Hi, John with etrailer. If you're looking for an easy way to get trailer wiring on your 2023 Toyota RAV4, check out this option from Curt. Let's take a closer look at this. Now this is the Curt T-Connector, Four-Pole Trailer Wiring Kit. It's, of course, four-pole, which is one of the most popular connectors for light-duty trailers or maybe even some of the cargo carriers that have lighting on the back. It's gonna have your basic functions.
You have a ground, you're gonna have your running lights, you're gonna have your left turn, and right turn, and stop. Now this is a great kit for someone that say doesn't tow all the time. Only reason I'm saying that is because it installs really easy, and it's out here when you need it to hook up to your trailer. And then when you don't need it, you can simply just store it in your compartment back here and it's good to go. So they call it the T-connector, because it connects up on either side of the car and it hooks into your factory harnesses.
There's no splicing, you're not cutting wires. Now this vehicle includes a power converter box, what does that mean Bottom line, it protects your vehicle's sensitive electronics from surges and shorts. So when it comes time to tow, you simply have to pull out your four-pole flat, and drape it over the edge of your weatherstripping. As far as installation on this, this is a very easy kit to install. It installs, like I said, right into the factory wiring in the connectors on the left side and the right side of the vehicle here.
Now you do have to remove the inside panels and this panel across the middle here. You also have to run maybe a power line from the front of the car, or if it's a hybrid, you have the battery back here. But other than that, it's not too hard. It seems a little daunting, but we can show you how to do it. We installed this on this vehicle.
Stick around, we'll show you how we did it. All right, let's begin the wiring install. First thing we're gonna do is lift up the hatch cover here, and we're just gonna set this off to the side. It's gonna give us some room to work. Inside the hatch, you'll notice a trim tab right here that needs to get popped out. I'm just gonna go ahead and use a flathead screwdriver and I put some tape on it just to keep from marking up the surface here. And what you're gonna do is insert it into the flat spot and just pop out on it, and that'll pull out. Now directly straight down from here, you're gonna see a tie-down hook on the backside, and that's a 10-millimeter bolt. We'll go ahead and remove that as well. (drill whirring) And go ahead and do that on the other side, on the passenger side as well. Now this next section is gonna be the center section here, and it's just held in place by pins inside of here. Now we have tools available. These are plastic trim-panel tools, and these will kind of help you out. Sometimes these come up pretty easy, and sometimes they don't. So you just wanna take it and just start wiggling while you're pulling up. So over here you'll have to apply some upward force at the edges here to pull that up. And it comes straight up, you can see the clips here that are holding it down. So go ahead and set this off to the side. Now we're back on the driver's side. Go ahead and grab the bottom of this and kind of lift and pull out. And just slide your fingers up. Again, this is helpful sometimes to have trim-panel tools to get back there. Now we don't have to pull this completely out, this is gonna give us enough room to access our taillight harness, and this is where we're gonna be plugging the Curt wiring harness into. One thing we noticed on our car, we do have the optional subwoofer here, and it was making it difficult for us to get back here to mount the box. So we're gonna do one more step here, and it's gonna remove this panel here. It's gonna be two Phillips-head screws. We have one in this location, and one over here in this location. And then, go ahead and kick your seats forward and kind of pull up and out. You'll see the connectors where it connects in and just push that forward. And it's really gonna give us a lot more room here to mount the converter box and to access our wiring. Now on the passenger side, it's going to be removed about the same if you don't have a hybrid. Now if you have a hybrid, you're gonna have a tray here that needs to pop out first and your battery will be down here. Ours is not a hybrid, so we're just gonna take this apart the same way we did the other side. I'm gonna lift at the bottom and kind of pull out at the same time. And t

why is the white the negative and the black the positive seems backwards to me
@etrailer

Although it can vary a bit, typically the white wire is used for ground and the black is used for the 12V power source. www.etrailer.com/Custom-Fit-Vehicle-Wiring/CURT/C56434.html

One mistake you made. You should have put that hot wire in a protective cover. That is what I would do. All the other vehicle wires have a protective shield covering them. Good job but ONE BIG MISTAKE YOU MADE!!!

Are you describing something like wire loom? That would be an good idea! www.etrailer.com/Custom-Fit-Vehicle-Wiring/CURT/C56434.html

Being in Canada I recommend you run the power wire inside the rav. As the wire will corrode in the winter Especially if they use salt on the roads

You can certainly install it that way if you wish. It does add time and complexity to the install. You could use some wire loom like # 7509-1 which is sold by the foot. This would allow for the easier install (running wire under the vehicle), but the wire would be well-protected. www.etrailer.com/Wiring/Spectro/7509-1.html

Very true.. People that live in the salt belt(Snow and Salt). It would be best to install inside the vehicle. As some will say.. there many ways to achieve it. Very good video. Just FYI.. 99.9% of the time..Red is always positive and black is negative.. Why would you change it?? Black positive and white negative....

Where can I mount the converter box and attached ground if there's no subwoofer?

On the Hybrid, the 12 volt battery is in the back of the vehicle so even easier to connect

Yes, that makes running the 12-V feed to the battery much easier! www.etrailer.com/Custom-Fit-Vehicle-Wiring/CURT/C56434.html

Why didn't you steal power off the 12v outlet in the back
@etrailer
@etrailer Год назад
For good reason. Curt's installation instructions specify that the power should be obtained directly from the positive battery terminal. This fully isolates the vehicle's electrical system from any short circuits that might happen in the trailer's wiring. Could you use the 12V power outlet? Sure. Do we recommend it? No, not so much... www.etrailer.com/Custom-Fit-Vehicle-Wiring/CURT/C56434.html

I would take the risk of blowing a 12v outlet fuse over running a bare wire underneath the car.

Good video, I bought and install the wiring harness kit. Everything needed was included and work, I followed the video instructions, it probably saved me from breaking some plastic tabs, components in the kit were all automotive grade, very satistis fied with kit and clear instruction video. Thanks

Excellent video. My Prime took a bit more effort, but having the battery in the back compartment sure simplified the process.

I would have ran the battery wire inside under the trim instead of underneath the vehicle.

You can certainly run the wire that way if you wish, but it adds complexity to the install and will also take longer. If you route the wire along another wiring harness underneath to the front of the vehicle, it'll work just fine. www.etrailer.com/Custom-Fit-Vehicle-Wiring/CURT/C56434.html
