ETQ Generator Will Not Start / Running Too Fast

Picked up this ETQ generator from Facebook Marketplace for $80. According to the listing, it hasn't run in years but ran well when last used. Should be an easy fix right? Once I got it running, I can see there is another more serious issue.

I never seem to get tired of watching you repair small engines, especially generators.

Jim, back in the early 70's, my dad made a small tractor with a 2-1/2 horse engine for the garden, and he always made a habit of putting it away with the engine still running and the fuel shut off. If he was living today, this practice would be even more important with the ethanol fuels that we have. I don't remember my dad having to rebuild carbs back then on small engines.

I had one Toro Whirlwind mower from the 1960s with a Tecumseh LAV-3030 engine on it (going from memory on the # there), and it had a spring-loaded bowl drain valve on it - you would just hold it open until all of the fuel was drained out. It also had both a low-speed and high-speed fuel mixture adjustment on it. I remember, even as a kid, I would reach down and crank the high-speed mixture screw on the bottom of the bowl nut in a half turn when it got to summer weather and it would run much better. Those days are gone. The fixed-jet carburetors that came about in the 1970s thanks EPA) were maddening as one could no longer tweak the mixture to get them to run well. Sorry, rant over, but some times the old days were really better!

@@jcondon1 Started practising this on my own equipment now too, up until a couple of years ago I'd always "got away" with overwintering my garden equipment with whatever fuel happened to be left in it (even though in the UK we've had E5 for years prior & just now gone to E10 :( ). Not sure what changed those couple of years ago, nothing officially but the fuel obviously got worse & it was mainly the fuel pump leaves on small 2-stroke carbs that suffered. Hope dry storage helps, seems to so far...

Excellent work James. Just one slight thing, at 34:26 you omitted the bolt that attaches the air cleaner box to the support that comes over from the engine and behind the air cleaner box. That leaves a hole, albeit a small hole, that allows unfiltered air to get into the carburettor

As soon as I saw the run time of this video I thought "This must be an easy fix this time". And it was! We've seen those governors tinkered with in the past, usually on lawn tractors etc, and the excuse is almost invariably "We just wanted a bit more speed out of it, so we adjusted that arm thing". Praise the Lord, they always end up going the wrong way, and get less speed, and less power, out of it. It does seem to happen that on rare occasions some aren't correctly set from factory, or even rarer, manage to work loose in service. It's got to be said, that little machine really is little! And what's more, it digs it's heels in when pushed, though I personally wouldn't push too hard with any of the "Honda Clones".

I'm always impressed at your knowledge of how these small engines work. Understanding how the governor controls the throttle and how to adjust it properly is a great lesson for me. I'd love to know if you're self taught or if you had any formal training on these. Years ago I had no clue what those tiny, thin springs were for. I'd screw them up out of ignorance and wonder my things didn't run right. Nowadays you can find answers and education on the internet... if you know how to ask the right questions. Finding you continues to be a great educational tool for me, thanks. If I every needed a generator and was close to you, you'd be my first go-to. Of course, me living in Ocala, Florida is just a bit too far... Question: do you read The Daily Stoic? Your patient and steady work shows a balanced mind. LOL, not that I'm one to judge!! Thanks for this video, Another great job!

On this style Honda / Honda clone, you just fill them up until you cant fill them with oil any longer. They are designed so that you cant overfill them. Any extra oil just leaks out. Genius.

Another well presented and well explained repair. I do enjoy the work you do I've learned a lot about engines and generators that I thought I understood, but understand so much better now. I wondered on this, if the governor control rod to the carb was in the wrong hole on the governor arm, if the rod and spring had been switched when the carb had been removed by a previous owner. The amount of needed adjustment seemed to be about the same as the difference between the rod and spring offset. Have you considered making a cart to hold your load bank (heaters, lamps), aux fuel supply, meters and tools out of an old generator frame to ease the move outside for testing. Thanks for the instruction and for sharing.

It is quite impossible to make any money fixing and selling gasoline generators here in the UK in order to make money. I have had a good look today on several sites selling them within a hundred miles or so. The price of working second hand ones is something like the price you pay for quite broken ones where you live. For me to fix one and needing to buy new or used parts then I am going to lose money 4 times out of 5. No one with an ounce of sense would think about it. Its a pity I used to repair generators when I was in the UK military.

James, I don't know if this was filmed before you started draining into clear bottles, or if you've stopped doing that. I would suggest draining into a clear bottle and let the water settle out before pouring it into your car. that way you can keep from pouring water into your car's tank. water has the benefit of "washing" the ethanol out of the gas. problem is you end up with between 83 and 85 octane.

I assume you're choking the engine to try to draw up as much fuel as you can from the bowl, but wanted to confirm. Also, do you flip it back and forth because full choking it would stall it? Thanks!

That is exactly it. When the carb is almost dry it runs lean and wants to stall so I need to choke it to get as much out as possible. When I flip it, I am just removing the choke to allow more air in for a second. Seems to help a little to get a few more drops out of the system.

Enjoyed watching this One with my Pizza. Whatever happened to the NGK-7000H generator from the dump ? Old Yeller ?

Old yeller was taken apart. Recently used a part to save another. The engine is still complete, waiting for its comeback.

Hey James how do you replace a choke lever on a Honda eu 2000 thank you

Interesting that it doesn’t have a 208 volt setup. Maybe both windings are tied together giving it more load capability.

This setup is ideal for an RV or job site. That way you get full power at 120 volts.

I got a running (but poorly) older Coleman powermate a couple years ago for $75. It made power too. I cleaned the carb made new gaskets, replaced fuel line, cleaned the fuel tank, and adjusted governor. Ran pretty good. Still had a little surge with no load but a lot of older genset did that

Looks like you didn't connect the bottom back part of the air box to the support bracket immediately behind it. Looks like a captive nut inside the air box so a bolt needs to enter from the back. Am I right?

Yes, forgot to do that.

Didn't you initially say that you thought that it wasn't the original carbie. Does that explain the governor setting being out. The home made gasket proves that somebody was in there fiddling.
@jcondon1

Technically you should reset the governor when you replace the carb. But have never needed to. Either someone was fiddling or maybe it moved a little out of place. Not sure.

This is an interesting one as far as over-delivering, similar to the little 1Kw rated brushless set I picked up for £15 at a local auction a few weeks ago (had never seen fuel IMO, fuel tap was broken off flush with the tank & no residual smell, oil like new). Anyway after replacing a defective cap in the power head it's working nicely and for S*!ts 'n' giggles I decided to see how far I could push this little 1.1KvA peak machine seeing as it was so cheap and not exactly perfect for my needs... It can push out 2.5Kw and hold engine speed/not pop the breaker, and after 10mins the stator winding was cool enough to hold my hand on... Strange one.

Unless you already did... you need to put the bottom mounting screw back in the rear air box body.
@jcondon1
@jcondon1 2 года назад
Not sure. Need to double check that.

How about doing a video going through what you do to get a generator like this ready to be resold?? Not just doing the repairs, what happens after you do the repairs and the video.
