How to Adjust your Scope for Long Range Shots w/ Ryan Cleckner

John Lovell and Ryan Cleckner set up a DOPE card for John's Tikka rifle and Vertex scope setup. You've already seen them poke out to around 800 yards blowing up pumpkins and watermelons, but now you get the science behind the carnage. And it's not as difficult as you might think. Ryan walks John through the technical aspect of using a laser range finder to get "try DOPE" before dialing in the actual DOPE all the way out past 900 yards.

As a former enlisted active duty Marine, and a 5th award Rifle Expert, I don’t give out compliments on marksmanship very often, but Cleckner is the man. If you listen to this man your shooting abilities and knowledge will improve! Calling shots is very important. I used to write down what I thought I did before the shot and where the round hit.

I got lucky as a kid. My dad taught me and my brother how to shoot when I was six. My dad was the best shooter I’ve ever seen in person or in any video. He could do the trick shots and long range stuff. He drilled the fundamentals into us. I remember practicing balancing a Penny or a dime on the barrel and dry firing without dropping the penny. From reading the wind to calling the range he taught us about everything he knew.

I read your book Ryan! The "Long Range Shooting HANDBOOK" is a really good primer for someone who is just getting into long range shooting! Much of your comments in this video show up in the printed pages of your book. I first became aware of your tutelage on this subject by viewing old videos published by the National Shooting Sports Foundation. Your explanation about how to adjust the elevation turret when shooting at a target from an angle was superb. You took a subject that involved trigonometry and distilled it into a simple set of rules anyone can follow. If you ask me that is the true measure of how proficient someone is regarding a subject. Anyone can spout off trigonometric formulae but it takes a truly knowledgeable person to distill a relatively complex subject into something simple to understand. Well done!

Ryan is the most humble sufficient informative instructor on the subject out there !!! He keeps it simple yet precise , he speaks to the common man/lady , in ways we can comprehend , as if you were just sitting having a beer talking .... I got into rifles 2/3 years ago , always been a bow hunter , but with rifles, focused on 100-250 yds.just recently got into long range , and have watched many vids and most are waaaay too over the top ( A+2 to the square - B @ C +9 minus half etc.) , Ryan is right to the point , A+B+C=HIT !!! Even his older vids that look like theyre from the 80"s B rated porn era lol ...And John is perfect for the pairing , like me , good shooter but new to this so his questions are those of many of us ... Love this series , Ryan and John are a great pairing , hope to see more of it !!! AND THANK YOU BOTH FOR YOUR SERVICE !!! 🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸

I've seen a lot of Ryan's stuff online, he is my go-to for setup and for shooting "long distances" with my air rifle. "Long distances" for me is tight groups at about 100 meters. Even though I'm shooting an air rifle, his setup and tips still translate to me. I especially like Ryan's advice to keep things simple and without all of the gadgets to slow you down. I like all of the joking around and chemistry that these two have, it's very entertaining.

I became fascinated with long range shooting many years ago hunting Woodchucks and other varmints using a Bull barrel AR in West Michigan hay fields. In the beginning, I was only shooting at 150 to 200 yards. As time went by I got better and better and stretched my ranges out to 400 yards. Now I have a much better optic and a Delta 5 in 6.5 Creedmoor. I love long range shooting more than ever! I am a student of you both. I follow everything you teach! Thanks guys for this great video! I’ve watched a lot of Ryans tips over the years, especially on the NSSF page, he’s a great teacher, never over complicates it and gives real world scenarios you can try with ease at you local range. This colab is another level, the banter and dry humor makes it so entertaining to watch (who said learning stuff had to be boring right?) Just received Ryans book in the mail, so far it’s an awesome read, it’ll be like having Ryan right behind you as you learn the ropes of long range shooting. Can’t wait for the next vid in this series.

Great content. Thank you! My buddy and I do our own version of “long range” with .22 subsonic suppressed. It is what we can afford, but maybe we are learning the fundamentals of bullet drop, scope adjustment, and environmental factors. This short video just saved us a good 4 months of trial and error. I know this will not sound impressive, but we are hitting 6” steel at 200 yards with about 55 inches of drop. We were not recording our information in a dope book, but for sure we will from now on.

Armyof Shea I’ve thought about that before, bear in mind in real long distance shooting you have to adjust for Coriolus and spin drift, for RHS twist rifles in the northern hemisphere both throw the shot right. Although this only really matters 800m+ (around 850 yards).

.22LR is great for Fundamentals. I have .22LR for cheap challenges 50-300m, 6.5 Creedmoor + .308Bolt/Semi for 1000m, and Sako TRG-42 .338LM for the 1000m+ work. Everywhere you go isn't going to have 1000m+ Ranges, or even 500m, so it's good to have Calibers that you can Challenge yourself at various distances. I can't afford $10/Round either for Lapua Ammo. I need to setup a space and buy Reloading Equipment bad.

Just a observation since I have the same Tikka, and very similar body type as you Mr Lovell, raise the butt pad about 5/8's of a inch on the end of the stock. Reason, the stock is sitting a little low in your shoulder pocket an giving you some bounce when the rifle fires. The muzzle is coming up when the butt of the dun is going down, just not a straight back recoil so your loosing your sight pitcher. Thanks to both of you guy's for making these videos!

Great content on long range, but we are starting with good fundamentals... I'd love to see more on the fundamentals. Maybe I missed that on the WPS site

I know I am late to the party. But I have to thank you guys for these videos. I have been working my way through Ryan's book and being able to read sections and then see them in practice is awesome. The biggest struggle I am finding at the moment is a range that is longer than 200 yards here in south central PA. I am fairly consistent at 200 and want to reach out farther with a better understanding than just some Kentucky windage. Thanks to you guys and all you do.

Hey john, check your specs on the description of the gear. You mention you have an viper hst on that Tika but in the first video I think you guys said it was a pst gen 2, which is what you show on a later link. Vortex Viper PST GEN II 5-25X50 FFP EBR-7C - is that the actual one you have on there? Do you still recommend it? Btw, don’t stop making these videos. They are awesome, as is Ryan’s book.

Magic trick: If you add a folding rear lense cap, and orient it to open to the side and up just a little, it will block the vision down range of your non dominant eye. You can rest your eye/cheek and stop squinting. You wont have double vision. Just make sure the inside of the lense cap doesnt have and distracting markings or writing. Both eyes open, just like a red dot.

Wish I was there learning with you John, but I have a question: So when you’re calling out mils left or right are you adding to the original or giving mils from center target. I ask because, so get up off me. Great video. Something I’m very interested in.
