I am from Virginia. I am teaching 6th, 7th, and 8th ESL classes. I teach 50 minute virtual classes every day. I would like some help with virtual planning to hit all domains. Or should I focus on two domains per lesson.
@@kathleendrummond5909 I would aim for hitting all 4 domains in each lesson, however, it is not always necessary for it to be an effective lesson. Here is an example of a lesson that hits all domains: wida.wisc.edu/sites/default/files/resource/Lesson-Plan-6-12.pdf
Can we all just take a moment to appreciate the effort made behind the scenes? I loved everything about it! Lesson planning is stressful, but this video is so useful & even fun to watch with all of this amazing editing ✨big love ❤️
I started them off with word study, vocabulary, writing, then reading. I spend like thirty minutes, so I teach the vocabulary quickly. When I read the story, I go over the vocabulary again and get into the reading. For the writing, I get them started on the different types of essays just briefly going over it. I just am very limited in time to 30 minutes. As for the lesson planning, I am lucky to have an administration that doesn’t focus on that, but how you will teach them to the students. They are ok with just a brief overlook schedule type of lesson plan.
I have been teaching ESL to adults for a couple decades now and was recently offered what feels almost impossible but there is an enormous need. This is extracurricular, outside the school district for children of non English speaking, newly arrived parents. My teammates speak Creole and some Spanish; some children speak two languages but most speak little to no English. My teammates have some teaching experience but not ESL. My students range in age from about 6 to 16. I am desperate to find help/guidance/materials/activities… to give my absolutely precious, mostly very bright students the leg up to be able to strut their intelligence and get the respect and teacher involvement/ investment they need to shine academically! I’ve watched two of your beginner videos that I just found and WILL watch the rest in n the next few days but have to run teach my class now. Thank you so much again!!💕
First of all, thank you for you amazing contribution to the world of teaching. It takes a lot of work and love. If I can be of assistance, please let me know!
Hi Dr. Sandra Quinones, My name is Maria De Andrade, thank you for your tips and very explicit video! Hope to be able to learn a lot more from you videos.
Hi Dr. Hemphill, My name is Anh from Vietnam Thanks for your very detiled content about Lesson plans and Objectives I hope to see more videos about lesson plans
Thank you some much❤ I have been studying English as my second language for over a decade. Recently,I started to tutor in ESL . And I was terrified by how inexperienced I as a teacher. I am from Georgia and I am preparing to take my English Teacher License. Please wish me luck 😁😁
This videos are very helpful to me that just started teaching Spanish. I would like to know how to keep third grade students motivated when they are not interested on learning other language than English.
Hi Jenny! Welcome to the family. I'm so glad you enjoyed it. This is the first in a series. I will be making more. I'm also working on more classroom setup videos. What grade do you teach?
The Language Lady Hi, I am in my third year of teacher training ( just one more year to go!!! ) So far I have taught middle schoolers and grade schoolers. I plan to be a grade school teacher - I just love kids so much! Thanks again for your videos!
@@TheLanguageLady I look forward to a lesson plan to help those who teach English to foreign students. Primary school to be specific/ Young learners. Did you upload it yet. May you kindly share the link? Thank you.
Hey, I was just referred to your video by my professor. :) And, this was a miracle...I'm searching your channel for the followup videos and not seeing them...could you pretty please with sugar on top post the links in this video description/comments? You are amazing at explaining all of this in understandable pieces. Blessings!
Glad it was helpful! Here is the link wida.wisc.edu/sites/default/files/resource/2012-ELD-Standards.pdf and I am so sorry I'm now just getting back to you. It has been a busy school year thus far. Thanks for watching my video.
Thank you soooo much for sharing this amazing video! I am going to begin my classes in collage and I'm sooo excited to learn more about teaching grammar and just planning ahead lessons for preschool and elementary students. NEW SUSCRIBER HERE!
Thank you so much for such valuable content delivered in such an engaging way! I have just finished a TEFL course and had no idea where to start! This video is a godsend!
It’s going pretty good! I must say I’m drowning in paper work, but that’s the name of the game at the beginning of the school year (I teach in Athens, Georgia- grades K-5).
Wow, very comprehensive, not sure I realized what teachers go through to plan and meet standards, I like how you use the same theme from the content teacher & collaborate to make the learning more solid. Thanks for an inside look Dr Hemphill. :)
Thank you Dawn. I'm excited to film the following videos in the series. I didn't want to overwhelm everyone with all the components in one video. I also wanted to take a deeper dive so teachers walk away really understanding it all. I hope it was helpful. ☺️🎉♥️ Do you continue to moderate Mike's livestreams.
@@TheLanguageLady yes bite size pieces are good. Yes I still go hang out with Mike and his crew. He had a back to school live today with a couple other ESL teachers it went well. Have you gone Live yet? I know you are so busy and helping so many people already. Appreciate you and your knowledge base. :)
I'm planning to start going live in a month after I've finished filming for a conference and a Hispanic heritage event. I'm also hoping things with work settle a bit and I'm on a routine by then.
@@TheLanguageLady it doesn’t have to be long, 1/2 hour. Remember Teachers Making the Basics Fun goes Live Sunday’s 8p for just a 1/2 hour. Short & Sweet! But you don’t want to over spread yourself.
Thank you so much! I have been having trouble trying to get my head wrapped around a good way that works for me to lesson plan. I have to be organized. :) Looking forward to hearing more from you! Future ESL Teacher
Hi Carrie! Welcome to the language lady family! What do you teach and in which state? I finally have time to breathe a little bit and I am actively editing a video that I filmed in november! Stay tuned!
@@TheLanguageLady I am currently in Grad school to become an ESL teacher. I will be teaching my first two students next week in my field experience. I am teaching online through Zoom.
Thank you so much for your clear examples on content vs language objectives, and even the standards! I'm a high school EL teacher in Ohio, working with co-teachers and my own EL workshop for intermediate ELs. Unfortunately my district doesn't provide curriculum or pacing guides for EL. We are pretty much expected to design the entire curriculum and make our own pacing guides so I must admit I am very lost, floating in an ocean of options when it comes to coming up with all of this on my own. I have a masters in TESOL but am still struggling. I keep thinking where to begin? All of my students are very different in terms of language ability and don't share the same language background. All I know is for now I'm going to keep watching your amazing videos! Bless you!
@@TheLanguageLady yes they do. Absolutely. The 9th grade and 10th grade ELA teams have everything mapped out. I also have a government collab with seniors, and the teacher has her plans too.
That's great. I follow their guide and provide language supports b that way. I'm also fortunate to have a separate intervention block where I teach the literacy skills my Ells need like phonics, vocabulary, etc...
hello my name is soad from Sudan I'm 20 years old and I'm going to start coaching in a English Club in a training center , actually it focuses more on the speaking and listening skill from watching movies and listening to songs and other fun stuff ✨💜 there's a lot of strategies and fun games that I took from your wonderful channel so thank you very much for showing us that 🙏🏽❤️❤️ some of them I already have thinked of and I was so happy finding out that it's already've been teaching on real students 😭♥️♥️♥️♥️♥️♥️thank you so much again and I want an advice from you what should I do to make my work perfect enough for adult people ?! and by the way if I messed up in Verb conjugation any words up there it will be an honor to get corrected by you💁🏼♀️♥️ cuz im still a student myself 💜
Hi Khonfusana! Thank you so much for watching my video and commenting. Thank you for the amazing work that you do for your students. As for working with adults, I recommend a lot of the same things you do for children. You will be amazed that adults love games too. Are you looking for an adult English curriculum?
@@TheLanguageLady hey 👋 💜 I'm so happy for your replying , and Yes I would love to have a curriculum 😃 cuz it's my first time actually and I don't know 🤷🏼♀️ where to start , I enjoy learning myself and I want really to make people feel the same way and I don't want them to keep learning with the same old boring style
@@TheLanguageLady thank you for sharing this!! I am volunteering to teach beginner adult ESL and I am having such a hard time finding ideas geared towards them. Your channel is awesome by the way! :)
Is there a tip you can give about course planning? I am a professor abroad and would like some tips about which way to go on about courses and what to cover. Thank you for your time!
Hello I am from EL Salvador..and I am trying to start adequating planning in my school, in your experience what should a LP should incluye en general, for an English Language learner, I see you talk about content though my teaching focuses only on the language adquisition...am i behind New trends?
Hello! It's great to connect with someone from El Salvador who is passionate about English language teaching. When planning lessons for English Language Learners (ELLs), it's crucial to focus on language acquisition. While content is important, language skills are at the core of effective communication. In your lesson plans, consider incorporating activities that emphasize the four key language skills: listening, speaking, reading, and writing. Tailor your lessons to provide ample opportunities for language practice and interaction. Also, integrate cultural elements to make the language learning experience more engaging. Stay current with new trends by exploring teaching methodologies that prioritize language acquisition. Strategies like communicative language teaching, task-based learning, and immersive language experiences can be beneficial for ELLs. Remember, every learner is unique, so adapt your lesson plans based on the specific needs and proficiency levels of your students. Feel free to explore technology tools and resources that support language acquisition as well. If you have any specific questions or need more guidance on adapting your lesson plans, I'm here to help! Best of luck with your teaching journey in promoting English language acquisition
Hi! Thank you for this video. I am entering my second year (first full year) as an ESL teacher. We do not have an ESL curriculum in my district. I discovered Stepping Stones by CI Liftoff halfway through the year. I want to map out a solid curriculum for this year. I pull my students out and occasionally push in. Many teachers expect that I will take their lessons and differentiate them or work one-one with the students on them. However, it has always been my understanding that I should be teaching my own content - English, and should be creating my own lessons. I can assist teachers with sheltering the instruction, but should my lessons be using their content? This is where I get confused.
Your lessons should use the language of the content. For example, if its a science lesson about global warming and let's say the students are going to read a text and respond and shwere with a partner, ask yourself what vocabulary, syntax, idioms, phrases, etc need to be taught for students to be able to speak and write in connection with the lesson. If you are teaching your own content, make sure that students are practice listening, speaking, reading, and writing. I shared my scenarios because I coteach. If you are on your own, its different.
I obtained my Tefl certificate , however, i have a lot of grammar mistakes and I have to use the a corrector al the time. What should I do to get better
Hi, I'm writing a 180-Hour Higher Certificate in TESOL and I'm referencing various videos within the course for trainees to watch to learn more. Is it OK for me to include a link in my course for TEFL Lemon trainees to learn more about lesson planning?
I’m an ESL resource teacher so my district has not developed a pacing guide for the ESL program. Can you recommend one that has already been created that can be accessed to follow? I teach K-5 in 2 schools and feel like I’m randomly teaching skills and not necessarily in the correct order. Thank you.
@@TheLanguageLady I’m using Imagine Learning and Imagine Math right now and they’re both really good. The students are enjoying them and making good progress. Thanks.
I want to teach via internet. How do I prevent cheating? The fourth week of every month I want to give an exam both with questions and answers as well as an essay. How do I prevent them from copying and pasting or having a friend do it for them or searching for the answers during the test?
Hi madam,My interview is coming in next week.I have to discuss on lesson plan in any topic.I have to discuss only not to teach. How I will do madam, I don't have any idea? Please help me madam.
My name is Bryan Davidson. I"m an underpaid (not a living wage), undervalued Dedicated Aid at Buck Lodge Middle School, in Prince George's County in Maryland. I work with 7th graders.
Hi Bryan! Thank you for commenting and watching my video. I completely understand how hard it is to be undervalued and underpaid. It's what I experienced when I first entered teaching. Are you teaching online?
Do you do all this for every lesson, every day? It seems like each lesson plan would take 3-4 hours to create, minimum. Every single lesson plan. So for a week of lessons, that would be 20 hours just writing lesson plans. Yikes.
