnt' make the information bad...its just me. I'd suggest, 'voice overing' the video with a script from what you said in the video
