A short documentary for the ESPN Espy awards. This year the Arthur Ashe Award for Courage was presented to Nelson Mandela, and his work to unite his country through love of sport. Filmed by celebrated cinematographer Scott Duncan
There are people who blaze paths to further their own interest, and there are those who blaze paths to further humanity's interest. Those who uplift themselves get rewarded in life. Those who uplift everyone else get rewarded beyond their lifetime. Rest in peace, Nelson Mandela. The world world is grateful for your service to humanity.
I am a South African and because of the Nelson Mandela I can live in the outstanding country I live in to day thank you Madiba you truly served your country !
I witnessed history. I lived in the shadow of giants. Nelson Mandela I was and remain in awe. Inspiration personified. RIP a true light has left the world.
The 95 Bokke loved President Mandela, they still remember him with tears in there eyes. Madiba has made his mark on the world stage. He never had any difference in who his dealing with comes from a real leader. Its never too late to apply this Magic. Thank you Mr Mandela
May Madiba Nelson Mandela , his family, his country, and this wondrous world of ours that he has so blessed with his love, wisdom and compassion, be held in the arms of the Angels, and be blessed with 1,000 years of peace, kindness and prosperity! Rest in Peace, Madiba, and may we continue to feel and be influenced by your love!
Rest in Peace Nelson Mandela...you will forever be remembered for uniting people through love and peace in the face of violence and repression. God Bless
RIP Nelson, Nothing can extinguish the legacy you created and the 1994 World Cup is only a piece of the astounding life you led. Thank You. May the angels chant your name 1000x louder than that crowd that day.
A Miracle Man Who does what he can To embrace His Makers dream As out of touch as it may seem A Miracle man Who does what he can His life will always speak Even beyond his last heart beat
If only Mr Mandela was still alive, our country would have been in a much better position. He became too old and left us way before the people learnt enough about love and acceptance.
Your comment touched me,ignorance and manipulation is used to brainwash us South Africans n unfortunately some people don't associate themselves with any race outside theirs and again this is ignorance...South Africa can only get better if we work together with love n acceptance.
Such an amazing inspiration Nelson Mandela is. To come out from the hatred and oppression, years of incarceration to a place of forgiveness and then lead his country to unification. Incredible!
watch the transformation of each side - justice bekebeke........the team's visit to Robin island.....and the the game.... the finals....what a transformation, that courage.....standing infront of his people, wearing the springbok Jersey....this was genius!!! RIP Madiba
One Man vision to unite the nation of South Africa and it sad that all the work is been undone because man pride has got in the way of self interest over been humble and living side by side to work for the good of the nation.
A beautiful and inspiring moment in history. I was reminded of it recently when I attended the Ireland v South Africa international in the Aviva stadium in Dublin last November. A beautiful evening in which a now multi racial Springbok team were cheered on by an equally multi racial traveling support base. I certainly enjoyed interacting with many of them while Ireland won what was an exciting match they were quick to point out that "the world cup is in 2023".!! May the best team win. Mike in the West of Ireland.
Wow first time in life having tear on Utube this was greater than l thought. I m speechless ,may God bless His ,even after all they did to Him and our humanity His still did Good to them What is more one can give???

"I don't think I've ever seen so many grown men on a Rugby field cry..." *cuts to one of the opposing team (Robin Brooke) crying because they lost the World Cup*
One Team, one Country... 1995 - Africa do Sul. O maior ato social gerado por um esporte. Isto é Rugby, o esporte que une povos, o esporte que une o mundo.
I watched Invictus, but this is the real thing, this is amazing.....what a visionary. Seeing the White team cry, and the blacks support.one team, one country, one nation........this was visionary.....amazing!!!!
I was so upset that discrimination still plagues the minds and hearts of many people, but after this truly inspiring story, my faith in humanity is restored. A great leader is hopeful for change through adversity, has pride in his people, but is himself very humble. When I look into Mandela's eyes, I see good man with a great heart.
mandela what a man u are adorable wonderful just fel sorry that u become president at so late stage of your life. u my hero and hope you recover quickly. fron aco. south african
The chant of Nelson! Nelson! will live in my soul forever, what great man who came to us just at the right time! The present corrupt leaders of South Africa should be ashamed for not walking in Madiba's footsteps.
The day this happened ESPN (Sportscenter) actually did mention it all be it for about 5 seconds at the very tail end of the show. Of course I was probably one of the few actually looking to find out the score considering I was born in SA and come from a family of rugby players. :)
