This virtual lecture by Dimitrios Skiadas, Professor of European Governance and Jean Monnet Chair at the Department of International and European Studies at the University of Macedonia and a former visiting researcher at the Center for the Study of Europe, took place on Thursday, December 7, 2023. In a deeply informative overview, Prof. Skiadas tells the European migration story by way of facts and figures, both current and historical. He describes the legal regimes surrounding migration in the European context and the potential for innovations in that realm before turning to a discussion of the political action - or inaction as the case may be - of the EU as regards migration as if the issue might be resolved by spending more and more money on it.
This event took place as part the Center for the Study of Europe’s ”Europe in the World” lecture series, an initiative of the Jean Monnet Chair in European Security and Defense, Kaija Schilde. The aim of the series, supported by the European Union**, is to prompt critical reflection by a larger public on human and regional security informed by cross-national experiences and a variety of disciplinary lenses as well as to introduce or emphasize EU perspectives into ongoing debates around security integration and global challenges.
