I was in my local Cabelas (Sorry Sportsman's Guide, it's a mile from my house) to buy some ammo when I walked by the rifle racks. They must have had a good buy on Savage rifles because there was four whole racks of the same rifle. The Savage XP bolt action with a Weaver 3 9x40mm scopes. And they were $350 each. I started thinking about the first video, avoiding "paralysis by analysis" and trying to find that sub MOA perfect sniper rifle...and not shooting at all. So I went ahead and bought it. Did the whole thing with moving the scope to my eyes and bought a case of cheap .270 Remington. And shot the shit out of it on my girlfirend's farm. By the time I finished 100 rounds I was hitting a dinner plate group at 200 yards. Not anything to brag about, but considering I hadn't shot a rifle since my M14 in 1986 USN days...I was none the less proud. With some training I am sure I can cut that group down to half that size. But the point is I am shooting, not planning/dreaming/saving up and finding one excuse after another.
@Donald Martin I tried 1000 and I can't hit it consistently. At that distance I have three, sometimes four wind variables. I may smack the plate (I got the Shootsteel 3/8" that are 12"x8") and the next round may miss by a foot. And the scope is really only good out to about 600 yards, then it gets hard to see. Now I can appreciate guys like Hathcock who hit human head size targets at that distance. And my shoot steel doesn't shoot back.
That’s awesome!! Some of my greatest shots have been with 4th hand $50 milsurps (that being the price 15-20 years ago) but you know what I’m saying. One of my favorite trap guns is a fixed choke 16gauge side by side from the sears catalog circa 1935ish. If people would swallow their pride and just try stuff like you did it would be good for the group as a whole when it comes to shooting sports in particular. Thanks for sharing man!
I noticed that too! Maybe in the beginning it was lackadaisical but after Ryan yelled at him and showed him he needs to do it with authority, he adjusted. 😅
Prior to Wednesday I had never shot past 100yds. Thanks to Ryan’s wealth of knowledge between his book and videos yesterday I made 6 shots on a 36” x 36” plate at 1120yds with my R700 308 using my hand loads, all done on 6x.
100 yards is extremely short. In BCT we had to shoot to 300 meters, and then in AIT for infantry training, we dealt with 500-800 meter shots. Intermediate distances with open sights. You get an optic to deploy with, the ACOG is 4x, but it's no sniper scope. It works great on a 249 and if you have a good shooter on a 249 or a 240B, you're gonna be OK. Every squad should have two machine guns at a minimum.
I have never liked so many videos for their intros regardless of their content as I have on this channel. Those opening skits are fantastic XD I had to pause and recollect my lost shit before I could continue XD
Ryan is legit. Watched his short videos for years. He had some of the best info on precision shooting back when youtube was new. I always wondered what happened to him.
These guys need their own show. As a old door kicker transitioning to bolt actions (recreation) these guys have given me incredible advise. Tons of new information and tons of reminders. You’re never too good to relearn basics. Thanks you Gents! Semper Fi
As a bloke just starting out in the distance shooting this video was bloody great. Cutting through the BS and being down to earth makes viewing it even better. Looking forward to seeing more of you work.
Having applied the principles in this and other videos and the book by Ryan Cleckner, I just returned from the range with bullseyes consistently at 100, 300, 600, 800, and 1000 yards using my Tikka .308. Thank you Ryan and John and Warrior Poet Society Team!
This series needs a follow-up of John showing Ryan how to do door kicking stuff. I would also love to see Ryan do a video explaining in detail the method at 13:50
FINALLY..I HOPE ALL LR SHOOTERS WATCH THIS VIDEO! THE MAN KNOWS WHAT HES DOING. one of the only REAL long range shooters on youtube. This man can teach anyone to long shoot. Great info, can't say it enough.
John L. and Ryan C are a great combination. I've finally been able to stretch out my range since this video/book (couldn't hit 300 yds consistant). I would add that having a Marine spotting for me helped alot.
Ryan thank you for making a great channel even better in the amount and quality of information provided. I have learned a ton from your long range shooting video. Your mastery of the material is demonstrated in being able to explain it in clear and understandable terms. John thanks for sharing the learning of a new skill. Slings should be on every rifle!
I’m just getting into long range shooting and a friend of mine sent me your video. Very informative, fun and straight to the point. Thank you for making very easy for a beginner to understand. I can’t wait to read the book
I'm just getting into long range so great timing on this series... Made a few recommended purchase's to go with a 6.5 creedmore Savage 110. Should be fun!
You two fellows are my favorite experts. Thank you for collaborating in your wise counsel and wit. Though I have made some missteps, you both have me on the path to consistent practice and preventing analysis paralysis with toys. Ryan Cleckner's book is superb. Your list and shopping links prep me for the next buy... a fine rangefinder.
Excellent video I was taught by my dad who was a Marine Scout Sniper he pounded in me that trigger control and breathing made the biggest difference in any shot at any range you can’t buy experience you must train Hope you all have a blessed day
Oh man it's like a breath of fresh air what Ryan is teaching. Be pragmatic! Reading forums and the bickering that goes on there is exhausting instead of shooting. Can't wait to go to the range and dial my setup there!
John: "Distance to target?" Ryan: "Target is still there." John: "Distance?!" Ryan: "John, just shoot. The target is 1 yard in front of you." I will need to roleplay this out with my fiancee the next time we shoot. LOL
As far as rear bag fillers......if you happen to reload, I've found that old tumbling media provides for a good lightweight filler. I just fill a sturdy plastic bag (I use a freezer bag), duct tape over the sealed opening and stick it in a section of old pants leg. Stitch it closed and add a loop of paracord (for transport/drag). Works like a charm.
I appreciate your honesty in these pod cast’s. I joined the Marine Corps in 1991. We were trained to snap in around 55 gallon barrels for hours using metal sights. Learning all the different shooting positions and working on trigger control and breathing. As for scopes and today’s advanced technology…. I assume our Special Forces in Recon had them. As I am just an Infantry Marine. I was trained to kill!!! Not play with gadgets. I myself put my trust in my Remington 700 308 caliber against your Creedmore rifles all day long…. So will most Vietnam 🇻🇳 Veterans. Semper Fi
Hey, Hey!! The Earth ain't no slouch! A 1,000+ mph equatorial spin isn't something scoff at. If someone turned off the gravity, we'd all go flying off into space, or something crazy like that!
Great series on LR shooting by one of the best. Thank you Warrior Poet Society for having Ryan on as a guest, and reading the section from the book. Too funny... Information is awesome and the Ranger banter … classic. Some hilarious 'one-liners'...FLMAO.
The background porn-esque music was top notch. Broke Back Sniper? Seriously...John...The info in your videos is excellent. I look forward to every one that comes out. Ryan...I just ordered the book today. Let's see what the Remington 270 can do...until I get my 6.5. Keep it up.
Ive been getting into long range for the past 2 yrs and this video by far has had some of the best pointers and overall advice ive seen in a long time . Thanks im definitely going to check out his book
I finally finished my set up after a few years, custom built simi auto on a sig 716 lower with all precision parts some built from scratch. My set up weighs a ton at 20 pounds chambered in 308. Last summer I finally made it out to 900 yards hitting milk jugs. Now with all the practice and range time I can hit them same jugs pushing 2000 yeards. Would love to go out further but space is now a issuse. Love all the videos I have learned things I never knew.
Ok, I visited your sponsor. The I told my wife we were going to skip a couple mortgage payments because I found a rifle I really want! By the way What did it mean when she started taping on her conceal carry???
I am shooting a 20 ft-lbr regulated pcp airgun, with a 3-12x 44 scope. I' ve got a 65 € laser range finder, a 50€ tachograph and the strelock calculator in my mobile phone. Rice bag, bipod and sling as he said. I sit with my buddies every weekend and shooting and spotting, our range is around 80 yards long, 350 shots cost me around 13€. Everything discussed here is so familiar to me, even though I don't shoot longer distances than 80 yards...So my point is that you can actually simulate long distance shooting with airguns. When long ranges are out of grasp, when ammo cost is an issue, or even local firearms legislation, one can learn long range shooting just with airguns. Shooting Consistency, trigger and breathing control, continuous affordable practice - well airgunning is also a good way to practice... Just a small piece of advice to all "powder burners" out there. Regards from Greece, and yes the intro was hilarious.
Ryan Cleckner. Retired former Unit member and SF 18D guy here. So, I’ve been watching you guys’ videos, which I greatly enjoy. Giving each other shit brings back some great memories and learned a few things along the way. Anyway! Just listened to Tucker Carlson on Fox SiriusXM today and the voice sounded familiar. Then I realized, it was Ryan. Great discussion regarding the people in St Louis, who defended their home. Also, well fitting suit jacket. Not too bad for a knuckle dragging Ranger. :). This guy is spot on with his knowledge , I see so many vids of " instructors" who get a lot of the facts wrong. Very informative and very easy to understand. If you want to succeed in long range shooting, follow his advice.
“Certainly, I haven’t used a gun anywhere other than on a movie set and I’d like to see if we could take them all away. It would be a beautiful thing.” -Mark Wahlburg
Easy. You ever see Hurricane Katrina aftermath. Police take off uniforms and engage citizens with Military weapons and tactics. You ever see Ruby Ridge? They shoot kids and wife. Then what??
Just getting into long range shooting myself. The most difficult thing is finding a place to shoot. Setup Bergara BPR ridgeback in 6.5 PRC. Athlon Argos 6-24x50 scope. The scope tracks well and is as clear as any vortex viper I've got. Looking forward to getting out to 1k yards with this rifle. Good hunting rifle too. I'm liking the 6.5PRC cartridge.
