This is the full length interview with Ethan Phillips "Neelix" and Robert Picardo "The Doctor" from Star Trek Voyager. The pair were in Vulcan, Alberta over the weekend to take part in "Spock Days."
It's funny, Ethan wore such an extensive degree of make-up/prosthetics on Voyager, yet somehow he still looks like Neelix without any of it. I hadn't noticed before how much of his real nose, cheeks, and forehead were worked into the Neelix face.
The Doctor is one of my favorite Star Trek characters. Picardo is one of the best actors in the franchise... His acting is in the same caliber as Patrick Stewart.
YES! Have it set slightly further down in the Star Trek universe timeline. Call it, Star Trek - Doctors And Ambassadors, Chronicles of the Delta Quadrant
If that's a nicotine gum, its chewed well past is usefulness. Nicotine being the poison it is, would give you extremely nauseous in your stomach chewed like that. Rule of thumb is 2 chews then wait for the chemical to be absorbed. If you chewed a nic gum like he's chewing, your mouth would be on fire as well. I'd guess it's just regular old chewing gum. Enjoyed the interview with these 2 great actors though. I liked the captain best of all the characters through this series though. Strong powerful woman, and she's not hard on the eyes either.
Treetop64 I loved that episode on decisions where he had to choose who to save out of two crewmen with equal chances of survival. Loved his acting and the portrayal of the Doctor's turmoil.
I saw Jeri Ryan talking about how hard it was to work with Ethan Phillips because he was so funny on set and nobody could keep a straight face. Watching this interview I can totally see that.
Nelix and the Doctor honestly two of my most memorable characters for me. Ethan brought Jubalance to the show and some goofy fun and Robert had that I am very serious I am the doctor tone then evolved into more of a living entity over hte seasons . Roberts opera he sung on the show was a high point for me. Season 6 episode 13 virtuoso where the doctor sang for "Superior" being which had no idea what music was. Two of the greats.
That's because he is an actual hologram. He was the prototype quantum hologram complete with Strong AI, envisioned by the RAND and DARPA, made a reality through the combined efforts of primarily IBM, Intel and Raytheon. The DoD decided to test the EMH's ability to mimic human behavior by sending a copy to Hollywood to learn to act like a human and finally to actually act like a human. The program turned out to be such a success that a POTUS version was created, which ran for president and managed to charm the nation into electing him. Hence, all those questions about Obama's birth certificate and social security number. He was never "born" so of course he didn't have a birth certificate or SS number. Or I just completely made that up. Who knows.
Love these two! Met Ethan and Robert at a convention in Las Vegas and they were both very kind and funny! Also, took a picture with the entire Voyager crew. It was an incredible and unforgettable moment. Also, must know more about this play! When/Where can I see this? I'll buy tickets for myself, my sister and my mom. We are all fans! :)
Unlike some people, I always liked Neelix's character on Voyager. Although his jealous tendencies in the early seasons were a bit of an issue for me, I really loved his character because he was such a great person who always wanted to do the right thing and help people and he was always so accommodating. The Doctor was another favorite but I've always loved Robert Picardo ever since his part as the brother alien in *The Explorers* back in 1985. Great interview :)
One thing the two actors have in common is Character and Personality, of which they brought stacks to the screen. Both were an absolute pleasure to watch. I watched Discovery recently , sadly , for me , there wasnt one actor who could hold a candle to the previous actors in the first five series (and films)
We need a new ODE to VOYAGER MOVIE! I have an awesome script idea to bring back the entire crew, with a great mission! Huge built in fan base! I will go watch it!
they are all waiting for the heart, brain, kidney.. liver stimulating soup.. made from pure fresh honest greens, not even traded for.. anything never missed..
He says he remembers days of no internet. I was in Unniversity of Toronto in 1972 and we had internet, however it was called USENet back then. United States Educational Network. I connected all the universsities and major colleges.
I liked Neelix and the Talaxians. -- I once saw a teen in a pet store who had what I would swear was a Neelix hairstyle, but it wasn't science-fiction convention season. I didn't get to talk to him because he was busy with a bad customer and the boss, but I was so impressed! I enjoyed seeing both actors in other roles. It'd be fun seeing Ethan Phillips in a role on the Orville.
Ethan Phillips as 'Dave' in the film "Jeffrey" is one of the funniest moment in that film. Yes, you should search it out! He plays a sex addict for one of those AA-inspired scenes where you say "Hi, my name is..."
Can somebody help me understand I was very interested in the part where they talked about a new episode where the doctor went to help neelix was this supposed to be play I didn't understand it.
Of course there was no internet in the 70's... it was called BitNet or ARPANET until it changed it's name in the late 1980's, and it was the early 90's before private connections were allowed.
Funny guys, but the audio was so poor, and almost impossible to hear what they're saying, so I couldn't get through the video unfortunately. Also, I know it was medicinal, but the chewing was annoying, not helped by the camera being so close. Nevertheless, thanks for uploading.
I completely agree with the comment that these two should form a comedy duo. Picardo and Phillips. That's right up there with (Steve) Martin and (Martin) Short, or even Cheech and Chong. Very funny guys, Bob and Ethan. Love it!
I'm starting to dig this show on Netflix. Blown away by the talent of Picardo. To me, he is up there with the great actors like Tracy with a little Keaton. Hard for me to appreciate Ethan because I don't like his character. I can't stand people who talk about food all of the time.
+Thingsandstuff That was an alternate reality, so he never actually had a name at the end of the series except for "Doc". The Doctor has had at least 5 suggested names: Schweitzer (given by holocharacter Freya in Harry Kim's Bewoulf program), Schmullus (given by Denara Pel's holo-counterpart), Van Gogh (alternate reality), Kenneth (holo-family name), and Joe (alternate reality). The first two names were given by women he was romantically involved with, but he never kept the names because it was too painful for him, I guess.
Thingsandstuff True. It can be argued. The timeline was changed as soon as future Janeway went back in time. Her timeline no longer exists and therefor the new timeline is canon, and in that timeline his name isn't Joe yet. However, the other side of that argument is that the doctor is a hologram and therefor a computer and would likely choose that name again in the new timeline.
they even ham it up for this . ... god love this great post .ethan got a touch of ozzy look on him .roman hell is called vulcan .its a island .the roman gate to hell . a very warm place spock looked like the devil . just a guess that was the link in the story
