Geez the Von Sway brought back memories. When you referenced GB’s wife getting into feng shui, I pretty much recalled that episode he talked about it. That felt like a childhood memory being brought back to life. Very nostalgic for me.

One way to deal with the octave issue is to use different instruments. From lowest to highest Base (wood), Guitar (wool), harp/piano (misc.), Flute(Clay), Bell(Gold)/Xylophone(Bone), Chime (packed ice). (The wiki says that chime is the same as bell and xylophone, but to me, it sounds higher). But because they all overlap by an octave you can mix them to smooth the transitions.

Perfect-pitch isn't very useful for being a musician. As for arranging within limited ranges, it's generally seen as acceptable to drop thinga down an octave. So don't feel too bad about it. Hoping to see you do more with note blocks in the future!

Holy! Etho. The nostalgia is real. I'm now going on 21 years old and was into minecraft craze from 13 and on and off too this day. And you've been their from the start too!. Crazy how time goes by but your still etho! I love it. Thank you. Your videos have made and continue too fulfill my days.

I think what they should do to noteblocks is add a GUI with two slots. One slot determines the note and one slot determines the tone. So instead of putting the tone block underneath the note block, you put it inside. You could use dyes to set the note.

I really think it takes a whole new level of thinking to create a puzzle than to solve a puzzle game, although you are "just" re-creating it, its amazing watching you problem solve and its a challenge i love to keep up with you, huge props Etho.

You can make the black peg detection more simple by only using the one pressure plate. All you have to do is always award the black peg and if the guess is wrong, remove the black peg

Hearing Cave Story music on that Minecraft piano is such a powerful mix of nostalgia.... Reminds me of a musician who passed away recently, George Buzinkai, whose most famous piece sampled Cave Story instruments, of your old old base with the awkward little Zelda cue when mob drops started to despawn, of coming home from middle school and watching those videos with huge fields of note blocks playing something mediocre that would fade in and out with zigzagging distance. I think it's important to remember, when we think about the past, that we can always do better. With that, with remembering and reminding ourselves, here's to a happy 2019 to Etho and anyone else who cares for it!

I love the von sway style of the prank you guys did on Guude.

I have perfect pitch, and it actually can be a disadvantage in a lot of cases. Yeah, you can sing every note spot on every time, but I sing in a choir, and since most people don't have perfect pitch, the choir can sometimes stray away from the given key at the beginning of the song. I usually just end up adopting the new key, because I would sound dissonant to the rest of the choir, and I just want to have fun singing. It's like having OCD but with music- everything has a pitch to it, whether it's a fan or an electrical hum, and it can sometimes be a distraction. I don't use it much, and most great singers don't have it. To sing good, you need some talent, but a lot of effort. Good things usually don't come easy in life.

For the black peg, just have a signal that will go to add a black peg and when the pressure plate is activated, one block will go down to stop one black peg to be put down, and basically the same for the white peg, but with a metal pressure plate to have a smaller pulse. Then you would use repeaters to strengthen the small pulses and prevent the pegs from dropping

Music is basically harmony, rythm and melody. Neither one is more important than others. The way I think about music theory is that we have 12 notes(at least in western music, eastern music has 18 i think) and we choose certain notes that compliment eachother or express different emotions. And we call them scales. You've probably heard of the major scale(happy) and the minor scale(sad). These have 7 notes and express their stories so well that almost all mainstream songs all around the world use them. For a beginner they are easy canvases to work on. But after you've got the idea, you can go crazy with the other scales such as phyrigan dominant(my favorite currently) or chromatic scales(all 12 notes). The thing I like about music theory is, you can memorize it all mathematically and have it work wonderfully. But you can also feel the scales and the note you should pick next! In Minecraft it is really a pain to work with noteblocks as you said because you have to tune them all by clicking, and for rythm you have to place repeaters one by one. About that octave problem you're having, you can add a bassline to have more control over your the melody. (I've been casually learning music theory for a year and i might have wrote something wrong, if you see any please correct me!)

As someone who has taught themselves not only to play the piano and guitar, but also how to sing. My New Years resolution last year was able to sing. By November, my Theater class thought I sounded amazing and lower classmen started calling me Frank Sinatra, mostly cause of what I liked to sing for people. This being said, art works like any other skill, you need to practice it. At the beginning of the year, I sucked at singing, it was really bad. But I got better. Why? Because I would sing every single day for at least 30 minutes.Think of anything else. Say I wanted to start skateboarding. Right now, I would be terrible, but if I practiced every day for about 30 minutes, by the end of the year I would have improved dramatically.I earnestly believe that anyone can learn to do anything with practice. You just have to want it.

I haven't finished watching this episode, so I am just at the part where you are trying to figure out the logic for calculating the black pegs. Instead of trying to 'add' black pegs. Why not start with your maximum amount of black pegs and remove them when the pressure plate is triggered? Maybe I am missing something in what your logic is supposed to do. But maybe it will be helpful?

Yeah, I have perfect pitch and honestly it's still pretty useless XD. It helps for learning by ear but skill in playing and chord knowledge is still far more important. PP is really just a little bit more than a party trick for me.
