John meets up with Ryan Cleckner, former Army Ranger sniper and instructor with the 1st Ranger Battalion of the US Army. He is currently an attorney, competitive shooter, and author of the Long Range Shooting Handbook as well as the cofounder of Veteran's Advocacy Group, a student organization dedicated to educating students about civilian-military relations, military careers and veterans' issues. Ryan also founded New Battlefront Foundation, a non-profit organization that aids veterans in their transition from military to civilian life. Needless to say, John was excited to meet him, especially after seeing him hit a target 1000 yards out, standing up… on his first shot… during an episode of Top Shot on History Channel.
In this video, John and Ryan discuss what prevents people from even starting long range sport shooting, plus where to start with equipment and setup. We encourage everyone to check out Ryan’s book to get the pragmatic approach to long range shooting.
BERGARA BUILD - Call Interstate Guns and ask for the setup they did for John Lovell. I would recommend upgrading to a better scope, as Ryan made fun of me for the one on the Bergara.
TIKKA T3x Tac A1: Call Interstate Guns and ask for the setup they did for John. If you are nice, they might even put it all together for you.

Ryan's videos with the National Shooting Sports Foundation are what taught me how to zero my first precision rifle (Rem 700, 6.5 CM, with a Vortex DB Tactical scope). Completely agree with the opening! I had always been a "buy once cry once" guy, but now I'm to the point in life where I've started screwing around with combinations a little bit. I really wanted to try out the 1000 yards under $1000 deal that people have been talking about. I put together a $250 rifle and a $750 scope. I was blown away by the results. I cant say that I regret my more expensive set ups, but you certainly do not need to spend thousands to have a 1000 yard shooter.

Read Ryan’s book which was extremely helpful and watched his videos which were great also. He keeps things simple and inexpensive. I’m a former Marine but had know formal long range training. Bought each item after research and knowledge gained from Ryan. My entire setup totaled $1,600. Mounted scope and bipod went to 100yd range got on paper, then second time out at 100yd I was able to place 40 rounds inside the the center ring. Third time out went out to 1000yd range and started at 375yd and spent the day learning my rifle and scope setup as I moved further out little by little, 400yd, 475, 550, 650, 800 then 1000yd. After 650yd I started using holdover only, no scope adjustments. After two misses at 1000yd I hit 4 times in a row! Man, what a feeling! I don’t by expensive ammo and don’t worry about the tiny details just like Ryan teaches. Thanks for all of your insight Ryan and John.

Cleckner reminds me of the difference between my brother-in-law and I. He keeps trying to put bullets through the same hole at 100 yards. He mocks me because I'm busy hitting center mass and moving out farther while doing the same. It's competive target shooting versus defense. I want to defend myself, as in the military, not feel smug about my 100 yard accuracy.
@codychildress7859
@codychildress7859 4 года назад
Alot of VLD style bullets will be less accurate at 100 yds vs. longer ranges. The bullets yaw will settle better after 300 yds if your rifles twist rate matches the bullet you intend to use. Don't worry about 100 yd accuracy so much
@ChuckBeefOG
@ChuckBeefOG 4 года назад
To me its intensely satisfying to punch three holes that all touch. In Canada, we cant use firearms for defence so about 0% of my shooting activities are about speed, skill or defence.
@ChuckBeefOG

D MD No i live in the country, a 160 block but i dont need a gun to defend myself in my home. I have a louisville and wide hallways and you have to get through my gate, past my camera and through Duke and Molly my Shepards before you ever get to my door. But if it came down to it i wouldnt let them shoot me if you catch my drift. Not too many armed robbers in Canada, just the odd meth head looking for pills.
@finngamesknudson1457
@finngamesknudson1457 3 года назад
Do you really expect self defense at over 100 yards? Most self defense happens within touching range. At those cases speed and retention are what counts. Haven’t done any long range shooting, my mosin groups around 60moa. However when I do it will be for fun and self challenge. That said I would be more pleased with acceptable at long range. Skill development: start where you can hit, then work your way out until it gets really hard. Work at that long range a bit. Then go back to short range. Shirt will now be easy, so you can work on speed, relaxation, and better accuracy. Repeat process - you will now be much better at long range without trying so hard. Rinse and repeat.

Btw I've experienced this.. I was sharing a 200 yard range with a guy shooting a precision rifle (had his book and logged every shot.. I was with my ar with eotech and magnifier. His groups were about half mine and he was frustrated he only had clovers and not just 1 hole every bullet went through. I had way more fun than he did that day and if there was a threat 500 yards away hed be dead with either setup. (My eotech has the 2 dots for a 200 yard zero and one for 500 yards) he was so focused on getting 1/8 in groups at 200 that hell probably never shoot at 1000 and see what his riffle can do there.

Most of the top shooters do not shoot 6.5cm (6.5mm projo) in tactical precision rifle matches. PRS / NRL series. mainly some 6mm style caliber. 6BR, 6xc, 6 Dasher etc... 6.5cm is definitely the place the start, as mentioned, Hornady, Prime, Cooper Creek, make fantastic match ammo and you can do a lot of hunting with 6.5cm as well. Excellent starter video for beginners, I also recommend people get online and look for LR clubs in their area. Our rifle club, NorCal Practical Precision Rifle Club has a custom built ( by Spartan Rifles ) loaner rifle in 6.5cm that a new person can come out and try on a practice day. They get a personal coach and shoot from 200-1000yds. We also do a introduction to long range shooting class. LR shooting is a big rabbit hole... especially when you get into reloading for maximum accuracy out of your setup. Vortex is an excellent American company with life time warranty in their products and has been a big supporter of our club and LR precision matches all over the country.

Good stuff! Buy once, cry once with the glass. Regardless though, you want something with a First Focal Plane (FFP) meaning the reticle changes size when you zoom it. If you buy a scope without this, your dial adjustments will only be accurate at the highest magnification. For FFP scopes under $500, check out Athlon or Primary Arms. Over that, look at Vortex. Of course, do your own research and decide what's best for you. Don't skimp on the mount or rings. You want steel over aluminum unless you're going for a lightweight build. As far as rifles go, I hear those Thompson Center Compass' are a good budget option under $300. For around $600 the Savage model 10FCP is also a solid choice to start with. If you can afford more, I like to recommend the Ruger Precision Rifle to start with. Whatever you decide, formal training is a great idea.

It depends on what you want to do with your system. If you want a tactical set up that allows you to engage targets at multiple distances beyond 300 yds/meters without adjusting your elevation turret, then you are right. FFP is certainly the way to go. On the other hand, if you are only engaging targets at known fixed distances, Second focal plain is probably a better option for you because you can get more scope for the same $$, and you don't have to worry about you cross hair being too thick at the highest magnification.

It's also great since Ryan doesn't have a RU-vid channel and so it's great to see him on more than just the NSSF stuff. He does have two podcasts, a law practice, a couple of books, Rocket FFL/CCW, AND Mayday safety so he is a little busy so great to see him on video.

The biggest problem I’ve found with long range shooting is finding a place to shoot. Only a small percentage of ranges go out beyond 300 yards and unless you live out in a plains State, good luck finding a 1000 yard clearing.

Beware the man that knows his rifle. As many of you probably already know, there's great info on LR shooting via the Sniper 101 series from TiborasaurusRex here on youtube. I agree with Ryan about not letting the technicalities get in your way and getting a quality optic upfront. Choose a cartridge (there's no perfect one!), rifle, optic and just get started. It'll all come together as you progress and learn. Get out and shoot! Have fun. Take your kids/grandkids!!!!!!! Talk about the importance of the RKBAs! Did I say, have FUN!

6.5 would be nice. It's just double the price of 308. Then again, I'm satisfied with 500-700yrds.
@nospam3409
@nospam3409 4 года назад
Depends on what you are shooting. If you are buying accurate, quality ammo, the 6.5 will be cheaper because it's cheaper to make. Same goes for reloading. To get bullets with comparable BC's, the 30 cals have to be a lot heavier. Heavier = more raw material (copper & lead) = more cost. If you're shooting the cheapest thing you can find, the .308 probably has the edge because not many options available for cheap creedmoor ammo yet.
@jmkhenka
@jmkhenka 4 года назад
Sweden has had 6.5 (6.5x55 swede) for almost 100 years. here its alot cheaper then 308.. 6.5 Creed is nice and modern, but we are not that impressed considering the 6.5x55 is more powerfull (in modern rifles, dont expect that in old mausers from 1915). Its the most widely adopted caliber in sweden and some other scandinavian countries. But 308 is overtaking it, as we need the heavier bullets to use lead free bullets and the pigs have started taking over - swedish laws make the 6.5 a bit risky for hog hunting. I know americans do it, but we have more regulated hunting practises.
@nospam3409
@nospam3409 4 года назад
@@jmkhenka actually, the 6.5x55 is over 120 years old, and in a modern action it will still hold its own at 1,000 yds against anything else out there, and it flat out walks all over the creedmoor. As far as monolithic projectiles, caliber for caliber I get more expansion, better penetration, and better overall performance from them than I do the traditional cup and core projectiles. You just have to match projectile design to the appropriate impact speed. Barnes makes good stuff, but they normally need higher impact speeds. The Swede should do great with them. Guys here in the US really like using them in the 6.5 Grendel, 6.8 SPC, and 300 blackout for pigs, but they use monolithic projectiles from Makers bullets, or Cavity Back.
