The history of music is filled with records that went pretty much unnoticed when they were originally released but were later rediscovered and regarded as groundbreaking albums that never got the credit they deserved.
This album called “Cauldron”, which was recorded in 1967 and released in 1968, is one of those records.
Fifty Foot Hose hailed from San Francisco but the group never achieved the recognition of other Bay Area bands such as Jefferson Airplane or the Grateful Dead.
However, the group's combination of psychedelia with avantgarde compositional ideas and electronic instruments was highly innovative and groundbreaking.
In this video, we're going to take a look at the history of the group and the history of this psychedelic and avantgarde gem called “Cauldron”.

I was introduced to this marvelous band in the 90s when I was working for a major bookseller/music store. Cauldron was reissued during that time and was taken aback how good it was. At the time I didn’t purchase the cd and never heard it again. Flash forward to 2024, I am reminded how fresh and innovative this album is. Thank you, YP, for the reintroduction!

I saw the reformed Fifty Foot Hose in San Francisco once. As you said, Cork was the only original member, but one member they added was this guy Walter Funk, who built his own unusual instruments, although they were non-electronic. He had one instrument that looked like a bundt cake pan with rebars attached to it & he would take out this violin bow & saw away at it like mad. It sounded crazy in the best possible way & it was amazing to watch, especially when you still had Cork Marcheschi going crazy on electronics.

Discovered this album a good twenty years ago. I thought I 'd heard every psychedelic obscure album and then this came along. I went like: "Wow, what is this?" Great stuff. The sonic experiments and the free form songs were probably too much for the hippies at the time who were - as stated in the video - more conservative than they appeared. Zappa uttered that same critique on the hippies as well. He also threw a lot of avant garde sonic experiments on his audience but he added tight and melodically beautiful compositions and acerbic humour to make it more accesible. Fifty Foot Hose is like an experimental laboratory. They go all out 'in the name of progress'. 🙂 Remember that in those days mainstream radio played Tom Jones, Dusty Springfield, The Walker Brothers, etc. You couldn't get more underground than this.

They had some listenable 'good' material , of course pastiche concrete musick. was very hip and depending on the place you were.. everywhere - .. no way to format or categorize was for the 60s for sure.. they fit in - not bad and not great - a product of their time I can't listen to the whole album and I find bad trip ... to be exact to the title it earned.. horrible trash but if you like sickening dischordance randome sound effect musick! :) I always respect unique artist output and this band certainly never lacked in that dept. Quite a divergent video topic for this channel but all good I assumed you were sticking with the UK scene. Excellent video and factual based presentation makes this a standout documentary of this short lived sound-musical group . Can you believe there was a Canadian issue of the LP ? it's a very nice package thick vinyl, nice print colors on jacket quality.

Surprised--almost alarmed--I don't know this band even by name, given I cared enough about psychedelic music for more than a half century now to actually make a pilgrimage to the corner of Haight and Ashbury 15 years ago to have my picture taken under the famous street signs announcing "Hippie!" to the world. That, and having owned Varese's signature work since right after reading his name in the liner notes of the Mothers of Invention's album Freak Out when I was maybe 11 (and, yes, it warped my tiny little mind irreparably, as should be obvious). I even have that United States of America LP gifted to me probably 45 years ago. So given all that, I'm altogether flummoxed by the fact the band is a complete unknown to me and am blown away by what I'm hearing. Another topic of research to add to the list. Sigh...and thanks.

What can I say, to the truthful it is not my cup of tea - I also years back found the White Noise album in a used shop and sold it on eBay for a nice profit, don't miss it at all. Oddly, in many instances there is a line sometimes betwixt Psyche and Noise and there is too much noise in Caludron for my tastes. Pink Floyd, Roky Ericsson and 13 Floor Elevators and others incorporated some noise in some of their recordings as well, but nothing like this. And no wonder those poor kids were alarmed, you should not emulate the sensations of an Earthquake at a club in San Francisco.

The first little bit of Music played reminded me of Dream On By Aerosmith. It would be strange if the DP Space Trucking riff was not at least inspired by this one.

They sound amazing. Infinitely better than those pedestrian bores the Grateful Dead who everyone in SF was listening to.

Agreed. Never understood the appeal of em. Much preferred Jefferson Airplane.

Pere Ubu often cited Fifty Foot Hose as an influence.

At least with "Red The Sign Post", I can add another song to my anti-war playlist! That sounded surprisingly progressive!

Yeah that little clip instantly reminded me of Kim Gordan. Another track sounded like they were influenced by Bruce Haack.

Yeah, I don't know if Sonic Youth were familiar with this record but "Red the Sign Post" sounds very much like some of the stuff they did about 20 years later.

Wow, for a 5,000 copy album at least 2 of us found it as a cut out. I'm in Delaware , where are you? Im curious how far a field it got. I got Soft Machine 1 & 2 , May Blitz and Sir Lord Baltimore all at the same time as Hose.

You've done yet again! My knowledge of psych is unparalleled (in my mind!). Then you humble me to my needed level with another wrinkle in time and space. I wonder how many viewers will see this and immediately look for Cauldron,as just did! As I write this my ears are grinning. Thank you YP.
