That chord is an extended A dominant 7 chord without the 5 (e) or 7th (G). Dominant chords are good for passing you to a fifth away which in this case would be the 1 chord D. So he played a suspended chord on the 5 (A) first (which was a 4 major over 5 sus4 chord) then he played that A dominant chord (you could add in the 7th (G) when you're playing it) then ended on the 1
