It's not just telling lies, it's also withholding truths. Rationalising silence where ethics requires us to speak the truth.

Yes but this is widely considered lying through omission which is still lying.

The way these concepts are explained has tremendously been helpful to me in navigating stress at work and having better communication skills in articulating what you used to be just things that bothered me ! Now I can actually name and address them.

That's right setting boundaries when it comes to behevior is so important . Parents who loves their children does not mean they will let them do everything they wants . There must be balance in everything we do . This is important . Fulfilling all the whims of our child , we hurt him .

So.good, it’s really a phenomenon „ethical fading“. Thank you for sharing and discussing this theme. „The punishment for telling the truth is greater, than the punishment for lying. If you’re telling the truth, it’ll hurt your promotability, but if you lie, you’ll probably be promoted.“ Encouraging employees and workers to lie, is a sign of low company integrity.

A great topic for discussion. I've always struggled with the morality of it. Growing up, I've been reprimanded time and time again for being too honest. I was actually told that in life, to get along and for people to like me, a bit of fibbing was necessary. Okay, I admit when I was a wee lass, with hardly any filter, my words were to some, a bit brutal. And through conformity, I'd learnt that having to be disingenuous was awful. It made me feel like a fake. Then, I went with the 'if you have nothing good to say, don't say anything' motto. It was better that lying. Where I'm at now is closer to what you've mentioned - I've come from being taught to lie (hated it) to the next plausible phase for me and that was to be cautious(fear-based) of what I say (stressful) and now I've decided to instead be mindful(aware) of what I say. The example you gave was perfect. You didn't lie to your friend. Instead you emphasised the positives, the good points in that given condition and told the truth eventually, when she was more open to honest feedback. It's easier to lie. We all know that. Honesty makes people feel uncomfortable because most of the time it triggers our insecurities, our wounds and traumas - bubbling up emotions we would rather kept buried. Until we can be honest with ourselves, admit and accept our flaws and be as comfortable as we can be with them coupled with feeling safe knowing that they will not be used against us, then we are truly on the path where honesty becomes the way of life. Thank you again for another engaging podcast.

Wow this was really great to listen to! 💘 We are imperfect beings in an imperfect world living in organizations that do not encourage truth yet we are individually responsible! We know when we lie and when we can admit, confess, repent and strive to be truthful and not justify our lies we can change. We must encourage truth not judge, condem and use it against people but rather create safe places for truth and justice to flourish. Beautiful Mr Sinek 💘 and Mr Wong. Inspire on truth and kindness. 🙏 💘💘

One of the systemic lie to me things in business are those so called "there are no right answers" tests that business give when you apply for a job. If there are no right answers, why are we even bothering with the test? Then there's the fact that the tests are designed to force you to lie to them. The multiple choice answers are always: Greatly disagree disagree agree greatly agree. The lack of an "neither agree nor disagree" or an option to state that you have not considered the question in the past, which can be the case, forces the test taker to lie. Leaving the question blank is not an option as these computerized tests will not go onto the next question if you do not give an answer to the current question. There is never a situation where everyone has faced and come across every situation and question of ethics. In addition, there are times when one may look at the question and not care one way or the other as the alleged ethical behavior or lack thereof, does not really exist and the correct answer is completely dependent upon each individual case regarding that question. In one situation, a person may agree, yet in another situation, the same person will disagree. Without that middle road answer that enables individuals to truthfully state that they have not considered that question in the past, every individual is forced to lie and while that doesn't seem to be a problem at face value, it is a problem when, after answering 200 questions, the same exact question comes up and you cannot remember how you answered it before, and the reason you cannot remember how you answered it before is because the test does not provide you the ability to submit your true view on that question. After coming across these tests a few times, I decided that I will not take those tests anymore for the following reason: 1) Despite my qualifications for the job, the application is deleted if you do not answer the questions properly. This proves that the statement: "there are no right or wrong answers" is a lie. 2) The test does not allow me to answer every question honestly, it forces me to lie. 3) In requiring me to take the test, the company is not only lying to me, the company is forcing me to lie. 1) Why would I want to work for a company that lies to me? 2) Why would I want to work for a company that forces me to lie? 3) Why would I want to work for a company that violates right to freely exercise my religion? 4) Why would I want to work for a company that forces me to incriminate myself by lying, thereby violating my protected, fifth amendment right against self incrimination?

The comment that Simon made about the Pharisees is one of the biggest truths and failings of humanity. Do as I say, even though I don't. Also, what was said about really young children not learning ethical fading until a certain age. Sadly, it all is part of the system and we remain like ostriches, with the heads in the sand.

but it doesn't give you the option of saying I didn't read it and I still want to be able to have whatever it is that I'm agreeing to it does not give you that option so how can you how can you be honest when they're not giving you the option of beingwhat time are online and you know like when you sign up for something they want to know all these security questions that you have an option to be able to have an option to be able to create who is your best friend in high schoolwhere's your first girlfriend's name and whoever it is it was an option but they don't give you that option when you got to say yes I read thisor they could say no I didn't read it but I'm willing to accept responsibility for not reading it and I still want my item or whatever
