This never gets old! I seen this video over 15 years ago and I still find it entertaining and insightful. Tatang illustrisimo is no joke. I also like how Sir Sioc describes things.

Thank you for this video as I only have photos of Antonio Illustrisimo from when I met him in 81 in Manila. He seems to have gotten better even though he was 90 when this was shot! Erle Montaigue

Salamat kaayo! Wala ko kabalo nga bisaya si Manong Tatang. I was listening closely to the conversation and heard them speaking in the cebuano dialect, I always thought that Tatang was from the Luzon, thanks for posting this vid.

This is the true essence of martial arts -- Self-preservation. No fluff, just the power to disarm, outsmart and destroy your opponent so you survive.

actually yes. the left hand aka the live hand/weak hand is there to protect your center line... the same way it is used in wing chun although footing is different.

I feel very lucky to have trained on several occasions with Tatang, Tony Diego, and Christopher Ricketts. Tatang was deadly, (as are Diego and Ricketts) but very kind as well.

They used live blades during the beginning of the demo. Tatang Illustrisimo (old man on the left) demonstrated his skills on his partner, but fearing injuries, they switched to wooden blades later. The host in the middle mentioned it during the live sparring demo session. Hope this helps you understand.

I've been doing FMA for the last 5 years and was recently introduced to Illustrisimo system recently. As a student of the Inosanto Acamdey, I've seen many systems, all I can say about this one is WOW. Now we have a small group in Los Angeles that trains every weekend with Master "Topher" Ricketts and his son Bruce. One of the 5 Pillars of Illustrisimo and the head of Bakbakan International. Let me know you are interested.

Tatang Ilustrisimo is still awesome and his fighting skills were second to none. Training with live blades was normal for many Eskrima Arnis Kali practicioners and as real as it gets.

If you make it out to Manila there is a shop in Binondo where you can find it. And another place where you can train with GM Tony Diego who many see as his heir to the system.

A number of Tatang's top students, now masters and grandmasters teach in the NCR. Email here on FB for more info. Or if you feel lucky try showing up one weekend morning in either QC Circle or the Luneta. Also the UP campus. Expect to walk around for a while, ask questions, be nice and you might find the instructor you're looking for.

I believe he said "itak orientation", focus is on weaponry (blade orientation). Itak is like a long blade, so he says that his art is primarily based on the use of edged weapons.

You mean to ask, "Why does Tatang like to make his opponent drop the sword?" I guess that's the flashiest part of Tatang's art...the noisy clanging of dropped metal blades on the pavement after he disarms a bladed attack.

hindi lang yan muslim at Igorot, buong Pilipinas yan. All of the "ancient" Filipino tribes that lived in the different parts of the Philippine islands practiced Vendettas, killing every member of the family of a rival clan. Visayans practiced it, Lumads practiced it, Kapampangan, etc. That was the way of life back then, vendettas, for every Filipino tribe here in the Philippines. Seriously, people should start reading history instead of spouting inaccurate comments on the net.

@GaolisVideoLog welll i know for a fact we also have fencing schools and ours are world class too, but i dont really consider fencing to be a fighting style, its just sword fighting, its a sport for the rich, we have boxing too and i guess that is a fighting style but its not our own, like everyone has a boxing gym somewhere, in germany, usa etc. i mean like an english martial art. There was one called barjitsu or something but its not really known anymore

Krav maga is not called martial arts, because it's not a sport. It's self defense, without trying to inflict pain of injuries... It's self defense in the purest form, try to free yourself and walk away. Eskrima is called a Martial Art, because you train to make the moves as fluently as possible, whilst making the pain and damage as big as possible. So, they are not comparable;)
