For $108 on Amazon right now, this knife & leather sheath is a great deal. Both are USA made & Esee stands behind it with a lifetime transferable warranty. I've had mine for a few days now & like it a lot. The spine really attacks a ferro rod; sharp! 👏This is one of the best reviews on this knife. Excellent close up shots of it ! Thx.👏

Awesome review man. We appreciate yer honesty and straightforward approach. That sheath will break in some, you can even wet form it....a very short 2" or so lanyard helps in clearing the knife from the sheath.

Hey just got a pr4 yesterday, and the knife cut a big whole in the sheath, has this happened in the past?

I've had done of these since they came out and it's my favorite knife. ESEE knocked this out of the park.

I have one of these. I agree on the looks. I think this is a really good looking knife. It's not my favorite outdoors/bushcraft knife, but it is my favorite Kephart style knife of the 3 or 4 I own. I thinks it's amazing what you get for the money.

A lot of people seem to really dislike the look of this knife, I personally really like it, I think it's a cool looking knife. Also, I see a lot of reviews talking about the scales on this knife not being comfortable. I've got to say though, in my experience they are fine. I think for a lot of people it's just a visual thing, the scales LOOK uncomfortable, so they convince themselves that they are.

I like this one. I generally prefer the aesthetics of a drop or clip point, but Kephart style spear points like that deliver in the utility department. If the handle is comfortable as you say-it certainly looks nice-then it appears that this knife is made to be used. I prefer about 1/8 or 3/16” stock on a camp knife. Some blades are just too thick to cut well, but if you’re doing lots of batoning I can see why some people want a thicker blade. Great review.

I have both but have been torn between a favorite small/med knife... ESEE 3 or 4. Even though I also like choils, this knife was perfect as it is the thickness of an ESEE 3 and the length of a 4. I don't miss the choil. A kydex sheath is a future addition.

Hi, this knife is a real beaut though there might be some hot spots quite for sure. Besides I admire your ability to withstand the cold, I'd surely have frozen after one minute of talking.
@LuisGonzalez-gl4wc
@LuisGonzalez-gl4wc 6 лет назад
Crocket, I have both ESEE 4 and ESEE PR4, and I prefer the ESEE PR4. The ESEE PR4 is a better slicer and has better handle ergonomics, in my opinion. I have noticed that hot spot that you were talking about, but so far has not been an issue.

If you wanted you could take the sharp corners off the section of the spine where you bare down on, and leave the rest for the ferro rod, scraping, and so forth.

Hi, I would like to take a great compact bushcraft / survival knife that you can rely on, in your opinion this Esee Pr4 may be the right choice, let me know your opinion, thanks Michele.
@larrykramer6057
@larrykramer6057 6 лет назад
I valued thick blades until I realized that they were good for wood processing and not much else, and maybe you should try to bring a hatchet. Now I like the thinner blade as on the PR4 as it will do almost anything.

I think it comes down to what you want to do with the knife and the specific features you're after. I would say define those and see what knife fits it the best.

@DEATHMETALRUST

Great review. Would you recommend this over the ESEE 4?
@Cr0cket20
@Cr0cket20 6 лет назад
Both great knives. It really comes down to what you want to do with the knife. Do you like spear point vs drop point, do you not like the coating on the esee 4 (although you can remove it and if memory serves get a stainless version without the coating), etc. Define what you will be doing with the knife then see what features of the E4 vs PR4 serve you better.

My ideal size for an outdoor knife is about 4-6" blade. As time goes by I'm even leaning towards 4-5".
@paulie4x1
@paulie4x1 6 лет назад
Say Heah CrOcket, Great review, very down to the point. I like your explanation for why the knife was made like that. It's a Kephart Style, and that's asuccess in its own. I wish you would do Combo's with certain knives. I like a 4" blade, But I always parley mine with a larger knife because I sometimes run out of real-estate when using a 4" blade. So yeah, I had a beautiful Piggyback Sheath made for my Rodent 4 which is one of my Fav's Bushcraft Knives. I chose the Rodent 4 because of the Lightning Bolt Handle and it has a Choil, Anyhow I teamed my Rodent 4 with my Rodent 9, a lovely piece of kit. Yup, I Baldric Carry them. Anyhow, I always said, If I didn't go with my Swamp Rat Stable, most definitely it would of been Essee. Oh, I also like that Rocky Mountain Track type handle. Dilly Dilly.,,.p

The LS is a thicker and longer blade. I really like the LS but since picking up a PR4 prototype in 2015 I’ve hardly ever taken the LS into the field. The PR4 is the same thickness as the Esee3 so it just feels more nimble to me. Less bulky and still gets the job done.

Aesthetically, I don't like the blade shape, but I imagine it is quite functional. Other than that it has a cool look and I imagine the sheath will break in.
@Cr0cket20
@Cr0cket20 6 лет назад
Agreed. I prefer the look of a drop point or clip blade. But for the application of this blade I think it works well which then helps the look in my mind.
@addicted2tone349
@addicted2tone349 6 лет назад
This blade design takes some getting used to but that point being inline with the handle center is what sets the Kephart style apart. I've had a PR4 since they were released and it's a fantastic knife! It's very well balanced and nimble. This paired with a small axe is pretty much camping perfection to me.

Myth #1 Carbon steel knives have better edge retention than Stainless steel.Myth #2 1095 is a great steel with great edge retention.Myth #3 Essee knives are very good.Myth #4 Ka-Bars steel is 1095.Myth #5 Batoning dulls the edge (No it doesn't at all.After the knife gets into the wood,the cheeks of the blade that split the wood,make room for the edge to pass through,without touching the wood at all.)

Visually i love this knife, function wise it looks painful to hold. As a collector of many, many knives...thin handles are personally a discomfort for me. Maybe someday we'll get thicker handle scales.
@kriskabin
@kriskabin 2 года назад
Mine feels good in my medium sized hands. There are aftermarket replacement scales available for this knife, or some people are slipping in liners behind the original scales. The liners allow you to keep the leather sheath. New fatter scales for $50 will require a different sheath to fit it, so even more $$$.
