I don't totally agree on point 9 about copying drawings. Sometimes it helps to remember how other artists have solved the problem and give you many options at hand until you come up with your own solutions. It is also very useful to understand colours. On the other hand, you are very right : step by step drawings never teach you how to draw. It is also very dull for children who seek guidance. Best is to teach them to observe.

Studying the work of other artists, seeing how they approach various subjects and the techniques and materials they use, can be very helpful and inspiring. But actually copying their line work to reproduce their drawing will not develop in us the skills to draw our own drawings. 😀

Oh, you spoke so much of what was on my mind! Especially about learning from those "paint like me" type of tutorials. I stopped going to that kind of workshops because you only get thought how to copy the "master"s style" As you suggest, I find group classes, sketchwalks with my local Urban Sketchers group, to be particularly enriching. These 10 tips are spot on. Thank you so much!

That’s great to hear Berolina. It’s good to be inspired by the work of others, and to study their techniques, but actual copying of their work is a dead end for our own drawing. 😀

Great video! You are the first person I have heard suggest we should be making notes on our work where we need improvement etc. and really being honest with ourselves. This is something I have always done with my work. I also like the idea we stick with something, stick with the medium etc. - something I strive to do as I want to learn different subjects and mediums. As always, a very informative and enjoyable video.

I painted in oils for 10 years. Trees and flowers. No drawing, no buildings. But when I started I was amazed how many skills I’d developed transferred. 😀
