The fact that this was his last performance ever makes this all even more touching. "Ah, di me non ti scordar..." Non mai, Ettore. You were the best of the best.

Listening to this registration always awakens sad memories, as it was his last appearence on the Opera stage.Even though his magnificent ,UNIQUE voice was already affected by this devestating illness ,youi still can understand, and " hear" ~ why he is considerated one of the Greatest Baritones of the past century. Thank you Sylvie, for honouring his memory.

THANK YOU SO VERY MUCH!!! DON CARLO is my EVER favorite opera and Ettore is my EVER& FOREVER favorite Baritone. Ettore owns my heart since the very first moment I heard his amazing,velvet, magnificent voice in my life. I`m from Bulgaria, we have many great opera singers, Basso is our '' trade mark'' but we have excellent Baritones too. No one, no where, never ever can compares with Ettore. Especially in Verdi`s masterpieces. And ESPECIALLY in DON CARLO! This role is written for Ettore... So sad he left this world so UNFAIR early. Oh, THANK YOU SO MUCH!!!...

Ettore ha deciso di affrontare un micidiale nemico contro il quale non aveva alcune possibilita' di vincere. Si è mostrato coraggioso fino alla fine come fu l Ettore Troiano quando affronto' Achille. Morendo giovane è entrato nell'immortalita' e sono sicuro che non sara' mai dimenticato. Ettore, per tutti noi, è più di un cantante, è un fratello che vivra' per sempre con noi. Grazie di cuore di condividere questo documento molto commovente.

I remember listening to this on the radio when it was broadcast, hoping and praying Bastianini would have a success. I was in the children’s chorus for that awful Tosca when he was booed. He was one of the truly great baritones and to see him suffer in front of an audience was so sad. But Ettore came through one last time and, if not perfect, was still his glorious, noble Rodrigo. We didn’t know at the time how sick he was. What courage! What a soul!

The tempi are too fast for my taste, seem a bit rushed. But gorgeous singing from Bastianini, seeing as it was his very last operatic performance... :( still brings tears to my eyes, I love that man so man. Never forgotten

In the original score, is Il Grande Inquisitore supposed to have a deeper voice than Filippo? Because here have Hines(king Filippo) that sounds deeper and stronger than Diaz (Inquisitore) itself. Or it is just a thing with conductors picking their singers?
