As a self taught artist I found perspective was the hardest element until I read a book called “drawing on the right side of the brain” by Betty edwards. The biggest part of drawing is to remove the logical linguistic side of the brain. There are many tricks to achieving this and it’s all in that book. From that book I can now draw anything I see from anatomy to architecture.

Is it the new one?

@@ahamedjarjis7280 it’s an older book but well worth the effort to go through it carefully.

Yeah, that book is pretty good, for observation drawings. But I think we also need to learn how to draw without copying. So, for me, that book is just half of the way. Don't get me wrong, it is not a put-down, it is just because I went through it and I see we need to complete the learning by finding a way to draw from imagination, to "sculpt" a drawing based on the random fragments we see in our heads. That is the other half of the "way of drawing" Observation + Imagination Yin + Yang Good luck to every one of us.

@Uploading Truth I like the book "successful drawing" by Andrew Loomis and a Channel called moderndayjames. Also, check Kim Jung Gi content.

@@mizaelenciel I don’t know. Wether it’s something I’m seeing or from what I’m drawing from memory I can draw it. The big part to take away from it isn’t observational drawing rather to draw exactly what is pictured. For example our logical mind will say all legs on a chair are equal length. In art that is never true unless you are looking for distortion. The objects in front are larger than distanced objects. So the front legs will be larger. Rather than the labels and categorization of objects it’s better to think shape and angles. To draw exactly what you see.

I’m self taught in basically every hobby and interest I have, as I have many different interests. But the one think I lack being self taught is that touch of wow I’m everything. The part that would make someone say “ you are very talented at your craft” and it can be very disappointing. It is nice being able to do most projects, I just see the limits in my “talents,” that someone else would have from experience or mentorship. A healthy y mix of both would probably be best.

No such thing as talent. Talent is just IQ, and the higher someone's is, means they can learn anything fast, but because they have many more connections in their brain, they can connect and create with ease.

Since I've switched over to 3 x 5 sketchbooks, I've been drawing a lot of cityscapes/skylines. You can actually put a lot of details in such a small drawing.

"That's where most people give up as well, as soon as they start to figure out they're not good at something, they decide it's not for them, but if you really want to do something, then that in itself is what often keeps you coming back." i truly believe that as well

Thank you for taking the time to share your insights. I’m retired & right now, I just draw & paint for fun. It’s something I really enjoy (when I’m not pulling my hair in frustration 🤣). I love creating beauty & I just love the sensation I get from slathering paint around. I have a friend who travels the world, her art is in the finest museums & she makes money hand over fist. I think that’s awesome for her. But it IS a lot of work, outside of just creating the art. She’s much younger than I, so she has the energy for it. I love that for her. I’m just happy to have my solitude & being able to create beauty on my own terms.❤️😊

Thank you Bro. I recently had expressed interest in an artwork I did but the prospective customer decided not to as it was outside is price range. I was cool with that and understand that it's tough with living costs now a days. If I was younger I would have been guttered but as I've gotten older, I'm much more at ease with the idea of doing art for fun. I'm ok with having a 9 to 5 kind of job & still create art. Artists like you and a couple of others on YT encourage artists to be creative even if they don't make a living. I just thought I'd let you know that this is way more appreciated than you might realize. Cheers From New Zealand

It's all about time prioritization. Everyone has the same 24 hours in the day. Dan is an exemplary example of this. He is doing a full time job and still find 3 hours a day for his hobbies. Everyone always eats everyday and sleeps everyday and drinks everyday. No-one says oh I was too busy to eat any food or drink liquids or sleep today because its important enough to prioritize. If you really want something you will always find time in the day for it. Don't make excuses.

get a stop watch. and don't press yourself too much - because you will crash / burn out. very dangerous because you may stop for good. start with the minimal you are comfortable . even 15 mins a day is better than nothing. but aim to always build up. like running. my aim is to get to 3 hours a day. Ideally in the far future: even 5-6 hours. I am currently on 2 hours a day now. I write down how many minutes on a calendar and treat the whole thing like a sports training.. i cannot stress enough though that over-doing is very damaging. i crashed a few times, then couldn't do anything for a week, once even got sick. go slowly. build up eventually - like lifting weights in a gym. it's not laziness - it's understanding that over-exercising can equally cause "injuries" (mental or emotional). learning how to draw well is very energy consuming indeed.

Agree. Anyone motivated and disciplined who wants to pursue art can receive a primo, top-notch education via RU-vid and other online outlets. Find the artists who teach the way you learn. There cannot be any better caliber of teachers in any expensive university or art school than there are right here. Some of the talent here on RU-vid is breathtaking, and these Masters are generous with their time. Save your money and buy youself a studio.
